Re: Best 5th Gen iPod Rip

The iPod Legacy preset is well-tuned for this device.

Re: Does it matter if the AC3 or DPLII track comes first?

AAC first is recommended, particularly for devices that only support one audio track (and don't grok AC3).

Re: Audio has a "cardboard tube" effect, how to fix?

Yes.

I suspect the issue is that your source is very low frequency mono AAC being upscaled to high-frequency, but I'm not certain whether that represents an issue with ffmpeg's input filter or HandBrake itself. Hopefully a dev more familiar with that stream will chime in.

This is the scan log, we need the activity log.

Re: Older movies generate larger files

If you are using CRF, it costs a *lot* more bits to encode noise from older films than it does "cleaner", more modern content. This is normal. It can be mitigated somewhat through filtering, but the filtering provided in HandBrake is very basic and will not approach what can be achieved through othe...

Re: Encoding speed slows by half

You're doing CRF encoding, so it sounds like the complexity of the title increases at some point, which will reduce encoding speed. If I had to guess, MediaCoder is encoding via ABR, which will result in more consistent performance (at the expense of inconsistent quality).

Re: New Windows GUI prototype

Honestly? I think any effort on a next-gen Windows GUI should be spent on tight integration with libhb rather than shimming it via CLI. It was a quick-and-dirty approach that is an extraordinary pain to maintain and keep consistent with other ports and stands as the only front-end that doesn't "spea...

Re: Problems with Dolby Surround

VLC should grok AC3-in-MP4 and AC3-in-MKV, so you should be able to use direct passthru without difficulty (and without reducing audio quality).

Re: AC3 5.0 ch

How exactly would you like to mix 5 channels "down" into 6? What would you like HandBrake to stuff into the sixth empty/phantom channel, given that it would require making a surround matrix that did not previously exist?

Re: Problems with Dolby Surround

There is no "best", there is only "compatible". Without knowing precise details of your surround setup and software player, there's no way to make a sane recommendation. If you want to future-proof it for other playback devices/setup in the future, it becomes even more interesting.

Re: Unable to get any surround down sampling working in 0.9.4

I did some more experiments and I do get Surround with Pro Logic II, my amp shows L/R/C and S. I think the only difference between full AC3 and PLII is you don't get Stereo in the back speakers. Of course you do. Set your amp to DPL2 and not standard DPL (which muxes the separated rear surrounds in...

Re: Audio settings for iPod Touch

I doubt it's downmixing PCM to stereo, since PCM by default _is_ stereo in the source. Sourcing from AC3 or DTS should be fine for surround content - the former is advantageous because it allows for secondary audio track pass-thru (i.e. "real" unmodified AC3 on AppleTV, for instance), the latter is ...

Re: Segfault Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit PAE with 720p

not sure why I need to justify such a trifle, but the reason is simply that I did not copy paste the command line but entered it manually. And no, it is no Blu-Ray Rip but a TV recording. Because we have a zero-tolerance anti-piracy rule, which you're aware of because you read them when you signed ...

Re: ATV Plays in Full Screen, iTunes only Widescreen!

ATV forces output to the *correct* aspect ratio. Your DVD player is obviously set to some sort of "stretchy" mode where it will fill the screen of your widescreen LCD TV even though it requires distortion to do so. There is nothing wrong with HandBrake, iTunes, or the ATV, nor can the ATV be "mis-tu...

Re: Apple's encoding method

For SD encoding, they use a modified Ateme encoder at 1500kbps ABR with custom zoning from direct digital sources (read: not DVD - much, MUCH higher resolution and bitrate) and do fixed-resolution anamorphic encodes. Apple's encoding is lowest-common-denominator - they cannot go beyond the specs of ...

Re: Audio settings for iPod Touch

"Optimal" depends on you. We default to DPL2 because it a) sounds exactly like stereo if only two speakers/headphones are in use, and b) can be separated to something *approximating* 5.0 discrete with an appropriate tuner/surround sound speaker set (yes, even when sourced off an iPod). If you want t...

It is worth noting, however, that you will lose chapter information when doing this. Not that there are any easy ways of preventing that. ;)

Not for nothing, but why did you try to masquerade the input filename? If it's your own Blu-Ray rip, then I can't imagine why you'd bother to try to alter the log, and if it's not (which seems much more likely), you clearly know we won't offer support, otherwise you wouldn't have taken steps to obfu...

Can you show the output from a title scan? Even if the commentary track doesn't "start" until halfway through the title (odd in and of itself), it should still appear.
