[Implemented] Confirmation window for Suspend and Shutdown
When encoding a film overnight I use the suspend (or sometimes shutdown) option, which are great; however, I keep getting caught out by this during the day when I encode short clips (or even when a film finishes encoding during the day). Suddenly my screen goes off and I think the laptop must have o...

SVN 5400 slows down hugely over time, using only 15-20% proc
Encoding with HB 0.9.8 I consistently get 6-7 fps encoding 1080p on the high profile setting, on 1.6GHz quad-core i7 processor. CPU temp sits at 85-93 degrees Celsius without problems. However, using SVN 5400 the encode starts off as fast but over time it always drops to 1-2 fps and even down to 0.3...

I use MPEG Streamclip for those videos. Would be nice if HB would support rotation one day.

Re: MKV DTS track not correctly passed through in svn5400 !
Here is a 10 second sample file with log. In VLC both audio tracks appear as "Stereo" (when the second would normally read "Surround") but the second is silent:

MKV DTS track not correctly passed through in svn5400 !
Update : It has nothing to do with the subtitles; I tried again without any subs and it basically seems that Auto-passthru for DTS is broken! :( And it also happens if "DTS passthru" is selected, and also if it is the only audio track. I've just checked two other films I encoded with svn53...

Re: AC3 Passthru vs Auto Passthru bit rate question
You really need to modify this Auto-passthru feature. It seems pointless that the default setting is for it to re-encode AC3 (eg 448kbps) to a higher bitrate of AC3 (640kbps), without even warning the user. I have been using this option, assuming it simply passed through the AC3, which is a logical ...

Crop to Aspect Ratio (e.g. to 1.5 for iPhone screen)
When I watch a movie or TV programme/episode on my iPhone I like it to fill the screen, because the screen is small, and on iPhones before the iPhone 4 the image is not sharp when held any nearer than at full arm length. I can of course zoom in to the video on the iPhone to fill the screen. The prob...

Re: iPhone 4
As regards audio, for compatibility with iPhone 3GS and AppleTV I have been ensuring that the first track is 160 kbps AAC. Is this actually a hard limit - ie would a video with 192 kbps audio play fine on both? Or either? (I don't have an AppleTV (yet) but would like my files to remain compatible fo...

Re: iPhone can now use Apple TV Preset
From this discussion it seems the iPhone 3GS supports 64-bit files, but do 64-bit files greater than 4GB in file size work with the iPhone? Is it just as easy to move these across, e.g. with DiskAid? I suppose either way it wouldn't hurt to leave it on since if the file goes over 4GB it's wrecked an...

Re: What no Xvid - Is Handbrake only for the wealthy
I found that having a virus on my laptop limited the video playback capabilities. Everything was running slower than expected, but sometimes even simple videos wouldn't play. I can play back x264 at 1280x720 with a four year old Dell laptop, 1.7GHz mobile Pentium M with 1GB RAM. Sometimes high bitra...

Minimising Hard Drive Wear and Tear
Having left my laptop encoding with HandBrake for an estimated 500-800 hours total, the internal hard drive wore out. Thankfully I was backing up regularly and did not lose much. It also gave me warning by making noises for a few weeks before. I expect that encoding will wear out equipment, particul...

May I suggest that the "Apple TV" preset be renamed "Apple TV, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G" Can I ask, is the presets page currently up to date? http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/BuiltInPresets It still seems to have a lot of old presets on it. Is the Apple TV preset here up to date...

Re: convert just audio, leave the video.
I hope you have checked that the video will play fine on your target device, otherwise you may have to reecnode the video too (in which case HandBrake is very good at this!). If playing on a PC it would be much easier to just get a codec or player that supports the audio codec. If it is a very stran...

Does that mean the windows version will run much slower on Windows 7 or Vista than on the latest Mac OS?s55 wrote: Nope
Also, is the documentation likely to be updated in time for the release - e.g. how to use soft subtitles, changes to the CRF scale, and the command line equivalents for the presets, etc?

iPhone 3G S Compatibility versus previous iPhone 3G
The new iPhone 3G S is much faster at loading applications. I am wondering whether the video playback compatibility has improved? There doesn't apear to be a difference in compatibility on the Apple website: Video playback Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 f...

PP7 filter: When and how to use
The PP7 filter, even in the default mode, can have a dramatic effect on the output video (detrimental when it's too high), and can greatly reduce the file size in CRF constant quality mode (e.g to 70% of original for the default setting in one test). From my intitial experimentation, low values, lik...

How can I remove an audio track from MKV?
I have ended up with an MKV file which has a Russian track as the first track and the English track as the second track. I would like to strip out the Russian track to make the file smaller and make the second, English, track the default track. I don't expect HB to do this but could anyone recommend...

Re: 0.9.2 Pixelation Problems w/iPod Preset
As we learned the hard way, iPods with firmware 1.2.1+ could always do 2500kbps, it's just that Apple didn't advertise it that way and thus we didn't test that way. The appropriate string is vbv-maxrate=2500:vbv-bufsize=2000 (the 5G has a fixed buffer size of 2kbit). Rodney hehe, i said 2000 kbps s...

Re: iTunes, encodes for aTV and iPod - how do you organize?
If you want an iPod-conpatible encode purely for on-screen iPod viewing (not using video-out) I definitely think the way to go is doing a separate encode specifically for the iPod screen's resolution/width/height. They are so fast in comparison to a high quality encode that you might as well, and it...

Picture size has nothing to do with vbv. So please do not confuse the issue. vbv is all about bitrate for a given buffer duration. x264 doesnt care if its from an HD source or a 320 x 240 source. What I was saying (which I think should have been obvious) is that the vbv limits will be much more of ...

Fixed my stutter issue completely. Possible new AppleTV Preset? I think between the two of us, we've proved it out. Plus it will allow the users smaller (most of the time) and better quality with CRF. I know this will disappoint you a bit Cav, but I think most users would rather have no-dct-decimat...
