Re: X265 what CQ value and settings do you use?

HandBrake always feeds 8-bit video to the encoder. So the source is always 8-bit. 4:2:0 8-bit is horrible for animations. With the new Blu-ray specs, I hope they encode those things with at least 4:2:2 10-bit. I do not know why they have not included support for it with past devices (not sure). Is ...

Re: VP9 support

I didn't compare at higher bitrates where it still may lose to x264 as it did in the past. I would check that again. In my current tests, VP9 is beating x264 from low to high bitrates (It didn't previously): x264 / VP9: 42.95 / 43.40 dB (500 kbps) 46.27 / 46.51 dB (1500 kbps) 47.52 / 47.73 dB (2500...

Re: Webm support

Especially since Handbrake supports VP8 now, another container format could be interesting (especially when VP9 will be usable in the future) If I remember correctly, VP8 was added to handbrake just to replace Theora. And why do you think VP9 is not yet usable? He's seen the benchmarks and results?...

Re: Worth using x265 yet?

If you want to compare x264 and x265, you must use ABR instead of CRF. x264 / x265 (768x432): 42.88 / 43.57 dB (500 kbps) 46.30 / 46.84 dB (1500 kbps) 47.55 / 48.07 dB (2500 kbps) 2 pass encoding was used for both. x264 settings: bitrate x, preset placebo, tune psnr, threads 1, keyint infinite, min...

Re: Worth using x265 yet?

You used vastly different CRF values and provided no proof that these produced even close to the same quality output. I see I was completely mistaken. Results: x265: 0.9902490 (20.109dB) x264: 0.9901302 (20.057db) Settings: x265: preset slow, tune ssim, crf 14, aq-mode 2, bframes 4, ref 3, me star,...

Re: Worth using x265 yet?

Worth using x265 yet? It depends on what you want, speed or quality per filesize? If you are more interested in quality per filesize then I would waste time encoding with x265. But I will be adopting VP9 this time... :D My obscure tests on Intel Celeron G1610, 2 cores. Video res was 768x432: x265: ...

Re: handbrake encoding quality

Am I right that using any encoder will inevitably lead to quality loss? Yes, unless you used a "LOSSLESS" encoder/settings. sQ: Why? sA: Because the encoders need to "destroy" parts of your original data (i.e. "excluding" details) to increase possible compression ratio. For me, video quality is par...

Re: QSV Decoding?!

Hi, if I have a QSV CPU, is it possible to enable QSV only for decoding but x264 for enoding to speed up but keep quality? Even if you double your CPU power, the speed gain would be quite insignificant. Unless you are using very fast encoder settings. I'd recommend you have more patience to wait or...

The best lossless method to copy a dvd is simply to copy the movies from the dvd itself (yet the quality from dvds is very bad given its purpose).

I'd use "dvdbackup" for that.

Re: VP8, VP9 WebM encoding feature. Theora

Hi, could you remove Theora in nightlys. Why not leave Theora as an option? It is OK that VP8 can provide more compression/quality but Theora is much faster to encode. VP8 is significantly (I'd say much) slower than x264. it is an outdated and nearly unsupported video codec. VP8 is much better for ...

Re: CPU Usage 100%

If you don't want to utilize all your CPU then the only possibility would be to lower the number of cores it uses, assuming your CPU has more than one physical or logical core (obviously). Otherwise, your CPU will be fully utilized all the time (till encoding finishes). But you can still lower the p...

Anyway, x265 might be usable in 2020 if not after. But till there I'd like to see an alternative thing to shine more (VP9, YkT, Daala).

Very unlikely, as money is their biggest (if not the only) motivation.
