After a bit more scrutiny, I can tell the difference between 2500 and 1500 on my computer monitor. The higher bitrate is better overall, and somewhat noticeable when paying close attention to high-detail areas (like the bright red Scottish hair in Brave). Simply Selecting "Average Bitrate" and checking 2-Pass gave beautiful results, thank you! I couldn't tell the difference between 2500 and 1500kbps on my computer monitor (with a 1.8GB vs 1.1GB file size for a 2-hour movie). I'm testing a couple of runs at 1200 and 1000 to see if can tell. ...

That is exactly the type of advice I was looking for! I'll try again when I get home.

This morning I tried adding various filters to reduce noise, but the estimated time jumped to over 5 hours. I knew there had to be something related to quality and the change from the H.264 preset to MPEG.
