Actually, that is not what happened.

Failed encode used:
Program on nearly full SSD
Originating file on 2TB drive
Destination file on 2TB drive

Successful encode used:
Program, originating file, and destination file all on newly-cleaned SSD.

Fixed.

I cleaned out my solid state drive, and put both the originating file and target file location there. All works fine now, though I didn't previously have to put everything in one drive.

My iMac has two hard drives:

250 GB Solid State drive, nearly full, on which Handbrake app resides in Applications and Handbrake CLI resides in Library/Application Support/
2 TB standard drive, where movie files reside

More info: 1. Compressing worked normally when original DVD rather than DVDMEDIA file used.
