Re: Too many previews to know what to scan
Thanks. I haven't ripped a disk in about 2 years and forgot about MakeMKV. I'm sure that will solve my issue.

Re: Too many previews to know what to scan
So I invested some time and got VLC working. It shows it's playing title 59 for Chapter 1, and then titles 3 & 4 for chapters 2 & 3. Using Handbrake I ask it to open single title 59 and attempt to convert it but it fails pretty much immediately and creates this new activity log file. https:/...

Too many previews to know what to scan
Description of problem or question: Scanning disc shows 71 possible previews on a disc with 3 actual titles. How do I choose the correct 3? Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable): Scan the 1st disc of "Victoria - The Complete First Season" HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0): 1.3.0 Op...

Re: 3KB output for Julie & Julia
This ended up being a great solution for me on Gentoo. makemkv-1.8.0-r1 did a great job getting the data off of the disc and HandBrake, as always, did a good conversion.Smithcraft wrote:Or maybe pre-rip with MakeMKV?

Re: 3KB output for Julie & Julia
OK, after a reboot the 0.9.8 version for Win 7 created the same 3KB file. I then tried the most recent nightly build for Win7. It does the same thing. (Nice changes to the GUI though.) The activity log looks like it's complaining about encryption. I don't understand why that would be a problem if VL...

Re: 3KB output for Julie & Julia
If, on the other hand you believe that this is an old version and this sort of bug has likely been fixed I'll explore how to get something newer running here but there don't seem to be any official Gentoo ebuilds supporting Handbrake so its been my understanding has been that it's not easy to do. I...

Re: 3KB output for Julie & Julia
Is that really an 'official' forum policy? This version is built on Gentoo using an overlay. Same way it's been done on my machine for over 2 years and I've not had anyone ever suggest here in the past that this wasn't allowed in this forum. (Or maybe I'm just reading more into the tone of your resp...

3KB output for Julie & Julia
Hi, My wife has been after me for sometime to convert Julie & Julia for her but I'm stymied. No matter how I try I only get a 3KB output file. The disc plays fine in VLC & xine. Both tell me they are playing Title 1, Chapter 1. I've tried converting using the Single Title method & those ...

Re: What to save for future ripping?
Thanks for the pointer Rodeo. That helped me get it done. I must say that I've used Handbrake for a couple of years now and I have never seen the chapter selection item in the bottom left corner of the source selection GUI where I normally just choose /dev/dvd. Once I noticed that things moved forwa...

What to save for future ripping?
Hi, I have a DVD which causes handbrake-0.9.8 on my Gentoo machine to crash when I try to scan the DVD. I never get as far as even choosing a chapter to rip. Handbrake just disappears as soon as it starts scanning the DVD. I'm wondering if something like the directory created by 'dvdbackup -F' shoul...

Re: libdvdnav crashing which causes handbrake to crash
OK, I'll give it consideration. Not a lot of time to dig in right now though so if it goes easily great, if not then we'll just have to try and work on it later.
Thanks for the inputs, pointers and help.
Cheers,
Mark

Re: libdvdnav crashing which causes handbrake to crash
I had not but clearly HandBrake is not happy. I open the DVD, it gives me a zero-length title, and the moment I click on the profile I want to use HandBrake segfaults again. I do notice that my GUI is not like exactly what's in the documentation so I wonder if I'm using too old a version and maybe a...

Re: libdvdnav crashing which causes handbrake to crash
OK, so that explains why I don't see it in ldd, and why xine might work with this DVD right now. Are there any plans to update the patched version that you are maintaining? Is there any data I can supply about this DVD that would help you make it work better in HandBrake? If so please let me know. N...

Re: libdvdnav crashing which causes handbrake to crash
One more report, and some confusion. Due to (I think) a udev update for awhile now my system hasn't had a /dev/dvd link. I added one today by hand and this allowed xine to play the DVD just fine. handbrake & vlc continue to crash. ldd suggests vlc & xine bith use libdvdnav but I don't see ha...

The only files I could find created by Handbrake have very little in them:

libdvdnav crashing which causes handbrake to crash
This is a new DVD I got today. It crashes in both vlc & Handbrake. While I don't think this is specifically a Handbrake issue I'm not sure that the bug report post I made to the libdvdnav list is going to get through and I don't want the report to get lost. Handbrake doesn't give me any output, ...

Re: Get English subtitles for French audio portion only?
OK, I see your answer above but I don't understand it so I'll have to do some more reading. If it helps at all VLC plays the video with the subtitles I'm looking for as default. The subtitle listing is a bit complicated. When I first start the movie It's a list of 9 options: (Disabled, 4 languages, ...

Re: Get English subtitles for French audio portion only?
I believe that's what I'm doing but it isn't working. See attached Activity log. I tried again but still no subtitles. In looking at the online manual I got the feeling that maybe this only works when the foreign language is a relatively small portion, say under 10%. I think in this film it may be m...

Get English subtitles for French audio portion only?
Hi, With the DVD of 'Hereafter' there is a considerable portion of the audio that's spoken in French. I've been unable to discover how to get subtitles burned in for that portion of the audio only. I need burned in as my TV playback from disk doesn't support any form of on/off for subtitles. Hopeful...

Re: 99 titles - which one to use?
Well, it did find that title 1 is the root title on the disc. There's a good chance this is the correct title and something is just going wrong during the encode. Like I said before, vlc is really going to be the best way to verify which is the proper title. Hi John, OK, I emerged vlc and it sugges...

Re: 99 titles - which one to use?
Hi John, OK, first, this being Gentoo if anyone linked or didn't link something it falls on me as a user. Handbrake isn't even supported by Gentoo so I use an overlay to get access to the program, but being this is outside of normal channels who knows what's been setup? I'm just a normal user type b...

Re: 99 titles - which one to use?
Title 86 is a mess. It's long enough, but it appears the chapters are out of order! The credits are in the middle of the movie!
No idea what's wrong here. If this is a real bug in Handbrake then I'd like to learn how and where to report it. I hope it's not that dire though.
Thanks,
Mark
