Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

Let me clarify: it's definitely NOT a HB issue. 100%.

Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

It's okay, I think this thread can be closed. I was just hoping someone would have some tips, but I don't think this is a problem with HB or anything like that.

Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

Used VLC to capture screenshots. The comparison is from a rip of an old DVD by Tartan UK but I think it was actually NTSC--if memory serves, they claimed they "had to" release it as NTSC because it was progressive scan. Anyway, the physical DVD is stored away somewhere, so the screenshot w...

Any links to best practices on this topic? Or any high quality means of brightening things up?

Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

Should I encode with the special colorspace or just normal?

And if anyone has links to any references or best practices on this topic of HDR-to-SDR it would be much appreciated.

Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

The screenshots I posted are from MakeMKV, not HB. HB improved on it a bit (via preview) but not much so I didn't encode anything. So I just wanted to know if there is an established procedure for watching HDR content in SDR using HB. If not, that's okay, I can research more.

Re: 4K HDR to 1K SDR

I couldn't find any way to edit my post to say 2K.

And I haven't really encoded anything yet. Was hoping for general advice on this process before I get into that.

4K HDR to 1K SDR

Description of problem or question: I recently bought a 4K HDR Blu-ray of Battle Royale because it seemed like the best option I could find overall. I can't PLAY 4K or HDR, but my BD-ROM drive can read the discs. So I just wanted to rip it with MakeMKV and then compress it to 1080p using Handbrake....

Re: ripping video commentary?

Handbrake and MakeMKV both only report 1 video track per title on this disc.

Re: ripping video commentary?

Update: no dice, all the video tracks MKV could find were just the movie. No alternate video tracks or anything else. Oh well. Thanks again for the feedback.

Re: ripping video commentary?

Thanks, I updated the reg key and it's ripping now! That's weird because the popup warnings prior to updating the key said all freeware functions are still available but not shareware functions. And the purchase page on their web site says the same. https://i.ibb.co/zSxbHSx/mkv1.png https://i.ibb.co...

Re: ripping video commentary?

The freeware portion of MakeMKV doesn't include BD ripping. That falls under the shareware portion, which is $50 after you've had the software for over 30 days which I have.

Re: ripping video commentary?

Okay, thanks for the feedback. My next question was going to be if springing for the $50 version of MakeMKV might do the trick here but sounds like probably not.

Re: ripping video commentary?

It's an alternate video track of the commentators doing the commentary. On a dedicated blu-ray player it would be shown "picture in picture". I know that is not supported by Handbrake or VLC, but I just want to rip the video commentary video/audio track so I can watch it on its own.

Re: ripping video commentary?

Since it's the video commentary I'm looking for I may not have been too thorough in checking all those audio tracks.

I'm able to find it when watching on VLC, but just not in Handbrake.

Re: Crashes On Preview During Encode

I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure it didn't use to crash. But that was a long time ago and I have no idea which nightly build that would have been. I will use your suggestion of H.264 for preview and H.265 for encode, but it would be really nice if this could be fixed. Thanks regardless.
