Re: How best to deinterlace a source that has both progressive and interlaced content?

Just realised I misused 'frame' and should've said 'field', when I said 'means the second frame ... is being dropped'.

How best to deinterlace a source that has both progressive and interlaced content?

For a pure progressive source, I turn off the 'interlace detection' and 'interlace' filters for best speed and to avoid accidental de-interlace. For a pure interlaced source, after much research, I started setting 'interlace detection' to off, 'deinterlace' to yadif-bob, and setting framerate to con...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

To those that might find this thread looking for an answer to the same question, the answer is that you should indeed force doubling the frame rate to rather than leaving 'same as source' when using Yadif with Bob - which very possibly isn't actually what I needed! This contradicts some advice I fou...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

And there, you have it. As explained, you must be very careful to use the actual attributes, not DVD playback flags. Case in point: Almost all PAL "720x576 25i" compliant DVD movies are not interlaced, they are actually 24p film. Good luck. You’ve not answered the question, but I don’t ex...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

You missed my point entirely. But keep working at it; you'll get it. What point was I meant to take from, 'Your files are the same size, bit rate, and frame rate'? The implication I took was that you were saying the files were the same, but one played poorly and the other played ok in Plex. So, no,...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

I hadn't kept both outputs, so have re-done both just now. The only difference in settings is one used 'same as source' (SAS) for frame rate while the other used 'constant 50fps' (C50): Here's an ls -la of the output files, where you see the file sizes (just before the timestamps) are different: -rw...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

Your files are the same size, bit rate, and frame rate. Hmm. I'll assume you mean the output files, because obviously I used the same source file for both. For the outputs, I'm not clear where you're getting your info from the logs to say the bitrates and file sizes are the same. The file sizes def...

Re: Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

Apologies for the oversight. Here's where I used 'same as source' for frame rate: HandBrake Activity Log for Session: 2021-01-18T16:30:56Z Handbrake Version: 1.3.3 (2020061300) True Blood - s01e11 - To Love is to Bury [rf20].mkv Preset: My Preset 11 - Constant Quality (RF20) (Modified) [16:30:56] ma...

Deinterlacing: Yadif Bob and frame rate

Hi all, I use MakeMKV to create MKVs of my PAL DVDs (I'm in the UK) and Handbrake to make the files smaller for my Plex Media Server. For quite some time I've had deinterlacing turned off in my custom preset, but I recently went through this process with my True Blood collection, quickly noticed com...

Any reason to keep DTS audio for future proofing if mixing to AAC?

I've historically only ever bought DVDs and never had any issue with audio, but I've recently starting buying BluRays and have been having problems with the dialog being too low compared to the background noises (after using MakeMKV to, um, make an MKV, and Handbrake to make it smaller). I'm using a...

Re: Incorrect value used in automatic file naming for 'source'

I believe the OP is suggesting that the tag name is {source} but the value corresponds to {title}. We should probably fix that, actually. Exactly. Sorry, I guess I rambled a bit too much. You should use the string "{source}" (without the quotes, but WITH the curly braces). All of the macr...

Incorrect value used in automatic file naming for 'source'

Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible: Since upgrading to 1.0.7, I've noticed that automatic file naming no longer sets the output file name to the name of the input file, or 'source', as it used to prior to the upgrade. I thought maybe the default had changed, so manually set i...
