Sorry, was looking at the wrong transcode - the SD transcodes on the MBP and iMac were much closer with around 318 for the MBP 323 for the iMac.

x265 is pretty slow on M1 anyway. AS Ritsuka said, there is a known issue regarding scheduling on macOS. It's being looked into as a probable cause. Heh ... just noticed that the straight over transcode of 1080p mkv to H.265 was getting about 57 fps, but the SD transcode including scaling was getting 225 fps on the MacBook Pro M1 Max.
