Re: From A Unique Perspective

IMO, if you are encoding 1080p or lower, just use H.264. Two years ago, H.265 looked like it would be the future, but it kind of fizzled out -- no doubt due to patent royalties. The good thing about x264 is that it is really easy to get good encoding, no secret sauce needed. I disagree wholehearted...

Re: From A Unique Perspective

I do have a question: why not leave the source files as-is? Why do you need to transcode? I know the VHS rips I have are not ‘clean’, videlicet they could be more pleasant to the eyes. This is my attempt to make them so. Also, I am contemplating transcoding the remultiplexed sources that is my DVD ...

Re: From A Unique Perspective

You can't avoid preserving artefacts. And you can't really know what's an artefact and what is legitimate content. The safest choice is to assume you have a clean source without artefacts and set your RF for creating output that is visually indistinguishable from such a source. The only truly clean...

Re: From A Unique Perspective

Yes. bob generally means create a frame for every field and doubles the framerate. The benefit of bob is more fluid motion. How does that relate to EEDI2 in the context of the EEDI2 Bob preset? I assume both Bob and EEDI2 Bob require the frame rate adjustment whereas EEDI2 obviously does not. When ...

Re: From A Unique Perspective

If you are using the interlace detect filter, then yes it is ok to also leave either deinterlace yadif or decomb enabled. The default settings of decomb do pretty much the same thing as the default setting of yadif. Yadif is faster in some cases because it uses had coded assembly. decomb is faster ...

From A Unique Perspective

Hello. I read the now-outdated Tips For Encoding Videos page but have additional questions. About me – I promise this is relevant to my questions. I am bereft of eyesight and have been since birth; am a self-proclaimed audiophile, audio engineer, and computer programmer, but prefer audio manipulatio...

Re: HandBrake Refuses To Transcode One Of My DVD Discs

Last year or so I used SlySoft AnyDVD HD to decrypt the disc. That usually worked very well for me but here is the log which really does not say much. Perhaps I should run a Boot Camp installation and re-decrypt this one? To answer your other question, title 4 is the feature title on this disc. It i...

HandBrake Refuses To Transcode One Of My DVD Discs

This never happened to me before and I did everything I could to troubleshoot the issue including testing the latest nightly build. I use the nightly builds which give me no problems. Today I added another fully decrypted DVD image to the queue but HandBrake refuses to transcode it and reveals the a...

Re: DVD To MKV: Variable Frame Rate Setting Some Times Results In A File With A Constant Frame Rate

Is there any like program for Mac OS that does report the set flags for frame rate and possibly any other data about which MediaInfo is inaccurate?? Other app store apps use the same MediaInfo library so they must be just as inaccurate. I will ensure the log for the next supposedly constant frame ra...

Re: DVD To MKV: Variable Frame Rate Setting Some Times Results In A File With A Constant Frame Rate

I accidentally deleted the log. When the matted version is finished I will investigate if the same result occurs. If so I will paste its log. Why is the frame rate [or any data] from MediaInfo unreliable? Is there a more reliable like program for Mac OS? I used MediaInfo for Windows once upon a time...

DVD To MKV: Variable Frame Rate Setting Some Times Results In A File With A Constant Frame Rate

On my system, HandBrake [latest nightly build at the time of each conversion] is used strictly to convert from DVDs to MKVs. One of the settings chosen as default is the variable frame rate radio button and the frame rate is always same as the source. It does not occur frequently but from time to ti...

Re: newbie question about "loss"

Point well taken. Codec notwithstanding, would you agree compression with regards to file size is most optimal when set to Placebo? Time required for the system to encode is not exactly optimal but I guess it depends on the system used. A twelve core late 2013 Mac Pro would certainly require less ti...

Re: newbie question about "loss"

I never used the codec thus I believe you. With regards to your MP3 analogy above, I can clearly hear the difference between MP3 with a sample rate of 48000 hertz and bit rate [variable or constant] of 320 kilobytes per second and any lossless file of the same sound. If I could see there is no telli...

Re: X265 encoding settings to retain source quality

Since x265 is very new I haven't been able to find any guidelines for converting. I want the quality to look about the same while creating the smallest file possible, so how much can I push it? Before I explain the settings I use for purposes of highest quality and greatest efficiency I will mentio...

Re: Editing Software and "best settings" for DVD to mp4

It would be silly if the resulting output file's size was either equal to or above the source. Even if it was slightly lower it would be. Also, it would be silly if time was an issue but they mentioned it is of no importance. This means with the time/efficiency factor set to Placebo there should be ...

Re: newbie question about "loss"

It also depends on the specific parameters of the profile you use. I customised mine so nothing is removed and compression is most efficient. H.265 [x265] is my codec of choice and the immense hours my system requires to transcode the DVDs' feature titles is worthwhile to me. I have never used h.264...

Re: Editing Software and "best settings" for DVD to mp4

Second question: I know, this question is asked very often but what are the best settings when i convert from DVD to .mp4 when i want the best quality? I'm aware that the three important things to convert are time to encode, quality and file size. Right now, i use the standart "high" sett...
