Re: High core counts and video quality

While X264 and X265 might not make use more than 8/12-ish cores, more cores are certainly useful for NLMeans denoising.

Re: HandbrakeCLI Encode failed (error 3)

I nearly always take MKVs produced from MakeMKV as my source for Handbrake, so I might be way off here, but is your source encrypted/copy protected?

Lots of log entries about Encrypted DVD support not available and CSS authentication not available.

Re: Encoded video terrible color and sharpness

It's not a problem I experience, but the description of it is so similar to the two Issues on git hub I figures it must be related. The fix says "filters (decomb, denoise, detelecine, lapsharp, nlmeans, unsharp) were all setting color_range to the source color_range after it had already been convert...

Your source is not 10,000kb/s.

From your encode log.
Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 (Main) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 1280x720, 1278 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25k tbn, 50 tbc (default)

Re: 4K and 1080P encodes near same size with nearly same settings

It seems both encodes were done at a CRF of 22. From your logs. 4K encode... x265 [info]: Rate Control / qCompress : CRF-22.0 / 0.60 1080 encode... x265 [info]: Rate Control / qCompress : CRF-22.0 / 0.60 Which is why it's weird that they are so close to the same size. If one of the devs doesn't reply here, you might try suggesting the feature on github.

Re: How do we rip without transcoding?

Handbrake isn't a ripper. It can't do anyting with an encrypted, DRM, copy protected source. From "About Handbrake" in the documentation... "Applications such as AnyDVD HD for Windows and MakeMKV for Linux, Mac, and Windows can create copies of DVD and Blu-ray discs that HandBrake can open" You're w...

X265 2.8 seems much slower

Description of problem or question: X265 2.8 seems much slower than 2.6. I'm currently encoding Supernatural Season 1 from my Blu-Ray rips and swapped to the nightly with X265 2.8 and my encode speed has dropped from 5 - 6fps to 1 - 2 fps. Running with NLmeans ultralight to take the edge off the wo...

It works for me, nightly Handbrake builds and Linux Mint.

Just select a folder/directory and hit open. All titles within the folder are then scanned.

Re: Too high ETA for a DVD source on HEVC Matroska encode

RF=12 is telling X265 to preserve quality that I doubt even exists in a DVD source.

The more quality you preserve, the slower the encode. Set it back to 20 and encode one chapter. Then compare the two by playing them, not by looking at free frames.

Re: CPU advice needed for x265 encoding

Tough question. The i3-7100 has hyperthreading (2 cores, 4 threads), the i5-7400 doesn't (4 cores, 4 threads). A hyper-thread core isn't quite as useful as a 'real' core. However the extra clock speed of the i3 might negate this. i5 has more cache, but runs at 3.0GHz flat, turbo upto 3.5GHz. The i3 ...

Eg. Anything you set up and save as an existing or new user-preset doesn't work when the program is restarted.

Re: Encoding from Blu Ray with E-AC3 Audio Track fails

If the nightly builds don't help, as a workaround you could rip with MakeMKV, encode without the audio track, then use mkv merge to put the audio track you want back in.
