Re: Handbrake crashes on encode

Right, I realize that. I guess it's semantics. What I mean by "ripper" is that it converts the video on a DVD to a movie file format. I do use MactheRIpper sometimes when I have a lot of files.. But how is that related to the VLC thing? If I don't have VLC on my computer, can I put in a DVD and tak...

Re: Handbrake crashes on encode

You seem to be confused about just what a DVD ripper is. A ripper (alone) is not going to let you put DVD files on to your iPod or in iTunes. The result of a DVD "rip" is a VIDEO_TS folder full of VOB files. This folder behaves just like the DVD as far as most playback software is concerned, and can...

Re: Handbrake crashes on encode

They do tell people, right there on the front page. Scroll down to where it says "No more DVD decryption." It confuses a lot of people though. It's not on the download page though, and it's not obvious on the front page. Handbrake is famous for the ability to rip DVDs. But now... it doesn't. And th...

Re: Handbrake crashes on encode

2. Do you have the current version of VLC installed in your apps folder? HB now relies on VLC to decrypt DVDs. It does?!?! That's pretty important information, shouldn't that be included with the download or something? Or at least, tell people on the download page. I've got VLC 0.9.8, and "check fo...

Re: Magic Knight Rayearth DVDs - Incomplete scan.

And now it's becoming clearer whey HB is struggling with these disks.

They all play fine with the Apple DVD player, but VLC can't make heads or tails of them.

I'm not optimistic about getting these ripped at all now.

Re: Magic Knight Rayearth DVDs - Incomplete scan.

Ugh. What a nightmare. "Goofy" doesn't even begin to cover it with these disks. Thanks to Fairmount & the demo of DVDRemaster, I was able to take a closer look at the files. On disk one: Chapter 2 is the opening credits sequence. Four chapters in the middle are the body of each episode, omitting the...

It's s ad that we have to resort to using 2 pieces of software, one of them not cheap, to replace what use to be one of the best open-source projects on the Mac. Ah-Well. Nice Write-up! Re: Handbrake crashes on encode

1. Which version of OS X do you have installed? The current release of HB is for 10.5 only. The crash you are describing sounds exactly what happened to me when I tried to run 0.9.3 on a Mac running 10.4. If that's the problem, either upgrade your Mac or use HB version 9.1 2. Do you have the current...

Magic Knight Rayearth DVDs - Incomplete scan.

Apologies for the too-general headline last time. With all versions of HB I've tried, including 0.9.1, 0.9.3, and SVN 2070, the disks from the anime series "Magic Knight Rayearth" only show one of the four or five episode tracks per disk. I tried both a ripped image from MtR, and the disk itself. He...

Troublesome DVDs

So, I'm trying to archive my DVDs of "Magic Knight Rayearth", a fun little anime series. I pop in disk 1 and find that HB only sees one of the episodes out of the five that are on the disk. I tried a couple more disks from the collection, and had the same problem. This is the case whether I rip a VI...

Re: Multiple DVD to single TS to get over the 9GB limit(SOLVED?)

I guess I'm a little confused why you can't just rip each disk as a separate media file, then combine them afterwards using QT Pro (or whatever your favorite video editing tool is.)

Re: DTS Passthrough (sort of)

This is EPIC. I'm not too familiar with the procedure for applying patches like this, so I guess I've got some Wiki readin' to do (unless it gets rolled into a beta build in the near future.)

Kudos!

Re: DTS not supported in all containers

Unfortunately that does seem to be a bit beyond me. I don't know how or what that (seemingly) source code is used. Sorry. You're just going to have to wait then. Plus, I don't think this is goin' into a release until full (all reasonable containers) are supported. That patch is mainly for dts-in-ma...

Re: Intermittent video problem.

Ah, crap. I spoke too soon. The file I saved to the local drive DOES have a couple playback glitches. My eyes must have missed them when I was watching the first time. After EXHAUSTIVE testing, I've determined that the issues on that one file I copied to the local drive were unrelated. Then I found...

Re: Intermittent video problem.

Okay, I've got a real, REAL bad feeling that I know what the problem is. I'm posting it here because others might find it instructive. Right around the same time that HB went up to 0.9.3, I got rid of all my old little 300 GB drives and replaced them with a single 2TB MyBook, connected by FireWire t...

Re: Dialogue too soft, everything else loud

It sounds like it's possible that some of you are playing surround-sound on a system with an inadequate and/or missing center-channel speaker. That, or you have left & right speakers which are a lot more efficient (in terms of electric load) than your center channel. With a 1-channel signal, it woul...

Re: Subtitles

Play back the same DVD on the same screen with subtitles turned on, and I think you will find that HandBrake puts out subtitles that look every bit as good as what it gets from the DVD.

Sadly, good-looking subtitles are seldom a high priority with DVD producers.

Re: Intermittent video problem.

I'm assuming it's the same issue we all discussed in an earlier thread shortly after 0.9.3 was released, when rhester suggested to you it might be an x264 problem. Are you encoding on an Intel or PPC Mac? I'm doing both my encoding and playback on a Core2 Duo 2.0 Mac mini. I just downloaded the lat...

By current code I mean, literally, current code. The SVN head. Ah. So this is a known 0.9.3 flaw which has been addressed?
