DVD Backup Recommendations Please

I am backing up my chest of DVDs. I have use MTR in the past but want to avoid it and stick entirely with HB if possible. For starters I am only backing up to hard drive. They will only be played off the hd via PLEX/XBMC/Boxee. No ipod, iphone, ianything. I am looking for both a fast rip and high qu...

I did notice that my testing turning off the b frame setting and doing a constant quality made for a larger file size. I am not too concerned with that. But I have not tested it yet to see if that fixed the delay I am experiencing.

I don't know enough about exactly what 2 Pass does to know if it would improve anything of not. Or why it is not compatible. That is why I asked.

But assuming all things equal and you have about the same file size at the end will using 2 pass opposed to constant quality produce any better quality?

2 Pass and Constant Quality

Why is 2 Pass not available when Constant Quality is selected?

Thanks.

One more question. After testing with VLC and Quicktime I see that the defaut display size between the two is different. A lot different. Have a look at this screenshot. I wonder if this has an impact that might cause my movie to play back with an ever so slight jerk. http://www.husar.us/blog/wp-con...

Hmm, I removed the two settings and now have the following advanced settings.

ref=6:bframes=3:subq=5:bime=1:no-fast-pskip=1:mixed-refs=1:me=umh:merange=24:direct=auto:trellis=1

Also, if I kept the settings the same and played in VLC would I have the same issue?

Thanks.

Video Lag and My Settings

I have a problem with a lag in my collection that is making me wonder if this is a hardward issue or simply from the settings I am using. I am using HB with the following setting to convert my DVD collection. VIDEO Output: AVI Codecs: AVC/H.264/AC-3 Audio FPS: Same as Source Average bitrate: 2000 2-...

I don't think you can compare quality to file type really. With all things being equal the quality should be about the same. But some formats might give you smaller files sizes at the same quality. But in your case you are going from what appears to be almost no compress at all to probably more for ...

I ended up getting my Dual G5 setup to do 5.1 with AVI. So that is my plan for my conversion. Convert everything to high qualityh AVI and still support 5.1. I just don't want to do a backup and lose the 5.1. I have no need for iPod conversion and just focusing on home theather.

sdm, thanks a ton for the details instructions and the link. This is exactly what I needed. My AVI was indeed encoded with 5.1 but not having all the setting right in the plist file and MIDI was why I was not getting it sent to my reciever. I am happy to say that I am now 5.1 and very happy. Let the...

I did what I thought was an AVI 5.1 and it only comes in as Pro Logic on my receiver. Can you share your settings with me to achive 5.1 on either an AVI or MKV?

I can post back screenshots of what I am doing over lunch if that helps.

Cheers.

Are you doing 5.1? I just tried the AVI and no luck unless I am missing something. I am going to try the MKV to see if I can get 5.1. But the Anamorphic is available in AVI. In the post I listed above it said.. "(The surround sound guide currently says that you can't get full surround out of Qu...

5.1 AVI Questions

Okay, the more I read on this forum the more frustrated I get about backing up my DVD to build a media center on my MacPro G5. Just when I think I have all my settings how I want them I read something else and find out I need to revaluate my back up strategy. I have done all my tests in mp4. Now I r...

Good point on the video_ts not cataloging in iTunes. But you can play them and assign dvd covers to video_ts rips in Front Row. I did it with DVD Assist. Seem to work just fine but you still can't drag them into iTunes. Here is a link to DVD Assist if you have not tried it yet: http://mysite.verizon...

Let the back up begin.. but one question remains.

Okay, I have been playing with Handbrake enough now that I am ready to start backing up my DVD collection. I think my HB setting are pretty solid for my needs. As I am reviewing Media Center software now to use and make my final decisions on that. But I have come down to one final questions. To use ...
