That's exciting!
I think I'm going to redo my entire media library at some point-- and that point will probably when you add support for that to the software.
Thanks for all your help, and the amazing software!

Re: With the M1, is there any encode by quality option in video toolbox?
If I've been happy with H.264 quality in the default software encoded 1080p30 format, what video toolbox H.265 quality setting do you think would give me similar video quality? Thanks for all your help with this! I've been using handbrake for ~a decade on my old iMac, but this hardware encoder stuff...

Or are we still stuck at a fixed bit rate?

Could we get a speed boost via GPU utilization?
Looks like you can do a call to the video card for h.264 decryption: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2010/tn2267.html and I feel like I remember a feature of Lion (or maybe it was snow leopard?) where they added an API call to the GPU for processing (Open CL maybe?). Any chance ...

Re: Why Constant quality over Average bit rate?
It depends. If you ran a cq encode and the resulting encode had a bitrate of 2000 then you ran a 2 pass encode at 2000 you should get the same result. But if you ran a cq encode and the resulting encode had a bitrate of 3000 then you ran a 2 pass encode at 2000 your 2 pass would be worse. This is w...

Re: Why Constant quality over Average bit rate?
If you don't care at all about encode times, for a given bit rate, should the output be better with 2 pass avg than with constant quality? I'm not super concerned about consistency from one movie file to the next... so much as getting the most quality I can out of my files. Currently I'm just using ...

Why Constant quality over Average bit rate?
It seems like everyone who is in the know prefers constant quality to average bit rate. Why is that? Logically, to my mind, average quality makes more sense to me-- some scenes are more intense than others and need more data to be properly encoded. Average allows those scenes to have more and the ot...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
Still been playing around with various settings to try to find something I like. I put it on VBR with an average bit rate of 3000 and two pass encoding turned on, and I kind of feel like it looks better than high. It looks like the sharpness is maintained but the graininess is somehow removed....? F...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
As mentioned by HB dev, thats not going to be possible. Apple/Studios uses the master source content. We on the other hand are already using compressed source material. Such as DVD and BR. I understand we can't get their source material, but don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to use the ...

Re: *** AppleTV 3 and the New iPad (Presets) ***
So, I encoded a couple of files using "High" today. The results look beautiful, but the files are HUGE! I was fooling with "dodgeball", starting with a BD rip. "High" left alone made a 9.88 gb file "High" with "large file size" unchecked made a 8.55...

Even if it's an exact duplicate of the High profile, still makes sense to me to have a ATV3 preset under devices. Otherwise people will have this question ALL the time.

Re: Apple TV legacy preset gone?
Nor is the current (non legacy) preset any good-- most of the files end up somewhere between 540p and 555p-- hardly HD, imo! The ATV1 can play 720p, ATV legacy preset files without issue. I know, I have literally 6000+ of them! The standard ATV preset is conservative because an unhacked ATV1 would ...

Apple TV legacy preset gone?
So, I know it's not the most popular of devices, but is there any possible way to get the Apple TV legacy preset back? I have two ATV2s and two ATV(1)s-- I never use the ATV2s because the library support in the hacked ATV1 is VASTLY better than it is in the ATV2. I just updated handbrake, and poof, ...
