Re: RF and File Size

RF naturally varies greatly with the source material's complexity, so you'll be stuck with trial and error for every source. If you really care about size, 2-pass average bit rate will still allow quality to vary while maintaining an overall average bit rate, hence its name and purpose.

Re: "Mixdown" DTS 2.0 to Dolby Surround

Aside, if the source audio is truly stereo with no matrixed or discrete components, then the stereo mixdown will be irrelevant and you will have stereo.

Re: "Mixdown" DTS 2.0 to Dolby Surround

It's matrix encoded. You will need a compatible Dolby-capable receiver set to one of the appropriate Dolby decoding modes. Otherwise, you'll hear stereo.

Try setting the deinterlace filter to EEDI2.

Re: Is x265 AMD VCE GPU encoding really better quality than x264 CPU for a 1080p video ?

In the two scenarios I mentioned, H.265 can produce the same quality with fewer bits, or higher quality at the same bit rate, however you want to look at it. In the low bit rate scenario, it often can produce higher quality with fewer bits.

Re: Is x265 AMD VCE GPU encoding really better quality than x264 CPU for a 1080p video ?

H.265 is generally more capable than H.264 in two scenarios: low bit rate encodes, and >1080p (4K) resolution encodes. For high quality 1080p encodes at medium to higher bit rates, x264 generally produces a result equal to x265 and exceeding hardware encoders. So it really depends on what you're doi...

Re: Only 2 formats ubuntu 19.04

The version of HandBrake packaged by Ubuntu is not under our control, and they have made changes such as removing other formats. Please install the official PPA or Flatpak, see handbrake.fr.

1.2.2 did not have changes for Linux, thus 1.2.1 is the latest Linux release.

Re: Question: Is 'Web Optimized' enabled by default in CLI?

Not related to HTML. HTTP 1.1 supports it, just need the web server software to support it and be enabled.

Re: AMD VCE / GPU Clock speed during encoding

VCE is a separate ASIC chip on your graphics card. The GPU processor is not used directly.

Re: Question: Is 'Web Optimized' enabled by default in CLI?

Because if your web server supports it, HTTP allows your browser to request any byte range. So it asks for the end if the file first to figure things out.

Re: Encode seperate files, er, seperately?

I suspect you're overwriting the first output file with each encode. Either change the name manually for each video before adding to the queue, or enable automatic file naming in the preferences.

Re: OT: How to get properties

Code: Select all

du -s *.mp4 **/*.mp4 2>/dev/null | sort -nr
Replace the two .mp4 with your choice or .* to search all file types:

Code: Select all

du -s *.* **/*.* 2>/dev/null | sort -nr
This only shows total file size but should be useful for identifying large files (listed first) for further analysis.

Disable the Align A/V Start setting on the Summary tab. Doing this could ruin audio video sync if your video has MP4 edit lists.

Re: h264 more efficient than h265?

The state of x265 is still evolving compared to the very well optimized and mature x264. It's conceivable it will get better.

Currently, x265 is always better for two scenarios: low bit rate encodes including SD, and 4K. For high quality HD encodes, x264 continues to shine.

Re: .MP4 to .AVC --- How do I do this??

I'm guessing that indicates MPEG-4 Part 2, not H.264. You'll need to select the MPEG-4 video encoder on the video tab.
