Re: Cant get subtitles to show even though burned in selected
Is the video being cropped? I don't understand how subs work, exactly, but sometimes they show up in black bars below the video. If that gets cropped off then the subs won't show up.

Re: Who knew BD subtitles (in MP4s) were such a mess?
That works OK, but I'd like to get all the English in there somehow for those times when you just can't understand those bloody Brits. :) Plus, with that series, especially, I'm always backing up and turning on the subs just to figure out the names of people/places. Can the subs to be made soft be e...

Who knew BD subtitles (in MP4s) were such a mess?
I've done my 300 or so DVDs and gotten everything on to a Mac mini connected to my TV. I bought the BD/DVD combo of The Big Bang Theory S6 a while back when it came out, got the BD/DVD combo of Game Of Thrones S3 a couple weeks ago, bought a cheapy external Bluray player (my first BD player ever) th...

Re: Is DVD quality going down, or is it me?
Just getting back to this... Thanks for the info. It must be some combination of everything you guys have posted...yes, all DVDs are not created equal, the original source for these online videos are from HDTV broadcasts, etc. I tried just lite denoising, but it still didn't look better/the same as ...

Re: Reference frames/iOS bug?
The issue with 16 reference frames has been reported before. It's Apple's bug, FWIW. Oh. I didn't see that in any search. You see to use unmodified x264 presets - why are you using the advanced panel instead of the new system? I normally only use the built-in High Profile values, with the RF value ...

Reference frames/iOS bug?
There's a small thread on the Apple discussion boards where, seemingly all of a sudden, HB videos are not playing on iOS devices. For normal settings (from a DVD) I use High Profile, RF=18, x264 Preset=veryslow, detelecine=Default, then all English language tracks and subtitles. These don't play on ...

Handbrake seems OK on OS X Mavericks
It's in the middle of transcoding Casablanca from a MacTheRipper'ed copy of the DVD. So far so good.

Re: Is DVD quality going down, or is it me?
Denoise! I didn't think of that. Let me play with it a bit. I was thinking it would just smooth everything out until it looked "flat" (hard to describe), but maybe not. Thanks!

Is DVD quality going down, or is it me?
When I transcode something with High Profile, RF: 18, x264 Preset: very slow, Detelecine: Default, I get a 260-ishMB file for a 22min TV show (after about an hour of crunching on a 13" MacBook Pro). If I go on the web and download the same show I can get a file (.mp4) that is about 170MB and th...
