Re: Vastly different output file sizes

Okay, that is what I was thinking. I watched the movie last night which also confirmed this. I guess you just get what you get when it comes to what the app wants to do haha. Thanks for your replies! Checkerknight, I get vastly differing sizes too. For example, Criterion DVDs & BDs produce much...

Hahaha... Former Professor of Computer Science, San Jose City College & Univ. of Louisville, and Director of Advanced Engineering at Atari (and my boss), 1982..1984, thinks I should patent SOFT BOB.

I've already disclosed it here.

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?

Sorry, I didn't follow though with the HARD BOB v. SOFT BOB approach. How about this? 57,822,709 David Letterman source (tff).mp4 <== AVC SOURCE 12,695,293 David Letterman bobbed via ffmpeg (frames, fix DAR).mp4 <== HEVC HARD BOB 7,454,967 David Letterman via ffmpeg (field-double by player).mp4 <== ...

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?

You know, since HEVC does field-to-field, intra-frame compression, hard bob followed by field-based HEVC should compress as well as soft bob, and it would avoid compatibility issues because it would produce 16:9 DAR and 1:1 SAR. Also, I think HandBrake will do it if it is fed a field-based source (a...

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?

I have done the following... HARD BOB is ordinary bob. SOFT BOB is my bob. I've never seen it done, not ever! It works fine. Timing diagrams (time points to the right) 'Aa' 'Bb' 'AA' 'aa' 'BB' & 'bb' are pictures 'A' 'a' 'B' & 'b' are halfpics [_] is a frame (_) is a field DAR is what the en...

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?

I found something related to interlace x265 but better. Readers will want to skip down to the TV TRICK, first. It's a sweet trick that makes the smallest stream. I couldn't make HB do the trick. Can you? The HDTV source (59 seconds): David Letterman source (tff).mp4 --> (AVC) 57,822,709 bytes ffprob...

Misses content that's in VIDEO_TS.VOB

Description of problem or question:

Re: 'THE WAY WE WERE [1973]', UPC 043396028500 [1999], decoded by AnyDVD.

The content includes 4 previews. HD doesn't 'see' them. They are in /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB. I expect that HB doesn't look there.

Re: HB changing BT601 to BT709

Aha! The HB folks appear to be using the calls to x265. Look: https://x265.readthedocs.io/en/master/cli.html#cmdoption-colorprim If x265 calls are used instead of ffmpeg arguments, then this: For 'PAL', set 'Video'->'Optimise Video'->'Advanced Options' to colorprim=bt470bg:colormatrix=bt470bg:transf...

HB changing BT601 to BT709

Description of problem or question: From what ffprobe tells me, HB is changing the DVD color space tag from BT601 (DVD) to BT709 (BD). As a result, the player (MPV) is using the wrong colors. Is the tag change made because I specified the x265 encoder? Is there any way to prevent it? If there's no ...

Re: interlace x265 -- possible?

Umm... I think I figured out the use of the word "interlaced". Tell me what you think, eh? Interlaced doesn't mean a video is interlaced on disc. It means it is submitted to an interlacing process during decode and therefore the decoded pictures are 'interlaced'. In other words, "int...

I repeated the encoding with the Linux version of HandBrake. It produced the same result. Can anyone confirm they get AAaaBBBBbbCCccccDDdd, too? Especially with current versions (which I can't do). The source is 'NTSC'-soft telecined. Here's the preset: { "PresetList": [ { "AlignAVSta...

Re: Going for 24/1.001 judders/second -- How?

I expected judder @ 24/1.001 judder/sec (which would be unnoticeable). But I got judder @ 12.5/1.001 judder/sec (which is noticeable). Note how what I expected (below) is uniform: The 2nd pair of frames are handled exactly as the 1st pair of frames. What I actually got is ...different. I'm bobbing 2...

Re: Going for 24/1.001 judders/second -- How?

My timing diagram is wrong. '60/1.001fps' is actually 120/1.001fps. I'm currently doing more transcoding and testing to determine what I'm actually getting. It is 2-3-3-2 (from visual inspection in MPV), but I don't know how/why it's happening.

Re: Going for 24/1.001 judders/second -- How?

Hi. Not that it matters, I have some additional interesting info on this video: For some series of frames, frames are frame-based (progressive), and for other series of frames, they are field-based (interlace). The field-based frames are sometimes 'top_field_first'=1, sometimes 'top_field_first'=0. ...
