Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Did the encodes come out at the same bitrate with the same tune and the different ratecontrol methods? If not you're not comparing apples to apples. I have yet to complete a re-encode from source with constant quality, I keep on starting over. One time was because the Windows 10 computer restarted ...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Actually, nhyone, despite the fact that my improper syntax failed to enable the extra options I was trying to use, I'm quite happy with the results. It's okay to use whatever settings you like. It is always amazing when you start, it is only later that you realize the flaws. That's why I suggest to...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Any idea what range of RF settings I should try in both x264 and x265 to try'n end up with that bitrate? I know it is dependent on the source, but... average action movie, say? You could always create 30-second previews of carefully-chosen representative scenes to see the correlation between bitrat...

I don't know how appropriate or inappropriate it is since I am not familiar with the source/vetting of these DLLs, but does this help you?

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Just chose a RF that will give you a similar bitrate in your test video then use that. You may even save more space as you may need a lower bitrate than what you are selecting. It's been my experience that the RF degrades quality unacceptably before the filesize becomes acceptably small. Maybe the ...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Why constrain your video bitrate if you don't have to? Because my first priority is getting file size reduced. I have become frustrated with trying to find the optimal balance with the RF slider. I don't have a good test video (I wasn't able to download any of the Big Buck Bunny videos someone link...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

Dysthymia, with your suggested settings, I would keep the source! :D (Because you will re-encode again in the future.) Actually, nhyone, despite the fact that my improper syntax failed to enable the extra options I was trying to use, I'm quite happy with the results. As one user in the above linked...

And these extra settings are being hidden and not in the presets because... I see how that can complement your stance on this topic, but I like to think it's because hiding them makes for the most user friendly interface. We don't want users to feel confused and overwhelmed. Many of the individual ...

Re: Quality beyond Very Slow or Placebo in H.264?

There seems to be some confusion here about the fundamentals. The primary control for quality is your ratecontrol setting, whether it be a bitrate or an RF value. The x264 preset/tunes/encoder options are primarily a control for quality per bit, not total quality. I accept that the Constant Quality...

I can't really argue with that. I probably couldn't pick a Placebo encoded video over Very Slow in a blind test, but I'm still interested in maximizing that quality to file size ratio.

Re: Quality beyond Very Slow or Placebo in H.264?

You cannot add quality to a source, just avoid removing much. Placebo is "make the output file bigger than the source". I apologize, I was referring to the Encoder Preset slider under Optimise Video, rather than the Constant Quality slider. I know that setting an RF number of 0 makes no s...

Test video file?

Is there a high quality, non-copyrighted video file anyone would recommend using for evaluating different Handbrake settings?

A few seconds of UHQ grainy video, a few seconds with smoke or steam passing in front of someone's face, several seconds of fast action, etc?

Re: What's your video format preference?

I use Plex as well, and my preference has been shifting from x264 to x265 just for the increased quality to filesize ratio it can offer, to keep the size of my collection down. Even though it has to be transcoded to play in Plex.

Re: Anyway to figure out which version x265 Handbrake is using?

If you navigate to your Handbrake installation folder, you should be able to right-click on the .dll file in question, click Properties, then the Details tab. The version number will be listed there. Here is the link provided via these forums: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3416...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

You're right, rollin_eng. I think x264 is the only option to get through that amount of video in a reasonable amount of time. I was overly excited about the H.265 settings post I'd found.

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

I don't think your extra options are working. I'll bet if you check your encode logs, you'll find an error in the second pass. I think you'll need to convert them to Handbrake format: rc-lookahead=120:bframes=12:ref=6:subme=7 I removed two of the options: -p9 sets the Placebo preset, which can be d...

Re: Help with Optimal H.265 1080p settings

I came across someone who had done some testing to find optimal H.265 settings, and they ended up with a 1.5 Mbit 1080p result that was stunning to me compared to the RF/Very Slow settings I'd been tweaking. https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1807501#post1807501 Here is the video result: http:...

DLL downloads for nightly builds?

I had come across a few months ago the 10-bit x264, 10-bit x265, and 12-bit x265 dlls for use with the nightly Handbrake build[s], but I can't find those download links anymore. Does anyone have a lead on this?
