Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

RF 18 on slow ended up being slightly more than 28 hours rather than the estimated 19+ at the start of the encode. Output file was 9.9GB, so roughly 20 hours more to save 1.5 GB in file size. Meh. The quality scale isn't the same across different speed presets. Pick your preset first, then find you...

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

That roughly follows the rules of thumb: - 2x (or 0.5x) the time for each slower (or faster) encoder preset - 6 points on RF to double or halve the size of the video track RF 18 on slow ended up being slightly more than 28 hours rather than the estimated 19+ at the start of the encode. Output file ...

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

just sharing for anyone who searches these threads..... I tested (or started a test) of Greatest Showman 4k rip, using TrueHD passthru, and turned off deinterlace. Otherwise I kept the h265 10-bit settings as default. Rip was 47.5 GB. CPU is Intel i7-8700 @ 3.20ghz (stock) - RF20 medium took 7 hours...

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

Best quality at the smallest file sizes was always my goal. If you really mean what you say, you should be using veryslow in both cases. You are 110% right. I need to move the slider over. Its been so long since I played with my presets, I forgot that I still had room to slow down. It wasn't until ...

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

I don't think changing from "slow" to "medium" is going to make a meaningful difference here. The "medium" x265 preset could be about twice as fast as "slow", sometimes a bit more than that. The x265 "fast" preset should be 3 times faster than "slow", at least, and in some cases, up to four times t...

Now there may be some interlaced Blu-ray content, but 4K sources are highly unlikely to be. Drop the decomb filter, it's gotta be slowing you down significantly.
thank you so much for the tip. I'm sure that will help a ton regardless of which machine I'm working on.

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

For Ubuntu, you should use the "flatpak" distribution, available from the official handbrake downloads. The version that Ubuntu distributes is deliberately crippled by them. Is there a flatpak available for the nightlies? I don't recall seeing one, but I wasn't looking terribly closely. Or can I mo...

Re: Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

I should add, though, that the first 30 mins of the encode (which took nearly 24 hours) does look outstanding.

Another "why is h265 so slow" posts

Trying to figure out if my CPU is just in over its head for any type of h265 encoding. Was hoping to save some space on my NAS. Testing with a rip of Greatest Showman 4k in an Intel i5-3570 with 16GB of RAM. I'm getting FPS: 000.3 Avg FPS: 000.5 23:09:50 elapsed, 16:13:09 remaining. Should I just wa...

Downmixing from Atmos - maintain Atmos metadata?

Description of problem or question: Recently picked up an Roku Ultra, which can support Atmos, but only with Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3). When I transcode an Atmos title from TrueHD, I don't see a way to maintain / extract the Atmos metadata to apply to the E-AC3 track. I don't believe (could be wro...

Re: Start with DTS-MA or DTS when Mixing Down to Stereo AAC?

DTS-MA is a DTS track that has information in it to correct the lossy audio back to lossless. In actuality, the two are usually "one track" on a BD, and players that do not understand "MA" just ignore that data, and play the "lossy core". - Indeed it is. I probably should have asked TrueHD vs AC3. ...

Start with DTS-MA or DTS when Mixing Down to Stereo AAC?

Description of problem or question: When converting my blurays for watching on my tablet, is it better to mix down to stereo from the DTS-MA or should I use the DTS for my source audio? I realized that DTS-MA is superior to DTS, but if its being mixed down to 320kbs stereo AAC, I would guess there'...

Re: Particularly slow enode

The 5 hours wasn't surprising. But out of nowhere, this particular title jumped to 10. I didn't think the film looked particularly grainy when I first looked at it, but I guess I was wrong. http://www.indiewire.com/2017/12/phantom-thread-70mm-screening-grainy-35mm-blow-up-1201910595/ "How will the f...

Particularly slow enode

Description of problem or question: I recently switched to encoding with a "slow" setting that has been taking about 5 hours for a movie. I'm not in a particular rush, and any benefit in quality is worth the compromise. But I'm currently running an encode that is set to take 10 hours and I can't fi...

Guess so! Glad that I'm not going crazy. Maybe its time for me to go back and see the updates in the documentation.

Re: [Fixed] HB Won't Save My Audio Settings w/ Custom Presets

Is that somehow different than "Update Selected Preset?" Nobody is asking for an autosave feature. Just an acknowledgment that this is an actual - if rare - bug that is occurring. I have created and tried to update 4 user presets. None of which are saving. When I choose "Update" I get the confirmati...

Re: [Fixed] HB Won't Save My Audio Settings w/ Custom Presets

I'm having the same problem with the nightly builds. I set up a default using both the "configure defaults" button as well as the traditional Audio tab. Neither are being saved. If I choose a different preset and then switch back to mine, the audio settings are gone. Even if I hit "restore defaults"...

Best way to encode 24-bit PCM

Been loving Handbrake for years! Amazing piece of software that I'm incredibly grateful for. It is my understanding that HB still doesn't passthru PCM audio, at least not 24-bit PCM. Whats the best way / closest setting to passthru for 24-bit PCM? I read that FLAC is only lossless for 16-bit PCM. Is...

Re: DTS-HD Passthru failing on one title

Upgraded and gave it another shot, but same end result. Its very odd because I don't have a problem in general getting the DTS-HD passthru working. I'm wondering if it is somehow unique to this title? HandBrake 0.10.1.6962 - 64bit Version OS: Microsoft Windows NT 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 - 64bit CPU:...

DTS-HD Passthru failing on one title

Longtime HB user, and normally have no problems. Using HB to archive my bluray library for use across devices. Today, though, I ran into a bug with a particular title (I presume) since its the same pre-set I always use. Using DTS-HD passthru on Wreck-It Ralph, I end up with the lossy DTS audio track...
