With upcoming changes to data protection and privacy laws in Europe coming into effect soon, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we do have a privacy policy.
This applies to all users and visitors world-wide.

We have made a few changes to the language to make it clearer in relation to this new regulation but fundamentally, the terms and your rights are unchanged.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to ask in the General Forum

Re: QSV: not enough to have 8 surface(s) allocated

"Up to date" according to whom?

A lot of manufacturers settle for very old versions of drivers, while Intel has moved on. And Windows itself uses the latest version that Microsoft thinks is "latest". It is necessary to go to Intel's site to check for the "latest" that works with your chipset.

Re: No Valid Source Found

The add-on is part of the VideoLan VLC project, most likely. You have to copy a dynamic library into a specific location, and hope that the next MacOS update doesn't break the connection AGAIN. That happens regularly, based on the number of "I can't rip DVDs since I updated to MacOS Dancing Bobcat 1...

Re: No Valid Source Found

Reason for the difference: One machine has a third-party add-on installed to remove the encryption from most DVDs, and the other does not. There is no support here for the third-party add-on. Using actual ripping software that deals with encryption and other copy protection methods, like the previou...

What are your settings on Tools->Preferences->Output Files for Automatic File Naming?

If you haven't set that up, batch-add will not work well, if at all.

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
Handbrake is not intended for ripping copy-protected media.

What happens if you use ripping software, such as MakeMKV or AnyDVD, to produce an unencrypted video file?

Re: How to resize multiple individual videos at once to same size?

To do what you ask will require the use of the command line interface, because the GUI will not arbitrarily increase the size of a video, only shrink to a maximum size. If you are ALWAYS shrinking the video to a smaller size, you can save the smaller size as a constraint in a preset, and it should d...

Re: 1280 vs 720

Suggestion: Encode a movie each way, and play it on the device. Which looks better? Is the smaller one acceptable quality?

The more closely you match the device's native resolution, the better things will appear, GENERALLY. But that isn't guaranteed....

Re: Handbreak Automatic Cropping

Handbrake chooses 10 (or more, if asked) frames in the video, and looks for what its rules say are letterbox bars. It then calculates the "average" amount it can cut off and not remove content. It isn't perfect, but it works much of the time. And it can miss when movies insert subtitles and other su...

Re: perm subtitles

The default behaviour for VLC is to play the first subtitle track for your chosen language, or the first found if you have not specified a preferred language. I've experimented a bit with the default flag, and I don't remember VLC paying attention to it... But that was a couple of years ago, and Vid...

Re: All audio tracks show up in players as "English" but not actual format

You are quick to decry a problem, want it fixed, but refuse to give the information necessary to figure out why it happened.

For all we know, you could be dealing with an imported disk from Malaysia where every track is marked as "English", including the ones in Mandarin and Maylai...

Re: Creating My Output File

That depends upon whether or not your source file is in an appropriately-named folder. If it is, you can use: Tools->Preferences->Output Files , Automatic File Naming , and include {source_folder_name} in the default path. If not, you're stuck with manually adding the folder name to the output path.

Re: perm subtitles

Check "Burn in" for the subtitle you want burned in, on the Subtitles page. You can only burn in one subtitle. You can TRY setting the "default" flag instead, but not many playback devices and programs use that flag. A lot of players WILL play the first subtitle track found in the file automatically...

Re: How long is safe to run Handbrake? [CPU goes nuts while encoding]

Adequate cooling is key. It is possible to run 100% continuously and keep temperatures under 60C... it just takes a really good CPU cooler, and getting the hot air away from the cooler. If you're using the "stock" manufacturer's cooler, getting hot air out of the case is especially important.

Re: HandBrake 1.1.0 Discussion Thread

But, there are a lot of edge cases that any attempt to "fix" the GUI are still going to fail to address, but "edit a file" still works as a fall back. And as for "fix the preset, and chose add all to queue", the example I gave would fail that. Those 366 episodes vary from having 1 to 6 episodes per ...

Re: HandBrake 1.1.0 Discussion Thread

There is more than two possibilities for desiring the ability to export AND import a queue. Especially if you're experimenting. If you want to break it down to just two options, then the "deficiency in the GUI" is having a way to easily bulk-change a queue that you made an error while creating. As a...

It's not a clickable setting. You would add it to the "Extra Options" box on the Video tab.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm remembering "threads=N" (where N is the number of threads to limit to) is the option.

Re: To rip first or not

The advantage of a separate ripper is that programs intended for ripping make changes as new copy protection mechanisms come out, and handbrake can use the resources that would be needed for that rat race to improve the supported functionality of the program, i.e., the encoding of video. As for "is ...
