Have you tried copying the DVD to a directory on your hard drive, to see if there are unreadable files? From your description, there isn't any encryption involved, so a straight copy should work.

Rip with MakeMKV, queue the MKV files up for handbrake to handle while you do other things. Get all the DVD handling out of the way quickly.

You need to be careful with this, because it CAN overwrite your source if you disregard the warnings. Make sure the output file name is not the same as the input.

Handbrake does not remove encryption on its own. Ripping tools, such as MakeMKV, will remove the encryption and give you files handbrake can process.
