Re: No Subtitles on mp4s I created with Hankbrake

To create an MKV file instead of an MP4, select MKV from the Format: pulldown on the summary page. That will open up the options as far as audio and subtitle codecs that can be included. The downside is that not all playback software and devices support MKV files. You cannot play them on Apple devic...

Re: No Subtitles on mp4s I created with Hankbrake

PGS subtitles cannot be put into an MP4 file; They can only be burned in.

If you want switchable subtitles, you'll have to output MKV files.

Your audio is pcm_s16le, which is not a supported pass-through codec; it was converted to the fallback codec for your installation (AC3).

Re: Apple Preset Difference - Only File Size?

"Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" uses HEVC (h.265) encoding, instead of h.264 encoding.

Not seeing a difference is a good outcome.

Re: 4K IMAX

When you're testing settings, there is no real need to encode an entire video; pick a section that has what you think are the "most important" attributes, and use that section for your tests. View the results. Good or bad, you don't have to wait a day to see what is going on.

Re: Crashing when encoding with x265

The only thing that stands out to me is the audio source... [03:06:40] * audio track 1 [03:06:40] + decoder: Unknown (wmapro) (2.0 ch) (256 kbps) (track 1, id 0x0) [03:06:40] + bitrate: 256 kbps, samplerate: 44100 Hz I know it's not a solution, but... If you deselect the audio, does the encode finish?

Re: Converting a 3d movie to 2d

That will normally happen if you try to encode a "3D" file, because the "3D" portion of it will be ignored by handbrake.

Most likely, it will not be as "clean" as a separate 2D version, because there are compromises to the "base" portion of the video to allow the 3D to work.

Re: Only records the first 20 minutes

Also, are you sure DVD Decrypter actually read more than the first 20 minutes? If you're still using that program, it is a minimum of 14 years out of date (taken off-line in 2005).

There are modern, supported, rippers out there.

Re: Crashing when encoding with x265

Since it has to do with x265, same topic is fine.

If you change the encoder to x264 (no other changes), do you still get the crash? Are there any errors reported in the Windows Event log about the encode?

We need to pin down whether it's the source (the WMV) or x265 itself.

Test it with the nightly build; there was an issue with x265 crashing in certain conditions that was resolved last moth.

"Forced only, burn in" will ONLY work if the subtitle stream has images that are flagged as forced. Try removing the "Forced only" restriction.

Having the encode log will help here. There are several things mentioned on your link, like forcing CFR, that might not be happening. But, only the logs will tell us that.

Re: encoder tune" in video tab!!

Tunes are only needed if you have special circumstances, like for higher-than-normal motion, or to preserve grain in old movies, etc.

Setting a tune value can improve one characteristic, but usually at the cost of making another aspect worse. "None" is a good compromise for most usage.

Re: Windows: START AFFINITY not working with Handbrake CLI v.1.2.2

Handbrake normally tells the operating system to assign it a low priority, which helps with latency for foreground tasks. If you leave it running in the foreground (selected window), the operating system thinks you want it to have a higher priority.

What did you use to remove the encryption from the DVD? It does not appear that libdvdcss is involved.

What happens if you use actual ripping software, like MakeMKV, to get the video off the disk?

"Compatibility". While a stereo decoder is supposed to be capable of reading a higher-level track, it doesn't always work that way. If your players have no issue with it, though, you don't have to worry about having separate tracks. The ripping program MakeMKV has been defaulted to separately writin...

The ability to open/read the folder structure doesn't help if that structure defines 4 separate episodes, and the goal is one 4-episode file, though. You still need to combine the files.

Handbrake cannot do what you're asking for. There are other tools that can do it; the ffmpeg command line, for example, or mkvtoolnix (assuming you ripped to MKV files first).
