you know, I would prefer not to have to stretch the new h265 out to 640x480 anyways as it will keep the file sizes much smaller. If this is a VLC issue with Ubuntu, then at least its not my rips!
Now if i could only figure out how to get rid of the digital horizontal lines form the old DVD rip!

I agree about narrowing down the problem, but as I mentioned in the VLC thread the same file plays fine on my VLC version on the Mac, but is stretched out on the Ubuntu VLC version. I downloded Mplyer for Mac and the files play in 4:3, so Im starting to think its the VLC version of ubuntu thats bugg...

thank you for the reply. Great observation about 264. When I encoded with this codec things played out in 4:3 Is there a reason h265 is acting up ? Here is some info from my other recent post in the VLC forums: " Using Handbrake I am attempting to make h.265 MKV versions of these 352 x 480 VOB ...

Thanks for your reply. It may well have been a VHS before it was a VOB, i dont know. Not sure how thats relevant though? =)
