Re: If I were mad what would be the best x264 option string?
All other settings are about techniques to improve the quality-filesize tradeoff . if it's generally accepted that at ~62 you get visual transparency on SD sources, if someone had a slower system with a little extra hard drive space why couldn't they accept a little bloat and speed up encoding SIGN...

Re: If I were mad what would be the best x264 option string?
In principle, quality 62 is quality 62, and any other settings make no visible difference. In practice, apparently it makes some small difference. However, I suspect that, for example, 62 plus any quality-improving tweaks is probably visually no better than, say, 70 with no quality-improving tweaks....

Re: If I were mad what would be the best x264 option string?
If you're only interested in maximum quality, set quality to 100. All other settings are about techniques to improve the quality-filesize tradeoff. The file size will be horrendous, but the quality will be maximal.

Re: New GUI Layout Idea
For what it's worth, I think it's got some potential. I don't think the layout you've chosen would work, because there are too many possible settings to make it practical. But being queue-oriented and pre-loading all the titles into the queue could be done. In the area where you now select the title...

Re: Freeware or Shareware ripper?
There are alternatives, like RipIt4Me and DVD43, but they lag way behind AnyDVD in terms of ripping capabilities and dealing with advanced copy protection. You are correct about DVD43, but I think you're wrong about RipIt4Me. Do you know of a title it won't work for? RipIt4Me works in conjunction w...

Re: Newbie Question about kmp
If the encode was done with chapter markers enabled, and KMP doesn't like chapter markers, a re-encode without them might be in order.

Re: Will not read DVD's
Handbrake is probably having issues with the authoring of the disks. In particular, those created with iDVD have been a known problem. New versions of HB are (from what I read) getting more robust about that sort of thing. In the meantime, try a reauthoring tool like DVDShrink. Put the desired title...

Re: Handbrake not detecting all Titles
What are you doing to deal with copy protection?
You should be able to type the title number into the dropdown box, even if it's not a title that's available in the list.

Re: Large(r) black bars when encoding on Macbook
If the image fills the screen horizontally and the image isn't distorted, then the black bars are the correct height. If you have space on all four sides, then you probably forgot to crop.

Don't keep the entire image, just set the bottom crop to zero. The others won't buy you any real estate for your subtitles.

Re: Post Your "Best Settings" here and Why.
From what Ive read, CRF (Constant Rate Factor) overrides the CQ setting. Setting the CQ to 50 or 100 makes no difference if you have CRF selected. Is that true? The quality slider is input for either setting. CRF gives the system a little more freedom to adjust the quantization matrix to keep the v...

Re: Post Your "Best Settings" here and Why.
Looking for some specific feedback regarding quality settings. Im curious about the difference between 1500, 2500, or maybe even CQR 70. For my scenario, what would be the lowest bitrate/cqr I could use w/o noticeable quality loss? Play with it and see. You probably want to use CRF, rather than a b...

For the iPhone, just use the preset. Anything else and you're probably either going to make it worse or break it.unions8 wrote: I've tried to obtain the right balance between quality and reasonable size (who doesn't ) for iPhone.

What I do is set the cropping for the bottom of the frame to zero, and all the other crop sides are as autocrop suggests. Then I have some space at the bottom, and the subtitles show up a bit lower.

It works either way. You just have to tell the GUI whether you're browsing for a file or a directory.

Re: Target Size Problems
CRF - We don't care about bitrate/filesize, we just care about consistent visual quality (not appropriate for iPod 5G/5.5G) I've been curious about what happens if you do choose CRF and have the vbv. What I would expect is that you'd get the CRF you asked for, except when it had to be clipped. In m...
