Re: Handbrake crashes after a few minutes of running task.

If you have MakeMKV write the titles to MKV files, and try processing those, does it also crash?

Re: Want to Batch encode 28 video files

My advise would be to start with the closest preset to what you need, and save it under a new name. Make any changes to things like interlacing and such, using one of the files as a test (you do NOT have to encode the whole thing to test changes!), and save the changes to your new preset. The CLI co...

Re: Best settings for top quality DVD - MP4 conversions

First, start with a current version of handbrake, then use the "Super HQ 480p30 Surround" preset.

Post a log if you want further recommendations.

Re: Want to Batch encode 28 video files

You can create presets in the graphic user interface (GUI) and use those for the command line interface (CLI). The "problem" with doing batch adds in the GUI is that audio and subtitle selection is not the most flexible thing in the program. You can't easily say, "Always take the first audio track a...

Re: Want to Batch encode 28 video files

OK, changing the rules. So, now you want 1 audio and 1 subtitle stream. -a 1 -E av_aac -B 96 -6 mono --subtitle 4 I'd suggest executing handbrakecli with the --help parameter, and direct the output to a file that you can review. Pretty much every setting available in your current version of the CLI ...

Re: Can Handbrake rip DVDs to a directory format?

Kodi allows you to change languages and subtitles on MKV files. Extras and be saved as separate file, for the most part. The interface is different. If you had never seen a DVD menu, you might not view it in a positive light compared to Kodi. Do you watch the extras often? Often enough to permanentl...

Re: Want to Batch encode 28 video files

Your source has 3 audio tracks, you say you want 5 output. That means that 1 or more of the audio tracks is used multiple times. The settings to do that vary wildly, depending on your choices. You have two different audio formats involved (DTS and DTS HD MA), both of which can be passed through, but...

Re: Can Handbrake rip DVDs to a directory format?

To do a DVD "just like a DVD" requires something that will create an ISO file. Such programs rarely do any compression, although there are a few commercial ones that say they will. And most do not even offer to decrypt the video for you. One of the problems is that "just like a DVD" also means DVD-l...

Re: Want to Batch encode 28 video files

Having the actual activity log from one encode would help a lot, since then we could see what the actual structure of the input is. You describe it, but which tracks are which? Need the activity log to see how handbrake saw it.

Re: Question on audio transcoding quality

Using AAC encoding with handbrake, on anything but a Mac, is going to give you degraded quality, unless you compile your own copy with the better AAC encoder. (Version 1.2, when it arrives, may improve that, but that's not now.) I try to make sure all videos I encode have at least one AC3 track, pre...

Re: Question on audio transcoding quality

You CAN put more than one audio track in. Put in AC3 for the TV, DTS pass through for the computer.

Many TVs have a way to send the audio out to an amplifier that understands the encoding.

Re: Tweak encoding settings for best quality and compression

If those settings are meeting your goal, what is the issue?

Regardless of the source resolution, with the destination being limited to 1920x1080, "Blu-ray quality" would be obtainable with an RF value of 16 to 18. Using 13 may not be silly, but, given the targets, unnecessary.

One would think that anyone running one of these applications is doing so deliberately, and they would know how to operate it. Re: Encode MP4 from separate audio and video files

Best solution would be a video editor, then feed the output to handbrake. Cheap/fast solution, assuming that the audio and video are matching lengths and there is no requirement to synchronize them, mkvmerge (part of mkvtoolnix) to multiplex them into an MKV file, then convert them to an MP4 using h...

Considering that Youtube and Vimeo both recompress your video/audio in multiple ways between when you upload it and it is made available for download, "fast decode" means nothing on the submission side.

Re: HB scan not providing content

You have probably been using an unsupported 3rd-party library to graft decryption on to handbrake. During your update, the linkage to that library was lost. This happens quite often, which is why the 3rd-party library approach to decryption isn't supported. Using a tool that is intended for ripping ...

Re: CLI not completing, but says it is.

Did you try playing the m4v file? I've read that Finder has one of the same "features" as Windows Explorer, that it caches file information in weird ways. It notices that a file has been created, but it sometimes does not update that information willingly as the file changes size. File size can chan...

Experiment (adult word for "play"). Pick a chapter of an episode. Encode it using different presets, recording which preset you used for which file. Try different RF values. Watch the resulting files back to back, to see if you detect the changes. And if you have questions, post logs so we know EXAC...

Re: Titles are scanned, but then do not show up

There are programs out there that handle decrypting DVDs and Bluray disks. Handbrake isn't one of them. You apparently added a third-party add-on (libdvdcss) to your old version that removed the encryption, but that library was apparently NOT working on this particular disk... which is why you broug...

Re: how to passtrough subtitle and keep in srt instead of converting to ass

SRT is a poorly documented format. SSA actually has documentation. From messages posted here by the developers over the years, it was apparently decided to standardize on a DOCUMENTED format, instead of a format that, if it works, you're good, but if it doesn't, you probably can't figure out what yo...

Re: Custom preset - resolution not saved

The resolution in the preset will be the maximum size. If the source is smaller than that, you should see no changes.

We would need to see the preset itself to know if the resolution was saved (that is optional when you create the preset). Export it and post the json output, please.

Re: [suggest].ass compability

SSA/ASS is supported by handbrake, but it must be muxed into the source MKV file. Unlike SRT subtitles, SSA can (and usually does!) support fonts and such that must be included with the subtitles. You can use mkvmerge to insert the SSA/ASS file and its associated fonts into the source, and run it th...
