Re: NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
At least on windows, the encode utilisation is under a separate graph as well and it makes sense given it's discrete hardware. Yeah, I miss my little Task Manager GPU charts (but not enough to abandon ship on Linux). I'd wager any "GPU" utilisation is orchestration, memory bandwidth, PCI-...

Re: 'More Settings' Field Disappears When Using Hardware Encoders
Each Platform has it's own dedicated UI. The linux is a GTK ui and the code is on GitHub. It's probably not a particularly complex change. Might be a perfect opportunity for me to use my limited programming skills and dip my toes. :) I'd also like to contribute to the documentation in a similar man...

Re: 'More Settings' Field Disappears When Using Hardware Encoders
It's been raised a number of times in the last year or two. It's actually not a bug but just not implemented due to a lack of developer interest / time. Patches are defiantly welcome In the spirit of defiance , I'd love to help in any way I can. I'm surprised the Linux port would have a difference....

Re: Handbrake and AMD Ryzen 3900x
Still regarding the encoding of blu ray h264 in h265 which preset do you recommend to use? Official> Matroska> H265 MKV 1080p30 okay? My goal is to get a quality that is as close as possible to the original h264 but with half the space Strictly speaking of video encoding and the resulting video str...

Re: NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
It's still a bit confusing for end users because NVIDIA's API for NVENC does use CUDA (even though the encoding is still done on the dedicated hardware rather than the GPU itself). To add to this confusion, the NVIDIA X Server Settings panel (Linux) has a GPU Utilization (percentage) and a Video En...

Re: NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
Your choice of a 1650 is a good one, according to at least two engineers I know. My friends at the PLEX forums recommended this when I broached the subject of a low-cost, purpose-built encoding "appliance." I'm tickled that it doesn't matter which Turing GPU you buy as they all have the s...

Re: NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
NVDEC/ENC is on the main GPU ASIC, not a separate ASIC. The ASIC is integrated into the GPU, but it is discrete from the CUDA Cores. These seems supported by the available NVIDIA documentation. https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/image5-1024x600.png The NVENC documentation ...

Re: NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
I really appreciate the veteran user response; Thanks for taking the time. I don't think there's much to debate on whether software encoding will provide a better encode (a la "archival quality"). In my workflow, I'm working with commercial discs. If I wanted to truly "archive," ...

NVENC versus CUDA and Hardware Encoding Performance
Hey, Friends. I just came across another thread from a few months back where someone inquired on creating a database for performance benchmarks for different CUDA iterations of NVIDIA hardware. While the OP's premise was fallible, this was an interesting conversation for a couple of reasons. First, ...

Re: 'More Settings' Field Disappears When Using Hardware Encoders
The text field should be available nonetheless. Agreed; This is the first version that I've seen where the More Settings field disappear when selecting a Hardware Encoder. I don't know if this is something with the Linux port, the version (1.3.3 x86_64), or what. Seems like a bug rather than a feat...

'More Settings' Field Disappears When Using Hardware Encoders
I'm running Ubnuntu 20.04 with HandBrake v1.3.3. It seems that selecting the Nvidia NVENC H.264 and HVEC hardware encoders will make the More Settings field disappear. Is this a known issue? Another user reported the same issue with the use of the Intel QuickSync hardware encoders. The current docum...

Re: Intel Quick Sync Video advanced options on Linux
The settings you can apply to the hardware encoders are limited. While the settings options are limited, there is a list of available options for NVENC , but the field is not available to enter them. There is a note at the top of that document that says: Experimental Linux support is available in H...

Re: Intel Quick Sync Video advanced options on Linux
Not to bring this thread back from the dead, but I have a similar issue with regard to NVENC. It seems that selecting the NVENC H.264 and HVEC encoders will make the More Settings field disappear. I'm running Ubnuntu 20.04 with HandBrake v1.3.3. Is this a known issue? Incidentally, I'm running an In...

Re: Lossless Video Quality from Blu-Ray Source (H.264 Encoder)
Bradley, Those references are a fantastic deep-dive into the encoder settings. Thank you very much for posting those links! You're right; some of the x264 table data is dated, but it's nice to see it laid out. Perhaps that type of table is something we could maintain in the HandBrake documentation? ...

Re: Lossless Video Quality from Blu-Ray Source (H.264 Encoder)
We have an article called Adjusting Quality in the documentation that discusses sane lossy settings: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.0.0/workflow/adjust-quality.html Thanks, Bradley. That article provides some great preliminary guidance, and I appreciate you expanding upon that a bit further. I'm al...

Re: DTS-HD MA 8 Channel (7.1) Audio Passthrough - Possible?
If you think HandBrake must absolutely write the track bitrate to the output metadata, patches welcome :) ;) If my personal CPU (i.e. brain) cycles can assist, I'd love to participate. :) Just for clarification, can you discern why the lossless Dolby formats seem to be recognized (identified) compl...

Re: DTS-HD MA 8 Channel (7.1) Audio Passthrough - Possible?
Another test with a 6-channel DTS-HD MA audio stream reveals a similar effect after Handbrake encode. I ran Back to the Future ( log ) in the wee hours (testing some higher quality video settings), and I only selected the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack and selected Passthru. Thus, this is an issue with al...

Re: DTS-HD MA 8 Channel (7.1) Audio Passthrough - Possible?
Also, the DTS core substream is always a downmix of the full 7.1 track; the official DTS encoder knows better than to drop 2 channels to the floor… That's a great tidbit of information, and it's indicative of how DTS handles the core substream processing. That helps my workflow tremendously. Thank ...

Re: DTS-HD MA 8 Channel (7.1) Audio Passthrough - Possible?
Continuing my research, I found something that might indicate this issue is a potential bug. I analyzed the file output for Sleeping Beauty (per the log indicated in my previous message), and it looks like the 8-channel audio is hiding in there. MediaInfo Output for Handbrake Passthru of 8-channel D...

Re: Quality beyond Very Slow or Placebo in H.264?
Thanks everyone who contributed to this thread. It's been informative. A couple of questions: Does the Encoder Options - Preset slider override the encoder Quality settings? Specifically, will the Encoder Preset slider override the Constant Quality RF value slider? What is the de-facto (default) Enc...

Re: DTS-HD MA 8 Channel (7.1) Audio Passthrough - Possible?
To add some more information: Content with TrueHD 7.1 (8-channel) audio is recognized appropriately and offers a "TrueHD Passthru" setting (e.g. Batman v Superman DOJ) Content with DTS-HD MA 5.1 (6-channel) audio is recognized appropriately and offers a "DTS-HD Passthru" setting....
