Re: What is it called when my video does this(gif in post).

My videos only do that when the source has been corrupted or not processed correctly before ever hitting handbrake.

Re: Estimated File Size After Compression

If you typically process videos of a similar length, you can usually get a good estimate just by doing 2 or 3 previews and looking at the file size of those. You get to know what size preview files translate to what full video size. Depending on the format you're processing it into (like mkv), you c...

Functionality Tweeks

Please describe what you would like to see added to HandBrake: I would like: 1) the categories of presets to be collapsed by default, rather than expanded. I would assume that most users, like myself, have their own custom presets saved and use those 99.9% of the time. When opening the program in t...

Default Audio Track Names

Please describe what you would like to see added to HandBrake: I would like a previously included feature to be returned, as it's been removed from the most recent update(s). When configuring defaults in audio, it no longer allows the addition of a track title. For instance, in the past, I have had...

AC3 Passthru of DTS Audio--Why Does it Work?

Hey, all! I've been using Handbrake to backup my personal Blu-ray library for a couple years now, and am getting around to re-doing some of my older discs that I had encoded without surround (I believe to maximize compatibility with the older Apple TV's). Recently I switched to MKV format from MP4, ...

Re: Burning PGS subs smaller size

If you use .mkv instead of .mp4, you can pass the PGS subs through, then run the sub file through a couple different programs to change the size of it if you want. Probably not the answer you're looking for, but thought I'd throw it out there. Here's some detailing of how to do so, and adjust the si...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

You may want to simply tell handbrake to NOT crop the video; If you're playing a 1440x1080 video on a 1920x1080 screen, the display is going to put the bars back in anyway. You will have a larger file, but the subtitles will be the "right size". I've had to do this with (essentially) 1920...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

If it needs to be an external step, then fine--there are plenty of other external processes involved in preparing a video for encoding. To me, the issue is that HB is letting you passthrough something that will not be relevant on any player. I adore HB, and it has changed the face of how I enjoy my ...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

Saying it's the player's fault is essentially saying HB does not support PGS unless it's 100% burned in. So you're going to blame HB for your player mishandling it, when HB itself handles it fine? So it's not that Handbrake is doing something incorrectly necessarily, it's that it's passing the sub ...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

So, for anyone else scouring the internet for a semblance of a solution to this, here's the best workaround I can manage: -Process file through HB as .mkv, including the passthrough PGS. -Extract .sup file from the .mkv via mkvtoonix and the MKVExtractGUI. -Open extracted .sup file with BDSup2Sub. -...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

So what would you do in my situation then? Sacrifice file size and efficiency by leaving black space in the video? Spend 20 mins to half an hour of hands-on work for each video, in addition to the actual encode? How many videos that you encode do you actually leave untouched dimension-wise? As I men...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

Getting this to work right could make such a huge difference. If it works, then subs attached to the file will take an extra 2 to 3 seconds of selecting them in HB and be 100% accurate. Without it working right, for each video it means 5 - 15 minutes of demuxing to extract the file, 10 minutes of ru...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

The problem is if you trim the subtitles you risk chopping off important text. Theoretically that's a possibility, though I don't think I've ever seen a sub extend past the original video size. If the video was meant to be viewed on a 4:3 screen, for example, then the subs would generally be arrang...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

OK, so, since I'm using .mkv now, I can take advantage of the container's flexibility by using mkvtools. Here's what I just tried: Run a short video w/the cropping and messed up subs Run the identical video only w/out cropping and subs that play accurately Placed both files into mkvtools, keeping al...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

Just tried it with today's nightly, and it still distorts the subs. Thanks again for the suggestion. I understand that it's the player that's doing the smashing, but if we're telling Handbrake to trim the video, should it not be able to tell the subtitles to be trimmed (not re-sized) as well? It ess...

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

I'll give it a shot, Woodstock--thanks for helping.

I did just try a video w/20 pixels of black on top and bottom (none on sides) and it does in fact squish the subs vertically when cropped that way, as well--so it's not just a horizontal issue.

Re: 4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

? And what playback software do you suggest? Media Player and the Windows "Movie" player neither one recognize the PGS subtitle (which is irrelevant anyway, as the end-result I'm looking for is playability through Plex). When both players on my PC that are able to play back a file w/a PGS ...

They are screens of the PGS track played back through VLC (not burned in). They do the same thing when run through Plex to my Apple TV as well.

4:3 Video + Black Bar Cropping = Distorted PGS Subs

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible: Hello, all! Re: Preference for Stereo AAC Audio - 5.1 Mixdown or 2.0 Track?

It's not an issue with the encode itself--the raw files themselves, before ever touching handbrake, have that volume difference. All I'm asking is if that's NORMALLY how it is (since I don't usually mess with 2.0 source tracks).

Re: Preference for Stereo AAC Audio - 5.1 Mixdown or 2.0 Track?

I typically use the 5.1 source for my 2.0 outputs because the 2.0 tracks are often commentary or descriptive audio instead of clean audio. This is exactly why I never bothered rummaging through the various audio tracks of a source. I've always stuck with the default and mixed it down, save for the ...

Re: Preference for Stereo AAC Audio - 5.1 Mixdown or 2.0 Track?

Even pre-handbrake, just playing the Blu-ray source file on my PC, the 5.1 has low volume dialog, the 2.0 has loud (and seemingly more appropriate for stereo systems). After encoding, w/a 2.0 mixed down from 5.1, and a 5.1 AC3, both those audio tracks have the low volume dialog. As I've always just ...

Re: Preference for Stereo AAC Audio - 5.1 Mixdown or 2.0 Track?

Are you sure you're listening to the HB 2ch mixdown on your soundbar, not the 6ch AC3 track? AFAIK most soundbars support AC3. I use handbrake / Plex / Apple TV to get to my TV -> soundbar. All my Plex files default to stereo unless I manually specify otherwise when playing. I'm sure the bar will s...
