Can Handbrake preserve/pass through HDR info in 4K video?

Description of problem or question: If I have a 4K MKV file encoded with HDR and I want to convert this to an MP4 file (M4V file) using Handbrake, can it preserve the HDR aspect of the encoding? If so, will it do so by default or do I have to add any special options? Steps to reproduce the problem ...

Saving a preset does not save the audio settings

I am running Handbrake 6509svn x86_64 (2014110901) on OS X 10.10.2. Since upgrading to this version of Handbrake I find that when I save a new preset it does not save the audio settings; specifically it always saves the bitrate as 256 Kbps even though I change it to e.g. 192 before saving the preset...

Handbrake Crashing (SIGSEGV) on initial scan

When doing initial scanning of an MKV file ripped from a Blu-ray disc Handbrake is crashing. Here is the first part of the OS X crash report: Process: HandBrake [25777] Path: /Applications/HandBrake.app/Contents/MacOS/HandBrake Identifier: fr.handbrake.HandBrake Version: 0.9.8 x86_64 (2012071800) Co...

Re: Nitty gritty of cropping?

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry if my example misled on the nature of my question. I'm fully conversant with PAL DVD encoding, 4:3 versus 16:9 etc. I just used that example to illustrate my specific question which is about when cropping is applied and how that affects the overall encoding flow. The ...

Nitty gritty of cropping?

Can someone explain when cropping is applied and how it relates to the final/output picture size as set in the Picture settings? Let me give a concrete example to illustrate my confusion. I have some source material that has storage dimensions of 720x576 and which is 14:9 (1.555:1) aspect ratio. Whe...

Converting M2TS files with mixed audio doesn't work properly

I have a (large) set of M2TS files that Handbrake will not convert properly. The issue seems to be that the primary audio track switches between regular 2 channel stereo and 5.1 encoding (and back agaion) a number of times within the file. Handbrake converts the file withiotu crashing but the output...

Re: M2TS RIP - Some Audio Missing

Another point of interest is that VLC 2.0.1 crashes (SIGBUS) when it tries to plat this .m2ts file. The crash happens at exactly the point where the audio changes. I'm pursuing that issue with the VLC folk.

@rollin_eng
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried with the latest Mac nightly build but it is exactly the same and the activity log also looks identical :(

M2TS RIP - Some Audio Missing

I often use HandBrake (macgui: Handbrake Version: 0.9.6 x86_64 (2012022800)) to RIP HD video recorded on my OPVR into a format suitable for Apple TV. This usually works just fine but there is a set of programs that I am recording at the moment where I am experiencing problems. Although to all intent...

Re: Best settings to avoid motion blur when downscaling?

Thanks for the reply, musicvid. I tried transcoding again using 'Detelecine Default' and 'Decomb Default' and this made some useful improvement but the results are still not as good as when viewing the disk on my Panasonic Blu-ray player / Sony TV combo. Maybe they never will be and I just have to a...

Re: Best settings to avoid motion blur when downscaling?

After more investigation I am beginning to wonder if this is more of a 'decode' problem rather than an 'encode' problem. Here is some more information in case it helps: 1. Viewing original Blu-ray disc on a Panasocic Blu-ray player through HDMI to a latest generation Sony Bravia TV. Motion blur is j...

Best settings to avoid motion blur when downscaling?

Re-posting with activity logs... I'm new to Handbrake and have a question regarding the best settings to use to solve a transcoding problem that I have. I have some high quality video from a Blu-ray disk - 28.6 Mbps, 1920x1080 at 29.970 fps, AVC (NTSC) (High@L4.1) (CABAC / 4 Ref Frames). This is a m...
