Re: Bluray rip quality less than stellar
Yes, I tried playing them within the VM using vlc as well as using vlc from a remote laptop accessing the directories via NFS. Distortion in both of them in the exact same places. And it was repeatable -- replaying a section produced the exact same distortion in the exact same way. The distortion wa...

Re: Bluray rip quality less than stellar
To follow up... It turns out not to have been my Handbrake settings at all. Once I installed the software I'm using on the host operating system and not inside a virtual machine, the rendering issues disappeared. I had been running Mint inside a VM on a CentOS 5 host because I didn't want to go thro...

Re: Bluray rip quality less than stellar
Okay, thanks. (I didn't attach a log because there was nothing log-related about my question. I was looking for general guidance from people who have ripped BDs before but I didn't have a problem with a specific rip. However, I'll try out what I've learned here and keep the logs from those attempts ...

Re: Bluray rip quality less than stellar
Only one wy to find out, try it!! Well, I was trying not to reinvent the wheel, y'know... :) And also trying to save some time. I've found a few spots that are troublesome in two different BD titles so now I tell HB to only encode about 60 seconds on either side of those areas when I do my tests. A...

Re: Bluray rip quality less than stellar
Heh, thanks for the quick reply. :) Tonight I'll try running a cable from the next room and see if that takes care of that particular issue but I don't want to make that a permanent solution, so... Would dropping the image size be enough? If I drop it to 1280x1024 that should reduce the bandwidth re...

Bluray rip quality less than stellar
Okay, so I've been reading various forum threads for a couple hours now. I thought I knew at least some of what I was doing with transcoding video, but I'm going to be humble and now assume that I know nothing. ;) I want to rip my BDs to m4v's so that I can play them on my 3rd gen Apple TV and (via ...

Re: [Wont Fix] Not finding VLC.app on OSX
Good luck with that. Libdvdread needs to know the location of VLC (and it's bundled libdvdcss) at compile time. Hm. Thanks. Sounds like it needs an API that allows the location to be set from outside the library (it might already have an environment variable it uses for that). Well, I'll look into ...

Re: [Wont Fix] Not finding VLC.app on OSX
Ah. In that case there should be an error/warning message when it can't find it in the single place that it looks! I spent quite a few minutes trying to figure out why it couldn't find the codecs since VLC was clearly listed as an "Application" in the way that OSX categories applications. ...

Re: [BUG 4358] Existing subtitle cause duration of "13:15:
And it's still broken for my Men In Black DVD. :( I can't upload images here so I've put a snapshot of my Subtitle panel configuration at this URL, along with a copy of the encoding log from SVN 4358: http://www.eeconsulting.net/handbrake/ Looking at the log I don't see anything obvious about chapte...

[Wont Fix] Not finding VLC.app on OSX
I think this is a bug and not a FREQ. I created a "Downloaded Software" directory under /Applications where I put all third-party application bundles, including VLC. Handbrake can't find it however, since it's only looking in the top level directory. This link seems to have a solution. In ...

Re: [Fixed 4352] Existing subtitle cause duration of "13:15:
Excellent -- I'll give it a shot as well. I only have failures on two DVDs so far, MIB1 and MIB2, and I've ripped at least three dozen using VLC. Turning off VOBSUB and leaving close captioning on worked, but I'll go back and rip them again using SVN. Incidentally, the build process documented on th...

Re: [svn3972 Bug] Existing subtitle cause duration of "13:15
Sorry, I wasn't clear. By "add some logging" I meant modify the code to add the needed log. So some basic ability to read/modify code and ability to build from source are required. I can do this. I'm not familiar with the ".m" or ".mm" filename extensions that I see in...
