Re: CentOS 6 Compile Issue

There exists CentOS/RHEL 6 and 7 documentation for compiling the CLI: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.0.0/deve ... entos.html

1.0.0 and later should work without modifications if the dependencies are installed per the article.

Re: NLMeans denoise filter

Interlacing typically only presents combing artifacts during periods of motion. Deinterlacers can sometimes be a bit brute for periods of lower or non-existent motion. Combing detection allows us to estimate the situation to process light or heavy combing differently, and frames with zero combing ar...

Re: Handbrake suddenly makes bad compression

Just took a look at the images in this thread. My display is properly calibrated and I see the apparent lack of fine detail.

It would appear that something has changed; without encode logs comparing a good and bad encode it's hard to say what. Factors other than bit rate could be involved.

Official HandBrake downloads

In light of recent malware attacks affecting popular Open Source app hosting site FossHub, now seems to be a great time to talk about official HandBrake downloads. Official HandBrake downloads have never been hosted by FossHub. That said, FossHub does maintain a HandBrake downloads page that is not ...

Re: [Invalid] audio-copy-mask is empty by default

As s55 said, the behavior was correct at the time. The mask wasn't empty, just AAC. After further discussion, all formats have been added to the CLI Default audio copy mask in https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/commit/52d1b2fd6e3a927793e354c07a7396040ec5c59e. Re: NLMeans denoise filter

Conventional wisdom is that one must denoise before everything else. In practice, our combing detection works fine on noisy sources, and denoising with an averaging filter like NLMeans could actually make things worse. It feels wrong to me to say we don't denoise first, but we don't and it works gre...

Re: NLMeans denoise filter

Realistically, none of the above are planned for the current NLMeans. Should I attempt a new version (NLMeans 2 or the like), I would like to implement the last idea. As it turns out, NLMeans is limited by the speed of the memory bus and the amount of memory necessary for computation. So the second ...

And the subsequent comment: I should add, if you'd like to build a proper mingw toolchain, try the bash script included with HandBrake's source at scripts/mingw-w64-build. This is what is used as the cross-compilation toolchain for the nightly builds. Note that there is currently an issue with image...

Re: Nightly - VP9 doesn't work

New Windows nightly builds are up now that should solve the issue. In short, we recently updated our cross-compilation toolchain (how we build much of Windows HandBrake on Linux) and VP9 seems to have a bug interacting with the threading library. In lieu of a better workaround, threads are currently...

Most devices support anamorphic these days. Unless you have a device you're sure doesn't, leave it on. Modulus 2 is fine, again unless you have a specific problem.

I created a new issue on GitHub in case you would like to watch for any code updates: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/234

In the meantime, your solution of using a custom preset is the correct workaround. Thanks!

Re: How do I turn off "Two Pass" to one with HandbrakeCLI?

@imkow Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The new presets do indeed use constant quality by default, but also have similar 2-pass abr settings available just a click away. We need to add --no-two-pass and --no-turbo (or similar) to make it easy to override this on the CLI. Also, if/when this...

Re: Exported movies have an unstable framerate

It could be the case that the video is too complex to decode in realtime, resulting in a slowdown followed by a speedup. This can be common on some lower end devices.

Try reducing your H.264 Level to 3.1. You may also need to lower your quality (raise RF).

You probably want to add a "Foreign Audio Search" subtitle track. The new presets in the nightly build do this for you automatically.

Re: Which crf values would be insane for VHS sources?

You may be interested to know that the nightly build has a new NLMeans denoiser preset called Tape that can help clean up VHS sources. Sane RF ranges for SD H.264/x264 are 18-22, but in some cases as low as 16 may be used. Lower than that provides essentially no visible benefit in most every scenario.

Re: Anamorphic options reconsidered

The nightly build has new presets at standard resolutions that you might appreciate. If you're concerned with video compatibility with very old devices, simply disable anamorphic. Rescale at will, making sure "Keep Aspect Ratio" is enabled, and HandBrake will make sure the video isn't squeezed oddly...

Re: Please help-- avi to flash drive!!

The Normal preset should work fine, but you'll need to change the Video Encoder to MPEG-4 (it seems that your device doesn't support the default H.264). If this doesn't work, we will definitely need a log.
