Re: 2160p (4K) Preset

@Breticus, are you using the Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset in the nightly build? It should work.

Re: How I got smooth playing MKV from miniDV AVI

Maybe, but we will need to see the activity log from the encode; otherwise, it’s a stab in the dark.

Re: Enabling of both the denoise methods Hqdn3d and NLMeans in either through advanced tab or CLI

You can do this on the CLI, but usually one or the other is what you want. NLMeans is generally superior in quality, but slower.

Re: 2160p (4K) Preset

Yes, the nightly builds have multiple new 4K presets. There are not any General category 4K presets, since right now it’s difficult to make one that is widely compatible. For instance, Apple only supports 4K HEVC in MP4, while Roku only supports it in MKV, etc. So for now, they are device specific u...

Re: ATV4 HEVC preset

Grain in general compresses poorly. The x265 encoder has a grain tune which may help, but may also affect compatibility. You can also choose to use a denoise filter to reduce or remove the grain, or as you've found, reduce the RF to throw more bits at the problem.

It looks like your source video is HDR, which HandBrake does not yet support. Perhaps try a non-HDR 4K video and see if that works to be sure.

Re: OPUS: am I becoming paranoid?

You may be confusing audio delay in terms of time to playback and audio delay in terms of sync with video. The latency of the decoder should not affect the actual sync much if at all, so if you’re noticing drift it’s probably unrelated. Anyway, provide an activity log and we can take a closer look a...

Re: Apple TV 4k HEVC Settings For 2160p Content

Hmm, try Presets > Reset Official Presets (or similar name). This should have happened already, but this will ensure you have the latest. Then you should see Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround under Devices.

Re: Apple TV 4k HEVC Settings For 2160p Content

The current nightly has a 4K Apple preset and updates under the hood for compatibility. If it’s not working, we’ll definitely need that log.

If I recall correctly, the behavior of AC3 pass through differed on Windows for the 1.0.0 release series. Please try the nightly build.

Finder is notorious for needing a good whack to be up to date. Option click the Finder icon on the Dock and relaunch it, if you’re in a pickle.

Also, consider using one of the Gmail presets if you need < 25 MB file sizes.

Re: Question about Subtitles for CLI

Not specifying -r is equivalent to Same As Source. Unless you have a reason for forcing constant frame rate (which is just variable fixed to the average, when not specifying a rate), just leave off --cfr and HandBrake will do The Right Thing™. Another option is to do what we do in the official prese...

Re: Correct encoding for Subtitles

Currently we don't have a way to intelligently set the SRT character encoding, and it's not saved in a preset. So there is no easy way to change the default (unless you use the command line version and set it manually there). We could probably try to detect UTF-8 specifically down the road via the (...

If you save a preset in the GUI, you can recall it using the CLI:

Code: Select all

Definitely sounds like an encoding issue, try UTF-8. Basically, the SRT format isn’t very well standardized and it could be anything.

Re: How to denoise dark parts

Yeah, there's a point where the noise is coarse enough that it can't be easily removed. The above should at least blend the hard edges together a bit, making it look less harsh. An actual video editor would be needed to do better, and it's probably not worth the time.
