Re: Can HandBrake defer it's video compression to a list of ffmpeg args?

I'm definitely coming to that conclusion. Actually - would you mind answering a kind of fundamental question regarding HandBrake vs ffmpeg. HandBrake can inherently deal a DVD structure (VIDEO_TS folder containing multiple VOBs). Can ffmpeg also do that?

Re: Can HandBrake defer it's video compression to a list of ffmpeg args?

The sync issues I'm talking about with MakeMKV are edge cases. Eons ago, when I couldn't take my dvd storage hassles any more, I decided to rip everything onto hard drives - something that took me months on a Mac using MacDVDRipper Pro, and I've continued doing this ever since as my collection grows...

Re: Can HandBrake defer it's video compression to a list of ffmpeg args?

Don's video encoding tool does not use HB - it uses ffmpeg. The link you reference is for an earlier tool of his that does use HB but he says it hasn't been touched in years and he recommends everybody use other-transcode. Don has no interest in supporting anything other than mkv input files and all...

Can HandBrake defer it's video compression to a list of ffmpeg args?

I've been trying to get great quality video compression at a slightly bigger than normal file size out of HandBrake, but have always ended up with unacceptable video artifacts like banding in dimly lit scenes, or shimmering effects on highly regular structures (e.g. skyscrapers with lots of windows)...

Re: How does HandBrake extract forced subtitles?

Thanks Rodeo. Hmm - I was hoping to be able to migrate my compressions directly over to ffmpeg, but now it appears I have to stick with HandBrake (or rather, HandBrakeCLI) for my many thousands of compressions. That leads me down another path, but that's best for another thread (which I'll start rig...

Re: How does HandBrake extract forced subtitles?

I located two movie files each dealing differently with forced subtitles. Both movies had half a dozen or more subtitle tracks. In one movie, the forced subtitles were embedded into the English language subtitle track (i.e. a mixture of forced and non-forced subtitles), and for the other movie the f...

Re: How does HandBrake extract forced subtitles?

Rodeo: Thanks for the tip - I looked further into it and was able to make some good progress. Woodstock: In pretty much all of my dvd collection (a couple thousand or so) the discs that present forced subtitles to view either have a dedicated English subtitle track just for the foreign bits like you...

How does HandBrake extract forced subtitles?

I have a both vob and mkv file of the same TV episode ripped from a dvd. Each file has only one subtitle track - the English subtitles for the episode. If I play either file in VLC and select that subtitle track then I ALWAYS see the English subtitles, even when English is being spoken. That's becau...

Can HandBrakeCLI do Foreign Audio Search for subtitles?

I'm trying to automate the compression of my ripped DVD collection. In the GUI I can check Foreign Audio Search in the subtitles tab and that performs a function I highly value. Is there a way to do the same thing in HandBrakeCLI? If so, can you detect (e.g. via a returned value) if such a subtitle ...

Re: Where are custom settings/presets on Mac (BSur)

Thought I'd also add that when navigating the Finder to locate the presets (for Big Sur anyway) you need to follow: /Users/yourusername/Library/Containers/HandBrake/Data/Library/Application Support/HandBrake/UserPresets.json The only reason I mention that is because in the Finder I don't actually se...

Re: Where are custom settings/presets on Mac (BSur)

Looked everywhere on my Mac for this and came to the forums with the same question. Thanks for posting the solution, but that sure is a cryptic, non-standard Mac place to store it. Ideally, it would be in ~/Library/Application Support or in ~/Library/Preferences

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

Just thought I'd also clarify something (that might be obvious to many) regarding my various compression test clips. If you view them on your computer screen you'll be hard pressed to see any video banding compression artifact differences. However, they are painfully obvious when magnified onto a bi...

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

It should look exactly like the original. But does that look good on your 75” TV? I did the VOB->MKV conversion and it looks just like the original VOB file, as expected. It looks fine on my 75" TV (given that it's a DVD) - my concern all along has been how the subsequent compression looks. I'...

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

I will certainly try that and get back to you (although that wouldn't really solve my full NAS box issue). Possibly a silly question - if it's just a remux (i.e. no transcoding), why wouldn't it look exactly the same?

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

There is nothing wrong with h265, if your hardware supports it go for it. But I've been told a couple times already in this thread that H.265 will either make things noticeably worse for 480p content or that it's just not worth pursuing because improvements only manifest themselves for >1k/4k media...

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

So I've already decided not to upscale - I'm going to leave that to the TV. This all started out with my 5x4GB NAS box (and it's duplicate hardware backup) having filled up with VOB rips that I've done over the past 25 years. Throughout that time I've repeatedly been buying bigger and bigger drives ...

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

I'm talking about while I'm at a friend's house or on vacation (i.e. far away from the server). In my experience there's often far too much hanging and stuttering at those file sizes. Obviously that's also a function of the local internet bandwidth (especially at a hotel).

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

That certainly crossed my mind, however I also wanted the capability to log into my NAS box and view the movies remotely. The data rate required is just too high for a typical 5-6GB movie.

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

If I'm interpreting your post right, that would imply the GUI *could* indeed write out a completely equivalent HandBrakeCLI command line. Now I'm back to being confused - I was told earlier in the forums that wasn't doable. Sorry if I'm flogging a dead horse.

Re: Good rule of thumb for compressing a DVD using H.265

HB GUI generally lags behind the CLI in terms of features and capabilities. Only because you cracked open the can of worms a little ;-). If HandBrakeCLI is generally more advanced, why not always be rigorous and arrange the GUI to call the CLI? I can't see it changing the encode time in any kind of...

Re: Ugly looking subtitles

Just bumping this thread in the hopes of getting an answer to my last question. I simply can't remember every movie that has forced subtitles. Is there a way in HandBrakeCLI to detect the existence of these so my script can separately deal with those movies?
