Re: 10bit to 8bit produces a way darker look

I guess this topic is obsolete. I just found this: oversaturated dark areas playing HDR 10 bit People reported here that HDR 10bit shows a darken/desaturate video, when they use the newest IINA video player. Actually I have the same issue with VLC (e.g. compared to MPC). Obviously those players inte...

Re: 10bit to 8bit produces a way darker look

Your source is HDR, if you want to play it on a player that doesn't support HDR, you need to enable the colorspace filter and set it to Bt.709. I assume your 2k version is not HDR. Movie studios do a different color grading for HDR and SDR, so they won't look the same anyway. Yea that makes sense, ...

10bit to 8bit produces a way darker look

As the title says, I want to convert a 4k (10bit, HDR) HEVC video into a 2k (8bit) x265 mkv one. I did this with Handbrake by only changing the dimensions (width/height/cropping). Since I have the same video also recorded as 2k (but with lower quality) I am able to compare the results. Result/Issue:...

Re: HB DVD to x265 transcode, colors look "washed out"

He's right, bt470bg transfer function is gamma 2.8, and HandBrake doesn't support it yet (probably because so few DVD-Video used it? Who knows after all this years). And we can't just pass the tag through because it's not supported by modern players. I think there are some plans to add a color spac...

Re: HB DVD to x265 transcode, colors look "washed out"

VLC never tried to display colors correctly. It can do HDR to SDR tone mapping, but nothing more (if I remember correctly, on Mac it was uber broken, never tried on Windows). However, it should not look so different. But you might have better luck asking this question on VLC support forums or irc c...

Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

Given the changes in x265 over the last "years", they're almost certainly a bad idea if you've been using them that long. Much better off with the preset/tune system which are set up for the current version of x265. Yea you are right. I played a lot with the settings in the last days. My ...

Thanks mduell for your answer! Extra options: strong-intra-smoothing=1:me=1:lookahead-slices=5:rd=3:psy-rdoq=0.00:qpmax=51 Where did you find these extra settings? Some blogger on the internet? I'd disregard them and stick to the preset/tune system, developed by actual encoder experts. Actually that...

Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

No, SSIM is a way to measure quality, you will find it in the activity log when he encode is done (if you enabled it); vmaf is another (possibly better) algorithm to measure quality, but HandBrake doesn't support it. Yes, that is what I have thought when i defined it as a "rating ([...] for ch...

Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

Thanks @Ritsuka and @mduell for your answers! If you want to compare the quality, you should check the ssim or encode two clips at the same bitrate and use your eyes. Be sure to tune for SSIM, so the psychovisual model is nerfed. I don't understand "nerfed" in this context. Do you mean, if...

Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

So, I transcoded the video anew with frame-threads=5, to get the same frame-threads like in the 1.0.7. Result: Still same size, 1100 MB = larger than with 1.0.7... => Changing Frame Threads has no impact to the file size. Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

Frame threads changed. I did not change the frames, probably it was changed by Handbrake update? Does the frame-threads really cause this larger file? I will add it via extra options "frame-threads=5" and transcode it again... P.S. I went through the entire logs of 1.0.7 and 1.1.1, differ...

Re: Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

You used different settings. This is why an Activity Log is required for support requests. Hi mduell , thanks for your answer. No I did not. I just updated to 1.1.1 and used the same custom present. Never touched this for years. (Sadly I have no log for 1.0.7 and 1.1.1 anymore :-/ ) *EDIT* I found ...

Same movie encoding, file 10% larger than before update

Description of problem or question: I used Handbrake 1.0.7 for a long time. After I updated to 1.1.1, my encodings feels larger than normal. I tested it also: via 1.0.7 Movie X got 983 MB via 1.1.1 Movie X got 1100 MB Why are my movies more like 10% bigger than before? Is it possible to get the sam...

Re: HB stops after 20%

A year ago I ripped and transcoded a movie (source: bluray) to mkv. Sadly I have to use this mkv as current source, because the original bluray is broken and I need this movie in lower quality. Is it possible to "normalize" this mkv-source? I mean, the mkv-movie actually works fine in (e.g...

HB stops after 20%

Hey, I transcoded many movies successfully. However there is one that "fails" after ~ 20% ( = ~30min of about 150min movie length). No error message pop'd up. It just finished it normally. Only the movie file size (due to movie length) told me that there was an error. I am not very fimilar...

Re: no title found

Actually in ma case I could solve the problem by re-ripping the DVD. I dont know why, but somehow one of these lil *.ifo or *.bup files were corrupt/broken or something like that. After I overwrote these files again, it worked.

1st time for me. So It wasnt a bug thru HB. Thx for support anyway!

Re: no title found

Well, if you don't decrypt your source, what will do it? Hint: not HandBrake. Sry for misunderstanding. It was decrypted, but in the past. My source is a DVD-copy. Full explanation: I have a DVD collection safetly stowed in cellar and I have copies (rips, decrypted) of this. Now I copied my copies ...
