This I have not seen before... every time I run HB (0.9.2, Vista SP1), I get the following error when starting up HB. I have tried rebooting and uninstalling/reinstalling HB, with no success. Has anyone seen this/understand it?

no; handbrake does not support file-to-file coversion. it is specifically designed for DVD-to-file conversion. the source is a folder (usually VIDEO_TS) or an IFO/VOB file, and the destination is the file name you want to create. are you ripping dvd to hd, not trying to process from HB directly?

the windows gui doesn't read dvds... my guess is that you are using an original dvd (encrypted source) which handbrake windows won't decrypt. you need some sort of program... some sort of dvd decrypter...

disable mpc's internal decoders. other than that, what wmp does mpc does, they will both use the directshow splitter, then your codecs will fight for priority there
