Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
For those who are using the customized settings I suggested earlier in the thread, just would like to let you know that I have been using 8 b-frames for a while now and it works really fine. So since 8 b-frames is what x264 --preset veryslow sets, I'll stick with that from now on.

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
If I use the high profile preset with strict anamorphic, but up the RF to 22 will I notice a significant drop off in quality? I am okay with a long encode, so I will try your advanced settings too. Depends on what you consider "significant". Visual quality expectation is entirely up to yo...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Excuse my ignorance (i'm new to this), but what is the best way to keep the file size under 5GB while maintaining good quality for my ATV3? Should I increase RF significantly? The only way to make sure videos fit under 5gb is to encode with an "Average Bitrate" (use a 2-pass encoding for ...

I can't figure out a "logic" explanation. Everything I know about video tells me what is happening in your case is impossible... which proves I still have much to learn!

Does you TV/LCD actually confirm via OSD/menu that it is set to 60hz?Flo wrote:That said, I've had my Apple TV set at 60Hz since I got it and I never noticed any issues playing back 25 fps content, even though that combination of input and output frequency should exhibit judder.

Re: ATV2 and ATV3 drive me nuts...please help...micro stutte
I mean if you do PAL speedup, you need to adjust the audio too, which changes the pitch (there are ways to correct that, but either way, it's lossy). Sure, speeding up audio has consequences. But to me, they are (way) less noticeable than motion judder (as stated earlier, I use eac3to which does a ...

For the terrible stuttering you mean? Audio was fine. Video was terrible. Strong motion judder, as I suspected with 25p @ 60hz.Rodeo wrote:Video quality or audio quality: pick one

Interesting, all my encodes are indeed 25p CFR. Never tried to force 60hz with 25p encodes. I'll give it a try when I get back home tonight, just to see how my 25p encodes play... Re: ATV2 and ATV3 drive me nuts...please help...micro stutte
In the case of 23.976p/24p input, what you are referring to as "micro stuttering" is probably motion judder. The ATV3 can output 50hz (or 60hz) and you TV sets its refresh rate accordingly. Since the movie framerate doesn't match the refresh rate, you get motion judder. Normally I'd agree...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
It's much slower indeed. But if you like the quality and can afford the encode time, you get a relatively small file compared with rf=20.
For instance, I encoded Avatar 1080p with 4 audio tracks (2xaac stereo + 2xac3 DD), the file is a little below 9gb.

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Do any of you guys suffer from motion judder? To what extent? How do you deal with it? I do see such artifacts from time to time, and it can be quite annoying. I get rid of them by: - speeding up the movie to 25fps (no need to re-enconde video, just force the framerate in the container; still need t...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
With these settings, the h264 encoder (i.e x264) embedded within Handbrake will take MORE time to analyze the video stream, but it will make a MUCH better use of the bits, resulting in a MUCH better visual quality. No, not in my opinion. You're vastly overstating things. First, looking at your chan...

I've been using high profile with 21 constant quality for 720p and 22 for 1080p. I'm surprised to see how low peoples constant quality is here. With 20 I was seeing some blu-rays get over 10 gigs which is pretty high considering I would like the option to add them to my new iPad. I've done some com...

Wow, that's interesting. My ATV3 will arrive in a couple of days. I'll experiment and report in this thread. Tested several max b-frames settings with a 1080p source. 3, 4, 5, 8, 16, they all work fine on the ATV3. Can't see any visual difference. File sizes decrease as max b-frames increase, but i...

Mmm... I'm wondering how these 2 sets of x264 settings compare in terms of quality (not storage obviously):
--preset medium --tune film --crf 20
--preset veryslow --tune film --crf 21
Anyone has an idea? (I doubt placebo would make a difference in the second scenario...)

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Max B-Frames: 3 (this is largely arguable since this is a constraint from the blu-ray standard which probably doesn't apply to the Apple TV 3) veryslow specifies 8, which works just fine on my iPhone 4 S (don't have an AppleTV 2/3 to test, but its H.264 decoding hardware should be very similar) Wor...

@rodeo Thanks for your feedback rodeo. Yep, you're right, 720p @ 4.0 accepts 9 ref frames and not 6, typo in my post... I'll update it. Regarding Max B-Frames, you're right again (!). As I said in my post, I'm sticking to the Blu Ray standard for now, at least until I can do some testing with higher...
