Re: Convert/burn HD .wtv file to 480p SD 16:9 DVD disc

Thanks for the additional replies. For anyone interested, here's how it played out (so far)... 1) First, I downloaded DVD Flick, just to see if by some chance it would read a .wtv file as input. As I suspected, it wouldn't. Then I remembered something... 2) I remembered that an old version of Window...

Re: Convert/burn HD .wtv file to 480p SD 16:9 DVD disc

Thanks for the reply. I fully realize that this is not what Handbrake is designed to do, but I figured that I'd probably need to convert my .wtv file (which may have some level of encryption on it) into another format that *can* easily be burned to a playable DVD and Handbrake should be able to hand...

Convert/burn HD .wtv file to 480p SD 16:9 DVD disc

Hi all, just got a request from my wife and need to get the answer figured out and implemented by tomorrow morning... There's a TV show airing now (I think just 30 mins) which I'm recording via Windows Media Center. The show is on an HD channel and will be recorded as a .wtv file. I know I can conve...

Re: Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

Yeah, I believe it has more to do with the amount of RAM than the CPU/GPU bump. One XBMC dev indicated a while back that the ATV2's limited RAM may not be enough to store a full 1080p frame (I'm paraphrasing here, and could be doing a bad job of it). In any case, I'm very happy that Apple improved t...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***

I probably won't have time to test this out for several days, but I wouldn't be surprised if High Profile 1080p will also *now* work with the ATV2 running the latest version of the OS. I already had success playing full-bitrate Blu-ray rips on the ATV2 via XBMC, but the stock OS/player stuttered. Si...

Re: Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

OK, so that didn't work. I still get non-smooth video playback under the stock ATV2. On my computer or via XBMC on the ATV2 it plays back fine (just as in previous tests). So any other ideas for replicating via Handbrake a similar recording quality as that used by the iPhone 4S 1080p video recording...

Re: Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

Just checking back into this thread. So based on those two links, does that mean that I should be able to take the ATV2 preset, change the picture width from 1280 to 1920, and then add the following advanced settings:

bframes=0:cabac=0:8x8dct=0:weightp=0:vbv-bufsize=62500:vbv-maxrate=50000

Re: Great software! - New versions?

FWIW, I think it would be a great idea for someone on the dev team to post an update on the home page every now and again which talks about some of the new features which are being developed for a future official build (and can be currently found in the nightly builds). It might also be useful to ha...

Re: Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

Just double the bitrate :P Well, that's sort of what I was thinking of trying (lowering the RF value). But how do I take the ATV2 preset and set it for Baseline@L4.1? For Blu-ray, you can reach a middle ground by encoding 1280x720 anamorphic (custom): storage width: 1280px storage height: 720px dis...

Re: Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

AdrianK in the Macrumors forums said this: If you're using the ATV2 preset in handbrake, the x264 profile will be High@L3.1. The iPhone 4S uses Baseline@L4.1 which is a lot less taxing to decode and encode, but it is a trade off between complexity and quality. Bit for bit, the iPhone video is lower ...

Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 with smooth playback on ATV2

A while back I made several attempts at getting my Blu-ray MKVs converted to a 1080p MP4 format that would play smoothly on the ATV2. No matter what I did, the files simply would not play smoothly. During this time I had jailbroken a couple of my ATV2's and could play these same files smoothly via X...

Re: Converting a WTV file while it is still recording?

OK, thanks. As a matter of fact, ffmpeg is one of the tools that MC-TVConverter is designed to plug into, so I'll play around with that when I get some spare time.

Converting a WTV file while it is still recording?

I'd like to begin the conversion process of a .wtv file (Windows Media Center 7 TV recording) to an MP4 file while the .wtv file is still "open" and being recorded to disk. I attempted an experiment where I loaded the .wtv file into Handbrake and started the conversion process, using a thr...

HDTV preset for Apple TV 2

I'm starting to experiment with a program called MC-TVConverter which will let me watch the 'Recorded TV' folder on a machine running Windows 7 Media Center. It will pick up the .wtv files and basically call Handbrake to convert them to MP4 files. Previously I had been using Handbrake for my Blu-ray...

Re: How to avoid this kind of blocks?

I believe that the original poster's issue is the same one I recently posted about here (using the early Iron Man cave scenes as a test): https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21951 As was mentioned in this thread, I was able to reduce/eliminate it by lowering the RF level. A level of 1...

Re: Previewing a file while its being encoded

Very timely question, as I was just experimenting with using MC-TVConverter to convert HDTV shows in WTV format to MP4 (the tool uses the Handbrake CLI, among other things). I was hoping that I could start watching the MP4 file before the transcoding had been completed, but that is not the case, as ...

Re: Give Handbrake more cores or more cycles per core?

Excellent! That looks to be exactly what I was looking for. I also saw an 'asm' option, but I couldn't seem to get that to work. But this 'threads' option looks to be working as desired on my currently running test. Thanks!

Re: Give Handbrake more cores or more cycles per core?

Found this old thread, and had a similar question, so I figured I'd post it here. I'd actually like a way to force Handbrake (or, if I understand things correctly, x264) to use *LESS* cores. I have an Intel i7-2600 and when encoding, task manager's 8 cores (?) are displaying close to 100% usage. Now...

Thanks. Do you have any thoughts on which settings, if any, would have the most effect on reducing this macroblocking? Or is decreasing the RF value pretty much it?

Re: ATV2: Reducing macroblocking in dark scenes?

Been busy with work, power outages, and other things, so I'm just checking back on this... It should be OK to use more refs than the default, but don't forget that the AppleTV 2 only officially supports levels up to 3.1. Have a look at H.264 Levels Will increasing refs directly correlate to an impro...

Re: ATV2: Reducing macroblocking in dark scenes?

Update: I went back and reviewed the veryslow settings and it looks like my problem was that the ref and bframes settings shouldn't be overridden for ATV2 compatibility. So I just tried another encode, this time using the ATV2 preset, RF 18 override, and the veryslow advanced settings (minus the ref...

ATV2: Reducing macroblocking in dark scenes?

I mentioned this in another thread, but thought it might warrant a thread dedicated to it. I recently experimented with some of the fast, faster, veryfast, etc. settings combined with the default ATV2 preset, and also experimented with changing the CQ RF level. My test Blu-ray was the first Iron Man...

DTS-HD passthru w/Apple TV 2?

I was looking at the notes for the recent daily builds and saw mention of adding DTS-HD support to MP4 files. Should that work with the Apple TV 2? And assuming that I also include a mixdown track, should those files still play without issue on an iPhone 4 or iPad? Obviously, I can test this out mys...
