Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

Depending on how many hours you watch with the black bars, they can be "burned in" the screen, so yeah, we're stretching to fill the screen to preserve our tv screens.

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

I guess this all could be solved easily if a brand new TV (Vizio) had the same 'stretch' capabilities that my 6 year old tv does. I just don't get it.

I'm going to try not cropping as much from the top and bottom and see if that helps any - thanks for the formulas and all the help.

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

I viewed the same episode done 2 ways: my way, where I just unchecked 'keep aspect ratio', changed the width settings to 720x480, used 'none' on anamorphic setting, and making sure cropping was set to zero on all four sides. This one fills the screen without cutting off anything. Using the settings ...

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

Thanks so much for the actual print screen - I didn't realize how much of a "visual" person I was til today, that helps alot. I'm trying a "Married With Children" episode right now, which says it's 631x480, cropping 62 from top and and bottom. I figured that it was close enough, ...

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

Where do I find the info? Is it underneath that, the 'width' that has the boxes that can be adjusted if the Keep Aspect Ratio is unchecked?

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

See, now I'm not sure...I'm looking on the 'picture' tab in Handbrake. "Source" reads 720x480 - that is referring to the original, correct?

Re: Converting 4:3 full frame into 16:9

If the original aspect is 720x480, what would I need to crop from top and bottom to stretch and fill the screen? I tried the 120 - not a pretty picture!

Re: Can I switch "containers" after encoding?

@JackNF: thanks for the info on Avidemux! I have tons of mkv files that I'd like to quickly convert for playback on my Kindle Fire. This will save lots of time. One question: will the file sizes be the same?

Re: Long time Handbrake user, but I'm not a mathemetician -

I thought by cropping on the left and right, I would be cropping off the black bars (pillars), because I do that all the time for the bars on the top and bottom. I don't like too much of a "theater experience" in my living room, so I try to make the movie full screen. Regardless, I found t...

Re: Long time Handbrake user, but I'm not a mathemetician -

I should note that I just discovered a little box that was checked called "keep aspect ratio". Since I do NOT want to keep the 4:3 original aspect ratio, I'm guessing that, for starters, I should uncheck that - duh. I'm just having a hard time believing that the original aspect for this sh...

Long time Handbrake user, but I'm not a mathemetician - HELP

I converted all 10 season of Friends to mkv files and they display in 16:9 format perfectly played through my Micca Media Player onto my Samsung widescreen tv. However, played on my son's Vizio widescreen through his LG BD570 Blu-ray player, they have the dreaded pillars on the sides. No matter what...

Re: can a different pc have different file size results?

Unfortunately, I have no clue how to post the log, and I have done another movie since - not sure if I could still get it or not? Also, I forgot to say that the settings I mentioned are the ONLY thing I change - everything else is default, so if Handbrake has changed their default settings with new ...

can a different pc have different file size results?

I thought I was being really creative when I set up an old pc with Handbrake (the latest version) to help speed up the process of converting my DVD library. The pc in question is about 10 yrs old, has Windows XP, a little over 1 gb in memory and a 40 gb hdd. As I convert the videos, I just transfer ...

Re: Oscilating Audio

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this issue - thought I was just getting cranky in my old age! I'm having the same issue with all of my CSI dvd's. I'm through season 7 of CSI Las Vegas and season 3 of CSI Miami and I would start all over today if this would really fix the problem. I hate having...

Re: Missing "Target Size" option

Oh sorry, didn't realize. However, selecting target size on my CSI episodes as 900 mb, for example, actually creates near perfect video quality for me. You're saying, I should be checking the constant quality instead? That will give me the same results in a smaller file? What should I set it to, if ...

Re: Missing "Target Size" option

Found perfect settings for CSI episodes!

I am converting all of my CSI dvd's to mp4's for playback on my Argosy Media Player to my 720p Samsung tv. After repeated trial and error, I finally the the perfect settings and it's so easy: I use DVD Shrink to reauthor the individual episodes into the audio/video ts files, unchecking unnecessary l...

Re: DVD series with "Play All" and Handbrake question

Just had to put my two cents in here: I'm currently ripping several TV series that I have to mp4 files. I have an Argosy Media Player and a 2TB hd that I've set up as my "dvd library". On my hd, I have set up several folders for different genres of movies and tv series. I rip all of my TV ...

Re: Set A Maximum File Size

I'm currently using Handbrake as the 2nd step in converting my DVD's to mp4's for playback on my Argosy Media Player. I always set my final file size to ensure video quality and most of the time, the larger the better (like you said, generally a 2 hr movie is about 2gb). On the video tab, there is a...
