Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Great to hear the discussion on this is ongoing. CCs passed through to iPod Classic and up compatible CCs would be great: the final step as it were.

Re: Manually adjusting audio sync?

Yeah, it's a pain to have an otherwise flawless encode. Likewise for subs.

Re: Carry over timed-text track in MP4 re-encodes

Can QT Pro solve this for you? Open original file, Apple-J, copy sub track, open converted file, paste, save?

Re: [Updated: SUCCESS!] Non-Handbrake solution for Subs/Captions

The best subs OCR program is still on Windows AFAIK. Subrip. But previous to using it, unencrypted DVD content (split up into titles) is needed. So DVD Decrypter is needed as a prelude too.

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Even iPod Classics and up represents an area where soft subs were otherwise thought impossible. So pass through for CCs (DVD) to CCs (encoded file) would definitely add functionality!

Re: Chrome OS?

Purely speculating... but if the Chrome OS is a pretty layer on top of Linux, then the HB LinGUI should largely cover this surely.

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Hang on. Video (5G and up?) iPods you say? What happens if you play an m4v with CCs on a video iPod with CCs turned on? Does it (the iPod) shows them (the captions)? If so, then one can see how this option may be considered superior in some respects to soft subs since soft subs simply aren't support...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

New problem. I tested the final m4v with soft subs in QuickTime. Works perfectly. Ditto for iTunes and iPhone. But not in Front Row! Just a pure black screen with audio running in the background! The weird thing is, when the movie (Watership Down, Region 1, 720x400, soft subs) is selected in the Fro...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

OK it was all my fault. I now have three HB apps sitting on my system, 0.93, the experimental binary release and an svn build. I just happened to run the wrong binary. With the svn build, no problems with the caps. It's all perfect... it was just me being silly.

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Um. What on Earth is going on with the capitalisation consistency? The last encode I did had all caps, just like I wanted. I've just finished a four hour encode of a film to find that, without my setting anything differently, HB has started making corrections to the text track, it's not all caps! Is...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

I personally prefer the subs to appear *very slightly* later, but that probably isn't a reflection on the implementation. The syncing of subs to a/v therefore isn't a problem. Indeed I've gone back to the source DVD and checked where the subs appear there: HB has done a good job of following the sou...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

That (XCode version) was it. Compiled OK after that. Feedback on the latest svn: - Capitalisation and subs-from-CCs works flawlessly. Feature-perfect in this user's opinion. - Maybe too specific to be of use. But encoding an episode (30 mins) of The Good Life (Good Neighbors in the US) left a detect...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

I installed yasm as described in the link, so my yasm is definitely as it should be. It's been a few months since I installed the most recent version of XCode though, surely that can't be the problem?

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Great stuff. In my impatience, I thought I'd try to build the most recent svn. Right at the very end of the compile (Intel Mac), I get: === BUILDING NATIVE TARGET HandBrake WITH CONFIGURATION standard === With a ton of errors of the sort: [? various files] depends on itself. This target might includ...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Chaps, I've just tested out the experimental binary on an R1 DVD of The Good Life (known as Good Neighbors in the US). What can I say? Flawless encode, giving selectable subs on the iPhone. It all works and this HB user couldn't be more pleased. For what it's worth, you've made this nitpicking canta...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Sure, we're all just grateful for the CC option to be there at all :).

What will be the no-knobs default though? My 2p would be to leave the CCs all capitalised but maybe that's just me (and kevvo).

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

Sure, all caps are wrong too. From my own DVDs, I hadn't realised that CCs could be lower case too. Obviously I'm seeing all caps because the DVD people couldn't be bothered to use lower case in that case, rather than a limitation of the character set. And I take your point about the subjective natu...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

This may be a redundant question since you've doubtless covered it in internal discussion. But in case not... Asfar as I recall, all CCs are in capitals. So let us say we have CCs for the following speech: "Hello John. I need to travel to Europe." Straight off a DVD, this would be: "H...

Re: Suggestions For CC Handling

For end users, one of the main attractions of using CCs as the soft-sub source is that it is a text track as-God-intended (or rather, as the DVD creators / film studio intended). I.e., the user doesn't have to make any corrections, he/she can rely on what comes straight off the DVD, which is always ...
