Optimal Encode Settings Blu Ray -> Plex
Although I’m a purest and normally go for the highest quality media storage possible (storing about 300 movies via MakeMKV without any re-encoding or recompression). I’m consuming disk space at an alarming rate. I have nearly 1000 movies stored on my 4 Disk QX2 (RAID-5). On some movies that are less...

Handbrake Bug? Recalled Preset Changes 853X720 to 720X400...
I was encoding Dexter DVDs.... after doing everything manually (choosing the AppleTV preset to start then choosing: deinterlace, 256k audio) I created a preset for that selection. Now that I've ripped, encoded, and added metadata to all 4 seasons I've noticed that 2 seasons or 8 discs were encoded w...

Trouble with .MTS files--No Valid Source Found
Okay, I have some .MTS files from my new Sony camera (DSC-HX5V). I copied the entire folder structure to my hard drive each time I dumped data... the path that seems to show the actual media is: Private/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/ where we have files named like: 00009.MTS When I try to open these files or hi...

Re: Gamma or Lost Detail Issue with 0.9.3 (AppleTV)
So, what's the solution?
BTW: I did not have this problem with the legacy pre-set... only the new pre-set from 0.9.3.
I'm ready to do a lot of encoding and need a solution ASAP.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
R

So, what do I need to type in the advanced area?jbrjake wrote:Oh, I misinterpreted "legacy encode" to be one done with an older version of HB, not with the ATV Legacy preset.
Rhester's got it. Probably psy-rd or vaq. No widgets for them yet, do it the text box on the advanced tab.
Thanks,

More likely fall-out from setting the color matrix. Doesn't matter if we set it to Bt.601, Bt.709, or leave it blank...seems like *someone's* always griping. Do I have access to those settings? How? BTW: the loss of detail (or increased contrast or gamma issue or darkness increase) is obviously dif...

How do I turn these things off? I was looking at the advanced tab for the new AppleTV preset but it seems that I have not found where to make those changes.rhester wrote:Try turning off the Psy-RD and/or VAQ options and see if it helps.

Gamma or Lost Detail Issue with 0.9.3 (AppleTV)
I'm running various tests with the standard AppleTV setting (new pre-set) and a few variations as suggested in the forum..... and I've noticed that there seems to be a gamma issue... that is, many of the scenes are missing detail in the shadows.... I noticed that the legacy encode does not have this...

robertbroussard To implement Cavalicious' code in the MacGUI you could follow my instructions in my first post, about five entries up. Note if your source in NTSC you may like to select the appropriate frame rate for the source.
Yes, I saw that. What are we to do with the code that precede...

Any consensus yet???
With all of this discussion and testing there should be a consensus on the best settings (better video quality and/or smaller file sizes compared to the default AppleTV preset)... Well, what settings are consistently better than the standard preset? I need to rip a bunch of content and I don't want ...

Is this recipe still valid--see the link above.
This thing talks about a trick using Quicktime Pro.
Thoughts?
Can you reliably judge the encode quality on your computer and no via AppleTV?
Thanks,
Robert

Your best quality is to use anamorphic. Only mkv and mp4 containers support anamorphic; avi does not. An un-hacked Apple TV only supports mp4 containers; once hacked with Perian, it will support all three.
Thanks for the FABULOUS explanation--I needed that! So, beyond the standard AppleTV ...

Encoding for AppleTV--What's the best settings???
I have ripped some personal DVDs via MTR and then ran them through HB with the default "AppleTV" settings and sometimes I did 2-pass encoding. Anyway, I would like to do a lot more ripping and I don;t want to have to do it again. Later this year I will by an AppleTV--now I'm just preparing...

ANswer this one question...
Picture Setting. Why does it show that the Output (720 X 360) is smaller than the Source (720 X480)? Also, why does it show that the Anamorphic as 853 X 360? What does this mean? Am I losing quality by using these settings? What is recommended???
