Ah, that's what granularity means. I've been using Handbrake for years, but never bother to look into that setting.
I'm glad that Nightly defaulted to .5 for whatever reason, because I'm finding it very useful. Thanks all.

CRF Slider - Half Steps
A few weeks ago there was a nightly build that introduced half steps on the constant quality slider (ie. 25.5, 26.5, 27.5). I ran some testing on it and it seemed like the half steps were giving me near identical quality as the full step right below it, but with slightly reduced filesizes. However, ...

x265 Animation Tune
https://x265.readthedocs.io/en/default/presets.html
It looks like there's an official Animation tune now. Will this be added to Handbrake? Alternatively, is adding the parameters in extra options basically the same as choosing the tune?

Any suggestions on preserving grain with x265?
The way x265 preserves grain seems very different from how it worked with x264. Using default x265 settings with no tune and most of the presets removes or smooths out grain considerably regardless of your CRF. Of course using the grain tune brings it back, however there's significant trade offs whe...

Re: Can someone explain NLMeans and does it actually do anything?
Might as well start with the original message about adding NLMeans: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30135&p=139077 Nice resource, didn't know that was here. Thanks. So I'm using 1.1.2 on Windows 7, and I'm encoding with h265 and grain tune. I've tried using NLMeans and its va...

Can someone explain NLMeans and does it actually do anything?
So I'm using 1.1.2 on Windows 7, and I'm encoding with h265 and grain tune. I've tried using NLMeans and its various strengths with its own grain tune, but the differences are negligible at best. I assumed I would get some savings with filesize, since my source is very grainy and NLMeans is supposed...

Re: NLMeans options
Heh, that fixed it. I think it had something to do with loading an unfinished job in my queue when I first booted up HB. I guess the settings from an older nightly didn't translate 1:1 with the new version. It's working as expected now. I re-booted the software and started a job fresh and everything...

Re: NLMeans options
Just to be clear, the preset/tune in the Video tab is fine, it's under the Filters tab when you select NLMeans that changed.

NLMeans options
It's probably been a month since I've used Handbrake, but I installed the latest nightly for Windows and noticed the preset and tune options for NLMeans is gone. Was it redundant having these options in conjunction with video settings? I would often use the film tune on the video tab, but would choo...

Re: Same quality settings for all films, or adjust per title?
H.264 Framerate: Same as source Encoder Preset:Very Slow Encoder Tune: Film Encoder Profile: Main Encoder Level: 4.0 The film was shot digitally (all the one listed were shot digitally) so no grain. You're right. A lot of motion in The Revenant. I very rarely get 5GB for a movie with these settings...

Re: Same quality settings for all films, or adjust per title?
Do you have any other settings? Those filesizes seem very suspect for x264 at 18 RF and passthrough audio, even with very slow. I use the same settings for a lot of films, but at 19 RF, and never get 5gb for a 2 hour movie. And 8GB for a movie like The Revenant seems crazy. I don't remember how grai...

Re: How to Reduce Video Size with HandBrake in X265 step-by-step instructions on how to encode, quality HEVC 5.1 Color F
These step by step guides are always dangerous. I know when I started using Handbrake, the first thing I did was Google "best Handbrake settings" or something similar. I ended up following some guide and converting all of my DVDs and BDs to these settings. Then I started coming around thes...

Anyway to figure out which version x265 Handbrake is using?
I'm pretty sure the latest stable is using 2.3, but is there anywhere to confirm that? I'm mostly asking in regards to the nightlies to see if they're using a newer version.

Re: What's your video format preference?
Kodi and Plex, depending on the TV I'm using.
MKV
H264 for most movies
H265 for really grainy or shaky movies (to help reduce filesizes), and always for blu ray TV shows.
Passthrough audio or FLAC

Re: All of my x265 encodes keep failing
Just wanted to follow up on this.
I removed the USB drive in all my encodes, and they have been successful on both of my computers. My home computer, the file stayed locally throughout, and my work computer I used my google drive to transfer the files to. I haven't had a problem since.

Re: All of my x265 encodes keep failing
Yeah, I'll have to try it at my house. I've been bringing files to work to encode on my work PC, so I need to limit all of my variables and just rip and encode straight from my computer.rollin_eng wrote:I would try using an internal drive just to rule out your USB drive.

Re: All of my x265 encodes keep failing
So I just looked at the source of my third encode, and there's indeed something wrong at that timecode. Could it be MakeMKV that's problematic or my bluray drive that's corrupted my mkv rips? Maybe copying the file to my usb drive is having a problem? I'll have to check the file on my computer at ho...

Re: All of my x265 encodes keep failing
That certainly makes the most sense, but I was able to convert one to x264 with no problems, and then when I tried x265 it failed. The differences might have been Handbrake versions and I also used a different computer.

All of my x265 encodes keep failing
I made this post a week ago where, but this is seeming like a larger issue so I'm making a new one. I've been trying out encoding my media with the x265 codec, and I've only had one success out of three so far. This one worked without error: HandBrake 1.0.1 (2016122900) - 64bit OS: Microsoft Windows...

Re: Can anyone tell me why my encode keeps stopping at same place evertime?
Just wanted to follow up on this as it's still not working. I ran it through mkvtoolnix and the encode actually went a little further, but it still failed in the middle. I then re-ripped the bluray with makemkv and it seems like the encode made it a little further, but still fails. Here's that log: ...

Can anyone tell me why my encode keeps stopping at same place evertime?
I'm on the latest stable, Windows 7, and while encoding with x265, it stops encoding at the same place every time. This is all I could find in the log: [matroska, webm @ 000000002aefca60] Invalid track number 696869 Any ideas? Would it have something to do with my makemkv rip? HandBrake 1.0.1 (201612...

Do you really need to transcode? It would take seconds to change the aspect ratio with FFmpeg.

Re: Conversion from Blu-Ray MKV to MP4 has slowed WAAAAY down
I don't even need to see your logs to tell you why it's taking so long. You're encoding Aliens. Aliens is very grainy, has a lot of movement, and is a long movie. I think the first time I encoded Aliens my output file was nearly the same size as the source. Try a slower preset and raise your RF. CLI...
