With upcoming changes to data protection and privacy laws in Europe coming into effect soon, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we do have a privacy policy.
This applies to all users and visitors world-wide.

We have made a few changes to the language to make it clearer in relation to this new regulation but fundamentally, the terms and your rights are unchanged.

Re: Too high ETA for a DVD source on HEVC Matroska encode

Sounds about right. When you lowered the rate factor you asked for better quality which takes even more time to encode for an already slow encoder relative to x264. Note also that HandBrake does not use your GPU, so that’s mostly irrelevant.

You may also wish to update to HandBrake 1.1.0.

Re: CPU advice needed for x265 encoding

Hyperthreading isn’t particularly faster for video encoding since most of the important code paths are fast assembly. Easy to demonstrate by temporarily turning off HT; the speed difference is usually negligible. The 6-8 core ceiling mostly applies to x264. The x265 codec scales to many more cores. ...

Then there’s VC1. Seriously though, I wouldn’t get too hung up on quality loss, even projecting to 12’. There’s a point where it’s visually imperceptible and mostly academic. Take a look at the Adjusting quality documentation article: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/workflow/adjust-quality.html I...

Super HQ 480p30 Surround for DVD. Beyond that it’s mostly academic. The file size reduction you’re seeing is the difference between a 1990s video codec and a much more modern codec.

Re: Bizarre request - move letterbox black bars to bottom

The source is anamorphic at 720x480 stored pixels and 640x480 displayed pixels, black bars and all. You only want the picture part to be 16:9, and the storage dimensions with the new letterboxing to match the original.

Re: Bizarre request - move letterbox black bars to bottom

You need height 480 in the pad string.

Do not use RF 0; it does not do what you think and your file sizes will be much larger than the originals.

Firstly, please update to HandBrake 1.1.0, and since you’re using QSV please make sure you have the latest Graphics drivers from Intel.

HamdBrake doesn’t create WMV, but it will open them. What file type and codecs do you want to use? If they’re within HandBrake’s capabilities, you’ll have plenty of free assistance here.

AVX2 instructions are twice as wide as AVX instructions, so theoretically where there are such optimizations you should get twice the throughput.

Re: Bizarre request - move letterbox black bars to bottom

Sure. If your source is letterboxed 1920x1080, the automatic cropping will remove the black borders. Then pad with black again to 1920x1080 pixels and orient the image to be at the top (plus 2 pixels offset because of a bug in the current pad filter). HandBrakeCLI -i source_file --preset-import-gui ...

Re: Bizarre request - move letterbox black bars to bottom

If your source is letterboxed (black bars top and bottom) you could try cropping only the top bar. Otherwise, you will need to use the pad filter from the command line interface (see the --help). Eventually it will be available in the graphical interface, but this is dependent on a coming overhaul o...

Have you tried the new Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset in HandBrake 1.1.0 and later? Previous HandBrake versions do not create Apple-compatible HEVC.

We will need that activity log to troubleshoot.

So, perhaps the Super HQ 480p30 preset and remove the second (surround) audio track. See https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html for information on adjusting quality further. I imagine you will not see any difference between the source and destination at RF 16.

Re: Suddenly audio no longer in sync

Personally, since DV is an old interlaced format, I would probably capture as Type-2 to avoid the issues you're having, and do an archival quality transcode to MP4 or MKV with HandBrake, employing the Decomb filter to remove the interlacing and optionally NLMeans denoising with its Tape tune, if res...

Re: How to select 5.1 audio over stereo?

Selection behavior is defined by language and not channels, so this is currently not possible to automate. You can manually remove the stereo track(s) for a single encode on the audio tab.
