Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Yes, I have tried that.

Remuxing the files that came directly out of HandBrake with mkvmerge does not solve it.
The TV will still not play those files.

Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Any news? :)

I know I am being annoying but I love HandBrake just too much. :P

Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Hi, as I said, keyint makes no difference... There is only a minor keyint difference between the two, it has no impact on compatibility: 24 / 240 in HandBrake 23 / 250 in Hybrid ... and neither does the forced flag. The Handbrake encode does also not play when I add --uhd-bd, which reduces --keyint ...

Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

There is one unmentioned difference between the Hybrid and HandBrake encode: I do have to manually add UHD parameters in Hybrid, while Handbrake automatically uses the source values: --colorprim bt2020 --transfer smpte-st-2084 --colormatrix bt2020nc Shall I try adding those in HandBrake as well? I ...

Is SEI the extradata you are referring to? That is something someone at doom9 suggested as well... Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Hi Rodeo, maybe --hrd does not work without --master-display? I did add it in the extra options: "Options": "no-sao:hdr:hdr-opt:hrd" --tier-high is automatically triggered by --level-idc 5.1, the same goes for vbv. Either way - the TV accepts all of these parameters when they are...

Re: UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Of course! I had already deleted the initial encode, but I created a new one... I forgot to mention that I also need to disable level-idc=51, although the source video is 5.1 High (and plays perfectly on the TV's media player). Just disabling level-idc=51 does not do the trick, master-display needs ...

UHD HDR: no compatibility of HandBrake encode, muxing issue?

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible: UHD HDR encodes created with HandBrake will not play on TV's internal mediaplayer (USB). Identical encode created with Hybrid plays fine. HandBrake encode only plays on the TV's internal player when I leave out the master-display string: ma...

Maybe this helps someone else...

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible: x265 v2.4 was released almost two months ago, could you upload the according library for main10 encoding? http://x265.readthedocs.io/en/default/releasenotes.html Especially the changes to the lambda tables apparently bring a sign...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

To verify if my x265-10 setting saves space amongst different sources, I encoded 5 minutes of "Casino Royale". I chose the first 5 min of the Madagascar scene in the beginning. This is an extreme case of not only analog 35mm film material with loads of grain, it is also fast-action-packed,...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

I am all for quantifiable evidence to support claims - but I am also practical when I need to be. So, better perceived picture quality + smaller filesize still sounds like a simple win/win to me. I get that the difference between x264 8-Bit and x264 10-Bit might be perceived as subtle. Therefore I a...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

I'm basing part of my theory on the observation that the source image provided shows typical DSLR-like, digital-looking dithering—essentially a pseudorandom diffuse/crosshatch combination—while the 10-bit upsampled images show more uniform, pattern dithering. 10-bit x264 and x265 look similar, but ...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

Correct. What you are seeing is the upsampling algorithm in the higher bit-depth encoders permanently changing the dithering pattern evident in the gradation. Try encoding to 10-bit as you did before, but use RF 0 (x264's lossless mode), and then re-encode that as 8-bit at a normal RF like 17. I be...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

I have not actually looked at the other person's encodings - I was just wondering what he meant in the linked .pdf: x265 16 bit 8 bit output x265 16 bit 10 bit output This is how I got the idea that maybe encoding can be done at a higher bitrate, but be packed (down-converted) into an 8-Bit containe...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

My full response was the answer to your question. :) There is too much quantization error in 8-bit encoding and too few values to reproduce such gradations smoothly. Yes, thank you - I get that! :) But understand where I am coming from... The 10-Bit video is still just being displayed/output in 8-B...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

No. Is than an answer to my question? You may try one of the denoisers to smooth flat areas a bit. I have tried that. I want to be as close to the source as possible and those 10-Bit encodes are the best thing I have seen yet. Denoising always comes at a price in my experience... I actually prefer ...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

OK, true or untrue - whatever happens during the encode - the results still looks better to my eyes.
In both x264 10-Bit and x265 10-Bit + grain.

So is it possible to do what I asked?
Can this untrue 10-Bit encode be packed in an 8-Bit package?

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

So if you put 8 bit source in a ten bit box, you've added air, that's all. Well, if that were the case, why do I get smaller filesizes and smoother gradations? I made screenshots (tif) of a frame that is prone to banding, cut out the area in question and increased brightness + contrast to point out...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

Right, sorry. I should have mentioned that. Source is regular Blu-ray AVC stuff. So 1080p @ 8-Bit @ BT.709. I followed the instructions for the libraries. :) I started 10-Bit encoding on a nightly build, but the libraries seem to work in 1.0.7 as well (although it says otherwise)... Logs are coming ...
