How many bytes have been written so far
Quite often I have a desired file size in mind for the compressed video file. Of course, I could set the desired bit rate with full two-pass encoding, but that is so slow I usually just take a guess at what RF setting (constant quality) is required. Often at say 20% complete, I will hit stop and see...

Re: Handbrake encodes the audio but not the video
Thanks Woodstock. I should have been suspicious of the nightly build but I had forgotten that I had been using it. I think there was some feature of the nightlies I wanted. Are the nightlies still available? When I click on nightly downloads it takes me to a page talking about the snapshots which ar...

Handbrake encodes the audio but not the video
I have several files (one example shown below) that play fine in VLC but when I try to compress it using Handbrake with the software X265 encoder it produces an output containing only audio and no video. I searched the forums on this topic and found someone who suggested I needed the "-map 0:v&...

Re: Can I tell which encoder I had selected?
Hi Rodeo. Thanks for your help. MediaInfo did indeed prove useful. What I found was that when a software X265 encoder was used, the Encoding settings were shown by MediaInfo as well as the Writing library. However when the Nvidea hardware encoder was used, both those sections were missing. Interesti...

Can I tell which encoder I had selected?
I have re-encoded many video files using either the H.265 (x265) selection or the H.265 (Nvidia NVenc) selection. I now realize the videos encoded with the NVenc codec are inferior and I want to redo them using the software codec. (I still have the original source file). But I don't know how to dete...

Best settings for x265 encoding
I typically convert video using older codecs (e.g. divx, mpeg4) to x265 and sometimes convert x264 to x265 when the bit rate seems excessive. I usually want outputs with relatively small file sizes (with bit rates in the neighborhood of 700-800 kbps for 720p resolutions) but of course I would like t...

Pass number not shown in progress bar
I usually use 2pass encoding since this gives better results. However this makes the progress bar completely useless. When the progress bar shows 99% complete, this may mean that HandBrake is nearly finished ... or that it is only half way finished. This makes no sense to me. Why would they put in a...
