Re: Bitrate X265 vs X264 comparable?

There has not been a single instance in my testing or experience where x264 gives a better bitrate than x265 with equivalent settings (x265 files are significantly smaller), so the idea of a "crossover point" mystifies me. I regularly encode low res content with HEVC, and I'm very happy wi...

Re: H.265 resolution, bitrate and tips

The benefit of 10-bit formats is that you have more color space, so there is less dithering needed by the encoder, thus you get smoother color gradients and better compression. Theorycrafting, I would expect the benefits to be greatest when resizing from the source, and the additional gradients crea...

Re: H.265 resolution, bitrate and tips

I have another question. Yesterday after converting 1080p into 720p i said, lets try to go a little lower. And i entered 720x480 because i found that resolution online. And i was happy with the quality at 720x480 22 RF and file size was tiny. But i failed to see that this is not a 16:9 resolution. ...

Re: Question About Subtitle

Most people will deal with subtitles separately, outside Handbrake, unless of course burned in subtitles are desired, and tbh, you don't want those unless your player doesn't handle any subtitle formats. Implementation of many of the "nice to have" features really comes down to whether som...

Re: Having issues with static noise please help

You want to keep the original track if your scenario allows for it (size, bitrate, format compatibility), as each lossy re-encode lowers the quality and introduces distortion, even at the same or higher bitrate. It might be very obvious, or it might be barely audible. Assuming starting size/bitrate/...

Re: Transcode Audio Only?

If you want to stick with Handbrake, you can always just select the lowest quality video settings, and let it go to work, it will go very quickly, then re-mux the streams you want from the two files (video from original, audio from reencode).

Re: Fixing Aspect Ratio of Videos

the only way I can get it close to 4:3 is by changing the resolution to 592x400 It might be as simple as forcing encode resolution to 4:3 aspect, but 592x400 is not 4:3 in any case, that's why you're having problems. Post logs as instructed, it will make everything much more clear. but this obvious...

Re: Final output size

The est file size figure only applies to encodes that are using targeted/average bitrate mode. You should really be using the RF slider instead, which is impossible to tell what the final size will be. Use bitrate targets only when you need the file to fit into a certain size for some reason. Online...

Maybe something like Amazon Elastic Transcoder service is more suitable for your application.

Re: splitting files

You can use the mkvtoolnix GUI to split up your mp4 file as you want on markers. This will output MKV files, so you may need to further remux to MP4. Maybe some here can suggest a tool that can read/write MP4 directly. Unfortunately, I don't know my MP4 tools since I don't use the format myself.

Re: 4K RF Setting Help

How good is the 4k quality on a smartphone camera? It's a short enough clip, you can do some test encodes to see what looks good. Assuming the camera is not that great (although you seem impressed with it) downscaling to 1080p with slightly higher CRF and preset might be plenty good enough even if t...

Re: Forced Subtitles: What Is Your Personal Process?

Subtitles can be a pain. Aside from the obvious foreign-language bits which MAY have forced subtitles (or may just be burned into the movie itself), there might be other subtitles too. I think it was one of the Avengers movies or something like that, that has a subtitle track when new locations are ...

Re: newbie question about "loss"

A good analogy is CD vs MP3. The MP3 is much smaller, but still sounds almost as good, for most use cases. In the audio world, we have psychoacoustics, which is how we can throw away information, but still fool the brain into thinking nothing has been taken away. In the video world, it is the same. ...

Re: I want this settled: What is considered transparent video quality?

Only thing that matters is your perception and what you find acceptable. For the "back up" or format shifting use case, either rip without re-coding, or re-code to a quality that is a) acceptable to you, b) acceptable to your disk space, and c) acceptable to your time constraints and patie...

Re: The DVD compression is Bogus

It is not bogus, this is how compression works. What is "DVD compression" anyways? You set your quality and options to whatever your target goals are. If you want "DVD quality", then take the DVD stream and don't re-code it. We've "solved" this in the audio world, by th...

Re: Forced Subtitles

You mark the subtitle track as default or forced in mkvmerge. Ultimately, it is up to the player to decide what subtitles to show, and most will not show subtitles when the audio track is the same language as your language/the subtitle language. In Plex as well, you can set the subtitle before playi...

Re: How to change container without transcoding video or audio?

MKVMerge (from mkvtoolnix) will create an MKV from a wide variety of other containers. For other formats (like MP4) there are also tools, just search around for something like "mp4 muxer/multiplexer". Although, mp4 can be very sticky about the stream formats, mkv handles pretty much anythi...

Automatically no, but you can que them up. Open the file in Handbrake, and select "Chapters" from the 3rd dropdown menu on top of the window. Set your encode settings as you wish. In the two dropdowns on either side of "through" beside the Chapters dropdown, select 1-1 to isolate...

Re: Confused about display output

What is the question though? The aspect information in HB is correct. Even though the DVD insert claims 1.78, the VLC screenshot shows a letterboxed picture. This is where you get the PAR 8/9; stored it is 720x480, displayed it is 720x540 ie 480/8*9 (or 640x480 ie 720/9*8 for heathens like me). Ther...

Re: Is it possible to set a default frame width for videos?

When you create a profile, you have the option to set video size. There was a similar question a few weeks ago as I recall. When you load a video and select your profile, the dimensions will get rescaled as well to fit into your bounding box.

Use MKVtoolnix and MKVmergegui to multiplex in the original audio after the encode (assuming you're targeting MKV), and remove the audio track in Handbrake encode, since there's no FLAC passthrough.

Re: Re-sizing A Video To A Width & Height Bigger Than Origin

As others stated, this is only possible through command line, as the GUI prevents you from entering width/height that exceeds the source. The only exception is for cases where the encoded aspect ratio is not the same as the display aspect ratio, mostly seen only in DVDs. Even then, you are still con...

Re: Cannot set several options on windows GUI

The max resolution is a setting in user profile. Set your width/height as desired, then when you create the profile it is one of the options to use those settings (max picture size = custom iirc). Each time you scan a new file in, you do have to toggle between profiles for the profile to be actually...

There are no "best" settings, because each source material and personal use case is different and requires potentially different settings. That's why they are there.
