Not anymore. The new Warner Archive Collection release that came out about a year ago is a very clean transfer. The only grain now is what was intended to be there.

Quite true. I should have said "AVC with no additional compression". In other words, straight off the disc.

New Intel driver and H.265 QSV encoding - excellent quality!

Intel this week released a new GPU driver for newer generation CPUs and Win10 64-bit. According to the release notes, they not only fixed the Handbrake problems but included a new version of the Intel Media SDK that improves QSV encoding. I tried it out last night, encoding the Blu-ray version of Ba...

Re: QSV no longer working with later Intel graphics drivers

Since you have a Skylake family CPU and Win10 64-bit, the new drivers Intel released this week should work for you. The release notes specifically mention fixing problems with Handbrake.

All quite true, of course, but the OP was simply trying to avoid further compression. As you all well know.

I'm talking about MakeMKV, not Handbrake. Handbrake compresses the video, MakeMKV does not.

Re: Could you please implement original video passthrough for matroska output.

MakeMKV is your one-stop solution if you're using the most common audio codecs. It can re-code the audio and automatically mux it into an MKV container with the uncompressed video stream. Doesn't get any easier.

New Intel GPU driver 15.60 and Handbrake

The release notes for the just-released Intel GPU driver 15.60 mentions a problem with Handbrake, but only for "compression".

I'm not clear what they mean. Are they talking about QuickSync encoding, H.265 encoding, what?

Do you guys have any more info?

When using CQ, does encode speed only affect file size?

I usually do my encodes at Slow, but all the new presets are Fast or Very Fast.

If I'm setting CQ at a good number (e.g., 18 for SD sources), does my Slow encode speed change the picture quality at all, or only the file size?

Re: GPU rendering?

In some cases it can use very little CPU, if QSV-asccelerated decoding is enabled and if the source is H.264 4:2:0 8-bit. In your opinion, Rodeo, has QSV encoding improved enough to match my "x264 -slower CQ=18" SD source encodes? I haven't tried it for a couple of years because the quali...

I read that in the build notes, but the option is missing from the WinGUI dropdown control. VP8 is there, but not VP9.

Re: Add an option for Select Source to remember source path between sessions

Just wanted to inform the Handbrake public that my feature request was mostly granted in the latest nightlies. Select Source remembers the path between sessions now, but it is the default behavior rather than an option. Good enough for me.

Thanks, team!

Add an option for Select Source to remember source path between sessions

Handbrake Nightly for Win64 (May 20 build) remembers the source path as long as the program is open. A nice option would be for it to remember that path the next time the program is launched. I usually get my source files from the same folder, but not always, so I'd like to see it as an option rathe...

There's a tool called MkvToMp4 that will do this for you. It hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it does what the name says.

New solution for activating QuickSync on dual GPU machine

I've always had a problem activating QuickSync on my machine with a dedicated graphics card. Sometimes the "fake monitor" trick worked, sometimes it didn't. A couple days ago I bought a CompuLab Display Emulator on Amazon for $15. Plugged it into my motherboard HDMI port, and now the Intel...

Re: What's Up with Encoding Old Classic Movies = REALLY Big

I encode a lot of old movies, too. I like to preserve the grain so I use the x264 "Grain" tuning. The resulting file is twice the size, but I have plenty of drive space and the movie looks great. To my eyes, denoiseing really messes with the original cinematography.

Decomb problem

I just got the DVD of the film Pygmalion. I played it on MPC-HC with LAV software deinterlacing enabled, and it looked fine. I ran it through the latest released version of Handbrake with my usual setting of Decomb=Default, and the resulting file had a lot of combing artifacts. I got pretty much the...

Re: Will encoding with HANDBRAKE damage the hard disk?

Handbrake stresses your CPU much more than it stresses your hard drive. It will stress it even less if you're reading the source from one drive and writing to another. Don't worry about it.

That said, as others have pointed out, you MUST have a backup for your important files.
