I think I have just sorted this - upgraded to HandBrake 1.1.0.

Seems OK (so far!)

For no obvious reason when I access the PREVIEW window after opening a source file - Handbrake cashes. Can't explain it - it has been working fully for years and has just started doing this.

Thanks for that, mduell - but because I am on OS 10.6.8 I can't upgrade any further than Handbrake 0.10.5
