Re: Best bang-for-buck upgrade?
Rip with MakeMKV, queue the MKV files up for handbrake to handle while you do other things. Get all the DVD handling out of the way quickly.

Re: Default output path the same as input path - possible?
Windows, specify the path in Preferences->Output files with {source_path}
You need to be careful with this, because it CAN overwrite your source if you disregard the warnings. Make sure the output file name is not the same as the input.

Re: Handbrake doesn't remember the source folder after today's packages update
Also note that the Arch repository is not under the control of the handbrake team, and is listed as a "known broken" distribution. It would seem you've run into one of the reasons for that. A change of packages for the OS should not affect a properly-built handbrake install.

Re: This is not a valid destination directory - err msg
Without logs, we're handicapped in what we can suggest. You didn't even mention your operating system, or what you've changed recently. Things like adding/removing drives or installing an operating system update that changes permissions can all affect what is and isn't a "valid location". ...

If you target an MKV destination, do the subtitles continue to "pile up"? Do you have an example of the SRT file you can post?

Re: Help for old TV Series DVDs
You could start with the Wikipedia explanation of telecine. Interlacing is part of that.
The primary thing with "detelecine" is correcting the frame rate correction, i.e., when film was captured at one frame rate, and broadcast at a different frame rate.

On the filters page, in the same place as the deinterlace filter settings. It defaults to checked in most presets for speed.

Re: Help for old TV Series DVDs
Since you did not provide a log, help beyond mduell answering your direct question is difficult. You MAY want to disable "comb detect", which will force handbrake to always apply your deinterlace filter. It will be a bit slower, but some sources have subtle interlace artifacts are missed w...

Re: Encoding consistently fails prematurely
Copying a DVD to an ISO file doesn't remove encryption, unless you have a special utility doing it. I occasionally use BDlot (very old program, no longer supported) to make "decrypted ISO" files. But, because I usually use MakeMKV, I usually just told it to make a standard ISO copy, and le...

Re: Can I convert a movie's audio codec only?
There are multiple graphic front ends to ffmpeg available. It has the advantage of being available for many platforms, and a lot of people write front ends to match their (personal or group) idea of the "perfect interface" for their operating system.

Re: Encoding consistently fails prematurely
The logs show problems reading the source (not getting the number of frames expected). What are you using to decrypt it, and are you using a physical source, or a disk image? The "fail at the end" might be when handbrake rewrites the MP4 index, and hits a permission error (you can write, b...

Not with handbrake - it's going to do the video.
ffmpeg can do it - they even have examples of doing that on their help page.

Re: What the crop?
Generally speaking, handbrake is not suffer from "disk I/O bottlenecks". I'm reading AND writing to a gigabit-capable NAS, at far below its capabilities. I can do multiple simultaneous rips with MakeMKV while handbrake is encoding, and handbrake keeps the 4-core 8-thread i5 CPU saturated. ...

Re: No Valid Source or Titles Found
Commercial disks are encrypted. Handbrake, by itself, does not remove that encryption. There are third-party add-on libraries available that will do the decryption, but those are not supported by the handbrake team for a number of reasons - one of which you're experiencing, that updates can break th...

Re: Constant crashing with 4k video
Handbrake makes for a good stress test for overclocking - it WILL trip things that other stress tests do not. It uses a much wider number of instructions than simply "heat it up until it shuts down" tests, as well as a lot more memory manipulation. It MIGHT be worthwhile to swap your high/...

I assume you've restarted Windows during this adventure, to make sure there isn't any code from a previous run sticking around in memory.

Re: Constant crashing with 4k video
Per s55 in the linked github issue, it's called "process isolation" in preferences. It defaults to "on" when you install the nightly, but changing it will "stick" as you update.
It allows the queue to start multiple encodes if there is processing capability available.

Re: Constant crashing with 4k video
OK, as pointed out by mduell, this is part of something new in the nightly, the ability to submit multiple simultaneous jobs. I would suggest disabling that feature, and try the encodes again. If it still crashes, you should get better error messages, at least. There's a similar discussion on github...

Re: Constant crashing with 4k video
Define "crash" in this context. Machine stops working? Program closed by operating system? System slows to a crawl? Rude noises emanate from the case as smoke rises? The log just stops, which normally would mean that the operating system detected a problem. That would create a system log e...

Re: Money Scam?
If you were ripping commercial disks with handbrake in the past, you were using an unsupported third-party library to remove the encryption. That library still exists, but integrating it into handbrake has been unsupported for over a decade - it worked with many disks, but not others, and the linkag...

Re: How accurate is my idea of bitrate/filesize estimation?
The more detail you ask the encoder to preserve, the more bits it takes to do it. Grain (actual grain, not artificially-produced) and "static" (think old movies from damaged prints) exhibit a lot of movement, so that needs to be accounted for. Raising the RF level tells the encoder to toss...
