Re: Advanced Options ref-frames. Is (3) = 3?

...pretty soon as it's going to get more and more irrelevant with time. As time moves on, will the default presets that will come with newer versions, be less compatible with older devices? In other word, should I keep an old copy of Handbrake for device compatibility sake and the newest version fo...

Re: Advanced Options ref-frames. Is (3) = 3?

Thanks to all. OK, I'll take it as given. The advanced tab is no longer maintained and considered deprecated. It's not been updated for any changes in x264 details so there is a good chance all the "default" tags and any selection behaviours are now wrong as well. I still have the old vers...

Re: Advanced Options ref-frames. Is (3) = 3?

OK, then why does the resulting file have 4ref frames? Here is a screenshot of what mediainfo says about the resulting file (why is there no picture upload available?). https://www.dropbox.com/s/nsqd149r5wyhipb/screenshot.png?dl=0 summary https://www.dropbox.com/s/oobkz9g9kzp8sa2/screenshot1.png?dl=...

Advanced Options ref-frames. Is (3) = 3?

Hi,

I still have version 0.10.5.

When you select "default (3)" in the advanced tab -> ref-frames, should that result in a max of 3 referemce frames or is the number just a number assigned, standing for a certain set or what one would call it?

Thanks.

Re: Does Handbrake eliminate filler Bytes (NALUs)?

OK :) In Germany the public TV broadcasters send VBR streams in a CBR set, so they need to fill it with filler bytes. My PVR can record them. I would like to save them to my PC (e.g. for educational purpose) and I wondered, if I should eliminate the filler bytes beforehand in a remux tool or if Hand...

Re: Is it true that there is no big gain of using more than 5 reference frames?

The reason we limit refs and bframes to 5 (for the Super HQ presets that would otherwise use more, especially with animation) is compatibility. Certain other settings can add one ref or bframe, so this is as high as we can go, especially with certain Apple devices. This is the reason why I tried to...

Re: Is it true that there is no big gain of using more than 5 reference frames?

Thank you @nhyone. So this tells me how many ref frames have been used (I can use an app called mediainfo for that, too) and to what extend (in percentages). But can I only restrict the number of ref frames used by using the advanced panel or are there other ways in Handbrake? You have to ask if it ...

Re: Converting file to play on a DVD player!

For US$30 or so, you can buy media players that read USB or SD media and play 1080p h.264 video, and send it to your friend with a cheap flash drive. I just got one for my sister, who bought a DVD player, then had to buy a TV that it could feed, and still ends up with hoping the used DVDs she buys ...

Re: Converting file to play on a DVD player!

@nonsoloinglese If Toast hasn't been cut back its features since the last version I used (Version 8) you can just use your h.264-HD. Select the appropriate option in Toast (in Version 8 it was: ->video->DVD (not TS_folder! This is in case you have an already authored folder from another DVD)). If yo...

Re: Is it true that there is no big gain of using more than 5 reference frames?

Thank you. Which of the given presets are considered "Super High Quality presets" in Handbrake or which are not, if these are less? When I choose the "Normal"-preset of the given ones built in Handbrake and choose RF21.75 and then select "tune: none" and Main@3.2 it sti...

Is it true that there is no big gain of using more than 5 reference frames?

I read that more than 5 reference frames adds only minimal quality (maybe even not perceivable), but comes at a big increase of complexity, which can be challening for old hardware when decoding. Unfortunately, 16 will break playback on a lot of hardware devices (and possibly some software players)....

Re: Converting file to play on a DVD player!

Why would you "prepare" the file with Handbrake, if Toast has to encode it a second time? In other words, why do you think you have to prepare the file with Handbrake in order to let Toast use it?

Re: Better let Handbrake convert *ts or *ps?

The only way to conjoin long-gop files correctly and reliably is with VRD, not concatenation in a muxer. That is for all the reasons mentioned above, whether or not the concatenated file appears to play correctly. That is NOTHING like joining intraframe DV files, which are all i-frame and thus can ...

Re: Better let Handbrake convert *ts or *ps?

Thank you. My aim wasn't to repair or re-wrap the *mts file. My goal was: - I have a 1h movie and on my PVR it shows as one title in the menue - on my Mac it shows as 6 files of 10 minutes each - now, because I don't want to make a playlist everytime on my Mac when I want to watch the movie, I "...

I haven't converted anything with handbrake, so there is no log You are, of course, wrong. An activity log was generated as soon as you opened the files in HB, which you must have done if you saw audio tracks in the audio tab. Od course, sorry. So, here without converting, the log test1.ts [21:25:3...

Re: Better let Handbrake convert *ts or *ps?

Handbrake will do fine with ts as long as source errors are kept to a minimum. mts is unpredictable because if usually come from tape source. So running it through VideoRedo is advised. I can't use *mts anyway, since *mts is the snipets, the source from the PVR. After editing in Avidemux I have eit...

Re: Better let Handbrake convert *ts or *ps?

Activity Log is required for support requests. See Must Read: How To Get Questions Answered on These Forums for details Container doesn't matter to HB. I suspect you've reordered the audio tracks before HB, not HB doing container-dependent ordering. Of course if you'd provided the mandatory activit...

Not, if you have no AIC and ProRes files.

I am going to buy equippment to be able to capture S-VHS in AIC or ProRes format. Until then I only have the possibility to capture S-VHS as DV, which is what I do.
