Re: HB fails encodes due to source

Without logs, we cannot know what the problem is, so "is it a common issue?" is a worthless question. I read and write to network locations with handbrake all the time - my raw video workspace is on the same NAS that the finished files are loaded to. Give us some logs, and maybe we can fig...

Re: lossless conversion from VOB to MP4 ...

Zero additional loss, use a tool that can re-mux the MPEG2 video into an MP4 file. The options vary with your operating system. Handbrake is always going to re-encode the video. h.264 video is far more efficient than MPEG2, so the files will get smaller, unless you tell the encoder to go "lossl...

Mine is actually based on the NTSC version, 480p30, but you have the essence. I'm not buying as much PAL stuff on DVD anymore.

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?

I really cannot say if EEDI2 is better or worse, as I haven't played with it. That is the thing, though; you CAN play with settings. You don't even have to do full encodes... Pick a chapter of a video that has a mixture of movement and detail, and encode it with various settings changes. Compare the...

Re: DONT burn subtitles?

The standard for MP4 moves with money. Things Apple wanted got implemented . Things Dolby wanted, got implemented (you can put DolbyVision in an MP4). Things people want, like PGS subtitle support, well, companies with money don't want that, because PGS is a standard for Bluray, not used many other ...

Re: trying to get True-HD atmos to work

Plex adds an additional element, as it can have device profiles that require changes to streams. Their application is designed to be transparent to the user - your device gets only what it can handle. There is a lot of discussion out there about Plex not passing through DolbyVision metadata, except ...

Re: DONT burn subtitles?

Versions prior to v1.3 did not enforce the container limitations within the GUI, so you could make "impossible" selections. In 1.3.x, the GUI won't allow you to select passthrough for PGS in MP4 files (the burn-in box is grayed out). (1.3.3 is the current version, by the way, and 1.1.x is ...

Re: trying to get True-HD atmos to work

Handbrake is passing the TrueHD track to the output (along with the AC3 version MakeMKV created).

Check your TV's settings - If it is like mine, the default is to send PCM to the amplifier for streams it recognizes.

Re: DONT burn subtitles?

Expanding on mduell's comment - Bluray subtitles are not compatible with MP4 as a destination. DVD subtitles (officially) aren't either, but there is a widely (but not universally accepted) way to include them. MKV files can have PGS subtitles, so switching containers would make it possible to have ...

If you are dealing with things like "10 episodes of TV series XYZZY", which have tracks of the same type and will have the same encoding,I prefer using the command line.

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?

Motion is smoother, in my experience, by going to the "Bob rate". When things are moving, their position in the frame can change between half frames, and double-rate doesn't have to try to blend the two together. But that's just my opinion on it, and I have all my DVD presets using that.

Re: Audio settings don't get saved when saving a customized preset

Presets save audio selection rules set in the "Defaults" box, not specific settings. You cannot say, "Pick track 4 and encode it as AAC 5.1", and expect that to "stick" for all videos processed. Sources are far too diverse and the selection rules are rather simplistic.

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?

Interlaced 25fps is actually two half-frames for each frame, so splitting them up gives you 50fps.

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?

On the filters page, you have a number of possible selections relating to telecine and interlacing. Look for "Interlace detection", and set it to OFF. That will force the interlace removal to be applied to all frames. After that, you can select which deinterlace filter to use. I use "...

Re: CLI arguments from the GUI?

Side note - when writing the scripts, it is best to wrap file paths in quote characters, because sometimes they will be mis-interpreted. Using GUI presets in the CLI involves two steps; loading the presets, then selecting the one you want. --preset-import-gui will import presets from GUI config pres...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?

The output is not going to be (handbrake doesn't output interlaced video). So you can often see combing (those bands you mentioned) in the result. The parameter you probably want to disable is "Comb detection", which tells handbrake to only apply deinterlacing "when needed", whil...

Re: CLI arguments from the GUI?

The GUI hasn't been a "CLI front end" for a LONG time. If you grab one of the old 0.10.x versions from the archives, it will LOG the command line arguments necessary to match what you've selected, but it doesn't actually use the CLI to do it. The 1.x series removed that, but it also added ...

Re: Operational priority for multiple queue items

Handbrake will go through the queue in the order the tasks are listed. You can move them within the queue using the queue manager. The latest nightly build on Windows can run multiple jobs at the same time, if you have enough CPU resources. If you have fewer than 12 cores, it probably isn't going to...

Re: Output as filesize?

That option was removed about a decade ago, because it didn't work very well. You will still find websites and youtube videos that sing its praises. Targeting 800MB regardless of original size, you're giving up quite a bit of quality. Have you tried just limiting the output display size to 640x240, ...

Re: Can't get passthrough to work

PCM audio is not passed through by handbrake. DTS and DTS-HD MA can be passed through unchanged, if you have enabled it, but you do not have any auto-pass through audio types defined. That means all tracks will be encoded using the default encoder set, which is AAC 2-channel for compatibility. What ...

Have you tried copying the DVD to a directory on your hard drive, to see if there are unreadable files? From your description, there isn't any encryption involved, so a straight copy should work.

Handbrake can't fix unreadable files.

Re: HandBrake taking 76 hours to encode REMUX to x265

On anime, x264 can shrink Bluray data by 85% or more at an RF value of 20, because it is very compressible. A high-motion, high-detail action film at that same RF... Not so much, more like 50%. Lossy compression always creates some artifacts. People authoring disks usually seem to use a compression ...

Re: HandBrake taking 76 hours to encode REMUX to x265

For your proposed new machine - don't skimp on the CPU or case cooling. Get the heat away from the chips. Apple spends a LOT of time designing the heat rejection in their tightly-enclosed machines, as do other major manufacturers, but a "mini tower" case has lots of room for big heat sinks...

Re: HandBrake taking 76 hours to encode REMUX to x265

Just remember that encoding is not a task that needs a lot of user interaction, after things are set up, so if you're targeting an "encoding machine", you do not have to limit yourself to Apple hardware. The encoding capabilities of handbrake are the same, regardless of the operating syste...
