Re: Only first part of DVD gets encoded

MakeMKV in its default configuration does not transcode, it simply remuxes the audio/video/other tracks into an MKV file without changing them. Its strengths are working around damaged and poorly mastered discs as well as supporting commercial discs. HandBrake, on the other hand, is a transcoder. An...

Wait until it's fully implemented. Nightly builds will get it first. See https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/1085

Re: Does --stop-at have a 1 second minimum trim?

Try --stop-at="pts:274500000" which is the base clock 90,000 Hz times the frame rate.

The nightly build supports 7.1 aac passthru in MP4. Encoding will be added eventually now that we have switched from Libav to FFmpeg.

Re: subtitle configuration question

Subtitles tab > Selection Behavior. Make your changes there and then save a new HandBrake preset to use for your encodes.

Re: How to shrink the file size but not loose the quality?

The documentation has some pointers on quality: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html

As others note, any of the general 1080p presets should compress BD sources more than the originals, even while retaining visual quality.

Re: Handbrake combine files?

Not an issue, MKVToolNix will gladly remux and combine the streams into an MKV container without re-encoding.

MKVToolNix can combine your files into one MKV you can then feed to HandBrake.

Re: convert Mini Dv to MP4

You can probably import the Mini-DV using iMovie, assuming it still supports this feature (it used to). Then you can export to MP4 directly or export to something like Apple ProRes or Intermediate Codec, and feed that to HandBrake.

Re: TrueHD 7.1 to EAC3 7.1 - Possible?

This question probably would have been better suited to a new thread as opposed to reviving a year-old thread.

Short answer: HandBrake does not currently support encoding to 7.1 E-AC-3.

Re: Possible to limit thread usage?

Yes, this should work for the x264 encoder (x265 uses thread pools and the options are different: http://x265.readthedocs.io/en/default/threading.html).

For the most part, there is no need to mess with this.

@Ronin this is one of many posts I've seen from you with misleading statements. While I assume it is likely not intentional, perhaps avoid giving others advice on this forum while you're still trying to understand the concepts yourself. Thanks.

Change the automatic cropping setting to custom and set all values to zero (HandBrake crops black borders by default).

Re: To rip first or not

Vice-versa. As resolution goes up, not quite as much quality is needed perceptually. So Super HQ 720p30 Surround uses RF 17 which is very slightly lower quality (single digit percent bit rate) than Super HQ 480p30 Surround at RF 16. It's not a huge issue, there are no other changes between those two...

Re: Automatic croping broken in the latest nightly

Increasing the number of preview frames usually only works in the case auto cropping is too aggressive. All it takes is one frame with non-black(ish) data at the edges to cause it to back off.

Re: To rip first or not

DVDs are 480p (NTSC; America, etc.) or 576p (PAL; Europe, etc.). You may want to use the Super HQ 480p30 (or Super HQ 576p25 for Europe) preset. Minor differences to the 720p presets, notably a slight bump in quality. Not enough that I would redo any existing encodes, just for future reference.

Would be interesting to know whether Plex is transcoding or serving the video untouched. If it's not messing with the video at all, iTunes is certainly suspect.

Looks like it supports vanilla MPEG-4 and AAC in MP4. I would probably start with Fast 480p30 and change the video codec to MPEG-4.

Re: ATV 4K H.264 Baseline Profile Preset - Which one is correct?

Yes, it's possible say to have a higher bit rate for 0.25 seconds followed by an extremely low bit rate for 0.75 seconds, totaling under the limit for the full second period. This is normally not an issue as every modern and plenty of older devices that support at Level 4.0 and higher have at least ...
