Re: Corrupt Audio/Video when ripping DVD using Handbrake AND VLC!

The "How-To Geek" article is from 2017. The "LifeHacker" article is from 2015. The method they suggest has been unsupported in handbrake since 2009. Why? Because it doesn't "fix' DVD ripping completely, and the handbrake programmers have zero control over why it doesn't. Even installing an operating...

Re: Audio Codec Suggestions

When you're asking for specific suggestions on what to change to achieve certain results, that pretty much defines a "support request", not to mention it is VERY difficult to suggest a change without knowing what was done before, and why it wasn't acceptable. Generally speaking, dropping the idea of...

Re: Silent switches to supress the check for updates

You want a checkbox to suppress something you have to enter the Tools->Preferences->Updates menu, then click on a button to do?

Why not just avoid clicking the button?

Re: ripping video commentary?

Theory says it COULD be a subtitle, but apparently not. The Star Trek original series "remastered" BDs use a subtitle track to display images/text with trivia, but they don't move and don't have their own sound track. The person over on makemkv.com discovered the java that did the overlay, and wasn'...

Re: ripping video commentary?

The Picture-In-Picture is often done as a Java program, pulling the commentary from a different file and overlaying it on the main video. One of the users over on makemkv.com analyzed it on several disks, trying to find a way to get the video in a workable form. To put it in an MKV or MP4 file would...

Re: TIVO file is process, but play be is garbled and not sound or image

What mduell said. Your TiVo media key is listed in the setup screen. You'll need it with tivodecode to get a stream that handbrake can handle. Be aware though that Tivo does some aggressive encoding of its own; most quality-oriented handbrake presets won't reduce the size much, and sometimes it gets...

Re: Glitchy download

You have to remove the encryption on the DVD first. You do not have the unsupported 3rd-party library installed to do that, which is why it is best to actually rip disks with ripping software first, like MakeMKV for example. They will remove the encryption, which will show up as "glitches" in the vi...

Re: Tips Using HandBrake to Convert MOV to H265?

Logs tell us what settings you ACTUALLY used (not just what you "remember" using). Logs tell us what handbrake saw when it opened your source.

In other words, logs tell us what happened, rather than what you read in Wikipedia.

Re: Reducing video file size without losing much image quality

Our suggestions are mostly irrelevant, simply because we don't know what is "unacceptable" to you. You're already running a video you downloaded from an unknown source, which usually means it's been compressed pretty badly already. But, as mentioned before, slower encoder presets take fewer "short c...

Re: Reducing video file size without losing much image quality

Taking you at your word, "the smallest file size with the maximum video quality", do not bother compressing it at all. The maximum video quality you can have is the source, and encoding it with lossy encoders is not going to maintain quality. The question is, how much loss of quality are you willing...

Re: Automatic convertion of subtitles

For maximum capability, SSA subtitles should include any special fonts in the MKV file. Otherwise, they'll use the "closest installed" font style.

MP4 files are going to end up with "Timed Text" for the subtitle format.

Re: why is Apple TV not a preset anymore?

Handbrake has not had official support for ripping DVDs for 11+ years now. The old way (installing a DLL file from videolan.org) works after a fashion, but it is unreliable; it does not support newer copy protection schemes. The log shows that it's not currently configured to work: libdvdread: Encry...

Re: why is Apple TV not a preset anymore?

Handbrake does not do ripping-from-DVD unless you add a (non-supported) 3rd-party library. If you have updated anything on your system since you last installed the add-on, it's probably broken. There are tools intended for ripping, like MakeMKV. After you rip the disk to MKV files, you can endlessly...

Re: Automatic convertion of subtitles

Pass through could work for MKV files, but not for MP4. But SRT is a really limited format, dependent on settings in the playback environment for proper rendering. I gave up on pass-through SRT when I found that I had to reconfigure my player for things like font color and size for EVERY movie, beca...

Re: Auto cropping crops too much

For these extras, manual cropping with zero values is the only appropriate crop, because they keep jumping back and forth between the rendered movie and "other footage". The movie itself is rendered at a consistent aspect ratio, so automatic cropping would work, but extras are, well, extras, and the...

The frame rate in the file is lying. The bit rate is WAY too low for that frame rate.
[02:21:25] sync: got 204674 frames, 3613358 expected
Handbrake estimated the time based on expecting 3,613,358 frames (because of incorrect frame rate), but only found 204,674 frames in the file itself.

Re: Auto cropping crops too much

Anything that is automatic can be fooled. A car with "lane following" can be fooled into driving right into a concrete barrier when a lane splits, by trying to keep you in the center of the expanding lane, and an algorithm to look for black bars for cropping can be fooled by films that change aspect...

Re: HandBrake 1.3.1 discussion thread

Quick note on "perceived bugs" - the graphic user interfaces are actually not allowing you to select things that earlier versions would "silently change". Where this will be most noticed is with MP4 files, where you won't be able to put a second PGS subtitle track in, or certain audio codecs can't b...

Re: Subtitles have shadows when using Burn In

You're comparing renders, not "original format", because SRT subtitles do not have font selection. The "original format" in the VOB you downloaded was probably standard DVD VOBSUB graphics, where the font size, color, and position were selected by the disk authors. SRT can be rendered however the pl...

Re: Convert 60 FPS to 30 FPS

The jerky motion is because you're removing every other frame.

What happens if you encode with x264 at 60fps? The bandwidth will be higher than HEVC, but the processor load is less. It will test if it's a bandwidth issue or decoder issue.

Re: How do I import all audio and subtitles automatically with the same seetings as the original source?

With no ability to see what you're doing, it is hard to say how to fix it. That is why we need logs. Not all audio codecs or subtitle types are acceptable in particular containers. If you are trying to write to MP4 files, you are particularly limited. MKV files can accept more types. Some source aud...
