Re: some new materials won't read

Handbrake isn't reading the disk because the disk is encrypted. Well, it reads it, but there are errors caused both by the encryption and problems with the physical read. MakeMKV can handle encryption, but it cannot handle problems with reading the media itself. As for running handbrake on the lapto...

Re: some new materials won't read

The problem is that we do not know what errors you are seeing. Handbrake itself is NOT intended to be reading encrypted disks directly, so it does not have a lot of diagnostics for read errors. If by "MKV" you mean the program MakeMKV, on their forum they have a topic that covers common read problem...

Re: some new materials won't read

Without information on errors, it's hard to make guesses. If both MakeMKV and handbrake say "no disk", that usually means the operating system thinks there is no disk. You will see this when you put a UHD Bluray in a "regular" Bluray drive, or a BD in a DVD drive. You can also see it when the drive ...

Re: When did Libdvdcss.dll become unusable

Use of 3rd-party libraries for decryption has not been supported since, well, as long as I've been on this forum. In part because it is so fragile and the library isn't part of the handbrake project, so the authors have no control over it. If you want support for it, ask the 3rd party that supplies ...

Re: Defaults vs Custom

Youtube/Vimeo is optimized for what those services want to see as an upload, not for best playback on a particular device. Unless your intention is to shrink the video to make it a more reasonable size for upload, you should ignore those presets for now. Pick the preset that best matches what you're...

Re: Dual CPU Hardware, Ryzen 5 2600, i5 8400/8500

The core count is the important part. If you have more than 12 cores, you can run a second encoding task without massively slowing the first one. The "sweet spot" for cores/encode varies between 8 and 12, depending on the source and destination parameters. And it really doesn't make a lot of differe...

Re: Web optimized?

Yes, if you want knowledgeable answers to "why", we need to know "what". You don't remember changing anything... The logs DO remember. Since you're working with different sources (an mpeg2 version of the file and a h.264 version), a LOT has changed between encodes. The test would be to run the same ...

Re: Fast Decode option is not remembered in saved Presets

I just ran a test with v1.1.2, and created two presets. I started with the default preset, and copied it to "test1". Then I checked "Fast Decode", and saved the current settings as "test2". Looking at the exported JSON for each, test1 contains this line: "VideoTune": "", while test2 has that replace...

Re: Defaults vs Custom

Handbrake does not auto-select a preset. Fast 1080p30 just happens to be a good one for most people to start with. Choice of preset depends more on your target than the source. "Sharpening" does not make your video better - it simply increases the contrast for edges. Despite what they show on CSI an...

Are you saving the modified preset after you change the option?

Modifications are not saved automatically, by design.

Re: Suspiciously small file sizes with h.265

Both Bluray and UHD disks are compressed "enough" to fit their respective media. When you have the space, it really doesn't pay to compress more than necessary to fit in that space. If the disk author needed to fit a 4 hour film on a UHD disk, they could chose to use a far more aggressive, slower co...

Re: NO Audio when compressing from a .MOV to .MP4

Without the logs, any response would be a wild guess, and probably incorrect. We need to see what handbrake saw in your source, and what settings you used in the conversion. Also, it would be good to know what playback software you were using that didn't see an audio track.

Re: Fixing a DVD-R that has audio out of sync

It is always better to start with the original than try to fix an already-processed copy. Handbrake does not have the ability to apply an offset to an audio stream. In most cases, if it comes out out of sync, there was an issue on the source side. This is where using a video editor comes into play, ...

Re: dvd exact copy, but smaller

For the most part, though, people who rip disks do it because they don't LIKE dealing with the menus - "I want to play movie X, NOW!" Menus are not efficient in that environment. Menus are for dealing with a limited interface environment (DVD remote), rather than something more advanced.

Re: Fixing a DVD-R that has audio out of sync

Are you certain that the audio is actually out of sync, and not just a problem with your player?

Handbrake has adjustments for (some) subtitle timing. Audio, though, should best be done with an editor.

Re: dvd exact copy, but smaller

Also, "Exact copy except smaller" is the kind of request a pointy-haired boss would ask for... If it's smaller, it isn't an exact copy. :)

And if you "need" it be DVD-compatible, you won't be able to take advantage of the better compression that's come out since DVDs were defined.

Do not install handbrake from the official ubuntu repository. It is deliberately broken.

Install it from the official handbrake Linux repository, and it will work like official handbrake is supposed to. Links here: https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Mojave, like updates before it, changed the rules on some permissions. A quick search on "mac os automator fails on mojave" comes up with articles like https://bitsplitting.org/2018/07/11/rea ... in-mojave/ explaining how to make scripts work again.
