Re: HandBrake 0.10.0 Discussion Thread

Setup has erased my personal presets... quite a loss!
Before removing the old version completely, the installer should allow (or warn) to keep your presets!

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

Right, I'm sorry... only haven't got any -- for if any such rare case occurs I tend to opt for Vidcoder, HB's sister project, where any video dimensions are allowed. (Downside is encoding times are longer, no idea why...)
So it's, come on HB, face the music and ketchup with the latest ! ;-)

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

To tell by the number of videos encoded, over 800 using HB in the last 2 years, my hands should be pitch black... ;-) But kidding aside, I usually get all desired results without anamorphic enabled... For a few badly AR'ed sources however (often old TV recs), I insist that HB should allow free chang...

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

For that, I use anamorphic=none and set the square pixel display dimensions accordingly. So do I, so do I ;-) ......... Referring back to above, shall we then rephrase my initial post by saying " HB should support more TVs without anamorphic capabilities (home video only)" and "added...

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

@ musicvid - I found "pillars" in HB Guide's "Hard Letterboxing Appendix" (so there, but nothing I ever wanted to do, or watch... ;-). I seem to miss a section on "Custom Anamorphic" on that same page though... Perhaps the right option for me, with height fully preserve...

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

Some replies still misunderstood that I mean to up- or downscale, but I don't. I always try to maintain the original height of a video source (minus cropping of course, eg. black borders in widescreen recs), no more or less! @ musicvid -- I do know those options (except for "pillar box", o...

Re: HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

@ musicvid -- I don't think you understood my point, but perhaps I made it too confusing... Cropping was clearly not involved in my example, I was all about width not height in the first place... @ rodeo -- I usually leave "Anamorphic" set to "None", but perhaps I should try &quo...

HB should not lock width at free aspect ratios

(This might be a "remove" rather than "add feature" request... ;-) Problem: When I disable the checkbox "Keep Aspect "Ratio", HB resets the width value to 720 px. This can be a disadvantage when a higher width is needed for sources without anamorphic ratio correcti...

Re: Motion blur in re-encoded AVC sources

TSDoctor mentioned above is about 30 Euros. I'm not sure if that's something that might cost you dearly or not... Yep, I had seen that too, and would prefer that to VideoRedo, price-wise... ;-) But by saying 'cost me' I was also thinking of the extra time spent running yet another process in order ...

Re: Motion blur in re-encoded AVC sources

You can force all the i-frames you want with keyint and it won't change a thing in your source. I see, thanks for this addition. Should the "keyint" string you suggest be a H.264 parameter... ignorant as I am, how to use that in HB? Just put the command in the Video tab's "Extra Opti...

Re: Motion blur in re-encoded AVC sources

Thank you, I did understand him, but wonder what should be wrong with the recordings... (and how you can tell)? Does it say so in the code I posted, or is 'a faulty source' the only possible cause for dropped frames? Many more questions, I'm sorry... ;-) You may be right however, for I now remembere...

Re: Motion blur in re-encoded AVC sources

Thanks but I had rather try a solution in Handbrake first... Here are some more details I didn't mention about the recorded files: The PCTV device software (called 'TVCenter') can record digital satellite TV, both in SD and HD, without re-encoding by directly writing the stream to a file with the ex...

Motion blur in re-encoded AVC sources

I would like to re-encode some AVC encoded videos -- mostly 1280x720p TV recordings using 'PCTV's satellite receiver USB stick software -- in order to reduce their file sizes, e.g. from 10 GB to about 2-3GB. First attempts encoding to H264 yielded the desired file size and were 'watchable', but outp...

Thank you guys. If indeed I have a NTSC/PAL problem, what to do?
To have these videos run at PAL speed, can I convert them some way?
Still need help!!

Playback speed too slow

Hello, I have a problem with H264 videos playing at too slow speed. The issue becomes apparent by too low actors' voices, or music being "out of key" (as it would sound when played a bit too slowly). Playing the same videos in a player with adjustable playback speed, e.g. "MPlayer&quo...

Re: Regarding encoding times

You would be well right. However, the reason why I'm not using anamorphic is my TV (LG 1920x1080), that just won't display "soft" coded aspect ratios, it only recognizes "hard" stored dimensions. A standard DVD transcoded and stored at 720x576 will display squeezed instead of ful...

Re: Regarding encoding times

Yes - if I were interested in smaller files, which I'm not! I still believe in this simple equation: larger fie = more video data = more to see. I always strive to preserve the maximum a source can provide. If my (DVD) source has 4 GB, compressing it to less than 2 GB loses data, especially when the...

Re: Regarding encoding times

The quality slider will not change any x264 advanced settings. Thanks, but then what could have make these values change if I didn't? It looks like your "longer" encode was using the defaults, whereas for the "normal" encode you used the Normal Preset. Not sure what's the differ...

Re: Regarding encoding times

Indeed, I hadn't considered that source quality would affect encoding speed - while it's quite obvious that no two DVDs have the same quality (though I would expect old/new sources to differ more than eg. two DVDs roughly the same age)... Have now installed the latest version, and it seems it addres...
