For me, that would create an artificial and unnatural result since I wouldn't use a 265 preset for a blu-ray.
I'm satisfied that this was an anomalous occurrence and consider the matter closed.
Thank you for your attention.

Re: Wierd compression question
Here are the results of my updated test results. So that rodeo doesn't get all saddle-burned on his high horse, I used the Apple presets (both the 2160p60 4K HEVC for the 4K version, and the 1080p60 Surround for the blu-ray version). The results were consistent with what I originally saw with my cus...

Re: Wierd compression question
I've decided in the interest of good sportsmanship, I will accept rodeo's challenge and run a new set of transcodes, using built-in presets for both 4K and blu-ray media.
I will advise what the results are when finished.

Re: Wierd compression question
There are two different media being transcoded. One is a 4K disc, the other is a blu-ray of the same title. Normally I wouldn't even bother with the blu-ray, but I thought I would need to copy the movie to a tablet while I'm waiting to have my car serviced. Turns out I didn't. I just think it's weir...

Re: mac OS Ventura testing
Nothing in general.
Just curious if any issues have arisen.
I have seen instances where some software have been cranky with beta os versions,
but smoothed out in golden release versions.

Description of problem or question: Has anyone used HandBrake with Apple's upcoming OS Ventura yet? I know it's still in beta form so no snarky comments necessary about that. Re: No Subtitles - what am I doing wrong?
I had a similar problem with Shang-Chi not giving me subtitles from the 4K version. I tried eliminating the Forced Subtitles and tried the English 1 only. I got what amounts to closed captioned. EVERYTHING was subtitled. I then tried the English (3) version along with the Forced Audio Search and all...

Re: Unable to find activity logs...
Try using this path instead:
Users/username/Library/Containers/HandBrake/Data/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/EncodeLogs
From what I'm seeing on my Mac with Monterey installed, the fr.Handbrake.HandBrake just leads down a rabbit hole of eventual aliases.
Hope this helps.

Re: No subtitles with Marvel's Shang-Chi
OK...final update. Forced Audio Search with English (3) worked perfectly. Why I needed it in the first place is beyond me, since the blu-ray didn't require it. Go figure. For what it's worth, English (0) by itself sort of worked, but it was basically high-tech closed captioning. EVERYBODY's dialogue...

Re: No subtitles with Marvel's Shang-Chi
Tried it with Forced Audio Search and English (0) no forced option. Tried it with just English (0) no forced option. Tried it with Forced Audio Search and English (3) no forced option. A cursory exam seems to indicate that the Force Audio Search w/English (3) no forced option seems to be working. Wi...

Re: No subtitles with Marvel's Shang-Chi
I may have already tried that option but I'll give it a go.
An interesting side note...I tried transcoding the blu-ray version and it DOES have the subtitles right where they belong.
With only the default Forced Audio Search.
Will let you know what happens.

Re: How to keep audio without having to select it everytime?
You might try tossing the preference file for HandBrake. It might be corrupt.
I might even suggest tossing Handbrake itself, and download a new version to get a fresh install.

Re: Larger transcoded files than expected
I'm normally not concerned about file size, but the radical reduction between a 16/fast (49GB) and a 22/ultrafast (4GB) makes me wonder what is coming out that I might miss. I might stick with 16/ultrafast for "current" product, and go 22/fast for older, grainy stuff.

Re: Larger transcoded files than expected
I did that (went from 16 to 22, with ultrafast speed) and the size went down ALOT. Maybe too much. Like from 49GB at 16/fast to about 4GB at 22/ultrafast. HandBrake Activity Log for Session: 2020-12-21T03:35:07Z Handbrake Version: 1.3.3 (2020061300) Air Force One_v22ultrafast.m4v Preset: 4K UHD (che...

Re: Larger transcoded files than expected
Riddle me this Batman: Why did changing the speed setting from fast to ultrafast result in a file about 1/3 the size? What did I loose in the process, if anything? A cursory examination doesn't reveal anything significant in terms of quality video or audio wise. Here is the base log at fast speed: H...

Re: Not so much 4K video compatible.
I'm running a comparison test between an RF 16 and an RF 22 to check for video quality and size differentials.
Am also testing fast vs ultrafast transcoding speeds as well. Wondering what the trade-offs are.
